Was fun to stomp the pieces together- they lock in place so you don’t really need to use the screws. I retrofit the hinges like @pragmatic and @OCD- it was super easy with only 4 pilot holes needing drilled, 4 little tabs cut off with a small hand saw, and a Philips screwdriver. Now I can store my hot tub chemicals via the hinging top step and compartment underneath. I’ll probably seal the holes left where I sawed off the top step locking tabs with some black caulk. I am pleased with the end result, but this product was very difficult to put together. Specifically, the lower step has to fit into a slot and then be pushed down onto locking tabs. No matter how hard we tried (including the use of a rubber mallet), we could not get the step far enough into the slot to allow it to properly seat on the locking tabs. I had to make a modification to the tabs to get the step to finally seat correctly. I'm 100% positive I was following the instructions correctly, so I'm not sure why this was so difficult. Had my handyman put it together and man he had to pound it so hard I would never had been able to do it myself. Too difficult. It works ok i wiah I could open and close it for storage though.

It may be an American company but it lacks the quality. Very strong design which is why I bought it. Lines up and easy to build but I've watched the heat of the sun expand the joints enough to separate them. Screws seem a joke as there's not much to screw into. Looks great at the hot tub. Replacing one that was 12 years old and was afraid the sun had weakened it. So before catastrophe I replaced it. Not sure if it will last 12 years but it won't matter by then. ... show more
