Great product as most of the Marineland products are! Great longevity and keeps the tank super clean. Added bonus is how quiet it is. Super easy to put together and install. Can install this on your aquarium in less than 10 minutes. Read the instructions carefully on how you are supposed to fill the back two reservoirs where the carbon filters are installed BEFORE turning this filter on to prevent damage to the motor. I always fill the two reservoirs in the back of the filter until you see water running out the front where the bio wheels are located. That is a good way to know when the reservoirs are full enough and then you can plug the filter in. Be aware the filter will make a little bit of noise for the first 5-6 seconds as the suction begins to get itself worked up. It will then turn very quiet while the device is running. Keeps my 60 gallon tank super filtered and clean. Would highly recommend buying this filter!

Purchased two of these for a ninety gallon tank. So far this product has been impressive. It has only been three weeks. I have to say the size, installation, weight, and ease of use have all been above and beyond my expectations. Placed some of my previous filters medium in with the new filter medium at set up. Weekly testing have consistent healthy biological levels. I found myself questioning why I had a P-I-T-A canister filter for twenty- two years. The only answer I could come up with is that technology has finally met consumer needs. The price point was very good. Now if it lasts? Only time will tell. Read alot of reviews and alot of social media postings and I am optimistic. Will update if any issues arise.

So I had some trouble when I first installed my filter, and I figured I would share the steps I went through to fix it in case it helps anyone else. I put everything together just like the diagram but when I plugged it in, all it made was this really loud grinding sound and there was no water flow. I opened the lid and I could see some bubbles but nothing obviously wrong. I pulled stuff apart and checked the propeller and couldn’t see anything wrong there either. I had set up everything in order according to the directions and was baffled. I began trouble-shooting. When I called the help hotline (it was outside business hours so I couldn’t get a person), something they suggested is taking the propeller out and with the filter plugged in, hold it up against the outside of the filter. If you can feel the magnetic tug, then at least the motor is working. So I pulled mine out and tried this. Propeller and motor were good. Another review mentioned trouble with the flow lever on the intake tube, so I fiddled with this. No change. But it did give me an idea since I had seen bubbles, I figured it could be a different problem with the intake tube. Long story short, the three sections of the tube weren’t connected as tightly as they could have been. Tightened, water started flowing through the filter. There was still a bit of noise, but I noticed that my tank was filled below the top connection point on the tube. I added more water to the tank until it was above the line, and presto, no grinding noise! So if you do have problems with flow or noise you might check your intake tube and make sure it is tightly together (REALLY tight) and maybe fill the tank above the top connection. The filter itself seems to be working great. The water flowing back into the tank can be a bit loud, but it isn’t nearly as bad as some filters I’ve used previously. I really like how sturdy it is built and that I can insert two filters back to back for more filtration if I like. Also, the cover is super easy to take on and off. The bio wheel sounds neat in theory but it isn’t even spinning in mine. Not sure how to fix that or if it really matters. Maybe I’ll fiddle with it later. The fish tank is in the bottom of my Chinese water dragon vivarium, so as you can imagine it can get a bit messy, but the water has stayed clear and clean, so I’m please enough. Update: So it has been running for about a month with no problems. I got the biowheel to run for a bit, opening the flow more on the intake tube and pushing the wheel back all the way in its housing. The water has stayed pristine even with my lizard so I’m really happy with it!

This a good hang on back (HOB) filter for up to 20 gallons aquarium. For a good filtration, you need a filter with a water suction speed (gallons per hour - GPH) of 10X the tank volume (eg, if you have a 10 gal tank, pick a filter with 100 GPH) plus a good cartridge for mechanical filtration. I'm running this filter in a 10 gal tank, so the water flow is really good. The water return (through a waterfall system) is noisy, but you can make it quiet adding water above the level, thus decreasing the water splash sound (but keep in mind that water surface should have a movement to allow good oxygenation). An additional alternative is by covering the intake with a sponge (you can find very cheap sponges for intakes here on Amazon). Also with a sponge on filter intake, you will protect your fishes and invertebrates to be sucked in and it will also work as the first mechanical filtration as well (grabbing uneaten food). For a 10 gal tank (which is not height enough for large intakes), I had to remove the extension that comes with... If you have big tanks (like 40 gal and up), I suggest to run a second filter with the HOB: use internal or undergravel filters together with a HOB one. The combination of big water flow with a good cartridge is the secret to keeping the water crystal clear. Important: Circulating water is the secret for filtering the whole tank. If you promote the circulation of water in your tank (with internal filter or creating bubbles or with small circulation pumps), you will have the best environment for your fishes. About the cartridge, it is not special as advertised by the manufacturer (just a plastic frame covered by microfiber and small pieces of carbon inside), so I suggest to add a Purigen (Seachem) together with the regular one (add in the space between filter and water return - see photo enclosed). Briefly, it's a very good filter for its price value and for the price of cartridges as well (~ $6 for 6 cartridges). I didn't notice any advantage in the bio wheel because my tank is already cycled, with zero of ammonia and nitrite (maybe bio wheel helps a little bit considering that bacteria can grow on the wheel buckets as stated by the manufacturer). Also, it is very easy to disassemble and re-assemble, making it easier to clean up (as suggested, clean impeller and intake tube every month when I do 50% water change). Updated: My filter stopped to work after 1 year. First, it had some problems starting up. I decided to order a new one because the price is affordable and the filter system is good as well.

The EMPEROR SERIES are great filters! I've use the 280 & 400 before back in the 90's. They were great then, they're great now. There have have been some minor changes: No more control flow & window to see wheels turning. The rattling noise that everyone complains about is easy to fix. While the filter is running/on, lift the intake tube up and off the filter (ensure that the spray bars stay in place by holding/pushing them down in place while you lift up the intake tube. Allow the filter to empty water out of filter. You will hear bubbling and gurgling noises. Do not worry. Once the filter empties out and spray bars run out of water, carefully reinsert intake tube down into chamber, wait for filter to refill itself with water. Once filled,the filter should be back in normal operation and the noise gone (unless the shaft and or related parts to it are damaged). By doing this, it is like purging nd priming the filter. I think the filter gets foreign particles from time to time which caused the noise. Mine (I have 2 280's & 2 400's on my overstockecked planted freshwater 84 gallon long tank. Only One seems to have been unlucky to get small/micro snails inside of it). I also avoid using soil and sand in my tank which could get in filter impeller assembly when the substrate or sand is disturbed, especially if ur intake tube reaches close to the bottom. I decided to write this review for the sole purpose of informing others who have been frustrated or have read the negative reviews about the emperor power filters that the noise issues are easy to remedy. I never completely clean my emperors out which could increase more disturbance on the mechanical parts (impeller assembly and intake tube). If the impeller gets stuck, follow the same procedure as mentioned above. Use long pliers to realign impeller in assembly while intake tube is out. Once impeller is spinning again, reindeer intake tube. I just took care of a little rattling noise from one of my 400 emperor by performing the above mentioned procedure 30 minutes ago. It took me 2 minutes. I'm lazy when it comes to writing a review about anything on any forum. In fact this is probably my first review ever on anything because I can't remember any other review I've written before for the moment, but I feel like I wrote one before about something else totally not related to this subject (a very short one, probably under 20 words). This review I'm writing now about emperor filters is very important to me. I'm passionate about them. They beat canister and any other job filter. No hoses, no crawling under tank cabinet, no clogged hoses. Very user friendly. To clean spray bars, I don't dismantle it and use brush. I simply use a wire, bend it to a small 90 degree and insert it through each hole on the spray bars until the water flows freely. The most work required maintaining this filter is rinsing off the homemade screen pads (10 minutes tops, I have 4 emperors) which I have made out of green scrubbing pads cut out to the shape of the stock filter pad/tray with the stock blue floss and carbon removed. I used a box cutter blade to shave/cut the blue floss/pads off the black tray. I re use the black tray to work with my home made green scrubbing pads. I hold the two together as I slide them down into filter slots, no rubber band necessary as the green pads are sturdy and hold their shape going down into slots. My all 4 emperor filters are so quiet, the water trickling is louder than the motor. My water level reaches up to the lips of the output chutes....now that is quite. The higher water level moves/circulates water better,quieter as the surface of water travels from filter all the way to front of tank because the water doesn't drop from filter chute, but slides across onto surface of water to front of tank with less splashing. Higher water level of water also gives me more water in my tank. I am not a sales rep or anything if the sort. In just passionate about my hobbies and like to share what works. If a can convince one person to use the emperor power filters as I do...this review was worth writing. Less hassle and maintenance, more bio/chemical/particles filtration, more water movement..like a filter and water circulation pump in one also. I highly recommend the emperor filters. Once u know how to remedy the noise, it takes two minutes. Do not be frustrated. Just learn and figure out what makes noise and how it goes away. If I have to post a video on "how to", I will. I will find time out of my busy schedule. These filters are awesome!!!!

Not worth the cost. Poor reliability, rising replacement costs, and an increasing total cost of ownership make Marineland’s current filter systems a poor value for my tanks. Summary Product Quality Problems The product quality problems I have experienced have been extremely annoying and costly, ranging from replacement impellers to full filter-system replacements. Given the last eight impellers I have purchased as part of a system or as a replacement, seven of them have broken. Usually, it's just the rubber boot on the end that falls off and sometimes it falls off deep inside the well in the filter system where the impeller resides. In that case I was unable to remove it and had to replace the entire system because of it. This rubber boot covers a small plastic end cap that is press fitted on the ends of the metal shaft that the impeller spins on. In all cases one or both ends have come off the shaft. Once this happens, the rubber boot is usually lost because it's so tiny and it either falls into the filter, washes down the drain during cleaning, or falls into the tank. Once the boot is lost the impeller wobbles while it spins and makes a lot of noise, so much that the impeller must be replaced. If the press fit plastic falls off and is lost, the impeller is no longer useful and the assembly falls apart. On one filter, when I tried to remove the impeller, only its shaft came out, and the metallic barrel becomes stuck in the impeller well. The impeller has usually been approx. ~50% of the cost of an entire system for some reason. The company setting these prices really takes advantage of its customer base who is loyal if they are buying a replacement. This is less than fully supportive to their users and not appreciated. I recommend NOT using generic impellers as 100% of the generic ones I have purchased have broken and in several modes. The second problem is more of a nuisance than a problem - I can live with it, but I really hate it. The intake tube, extension, end basket, and coupler often separate into pieces when someone is removing it for cleaning. On a 100Gal tank you will find yourself fully arm deep fishing out the parts from the tank prior to cleaning. When this happens, much of the debris from the plastic falls off and into the tank only to get stuck on the filter again post cleaning. The purpose of the filter is to remove the junk, not accidentally re-release it back into the tank when you clean the filter. This just infinitely propagates the need for a filter. Cost Increases and Total Cost of Ownership Cost is the second major reason I no longer consider these products worthwhile. When I first invested in Marineland products, I purchased the Power Filter 350 in 2023 for $36.89. It has since been discontinued and replaced by the Power Filter 375 for $64.87 in 2026. From what I can tell, the products are largely the same, with changes mainly to color, plastic molding, and the top cover. For the 350 Filter, replacement impellers increased from $20.71 in 2023 to $23.92 in 2026. However, the new Power Filter 375 does not yet appear to have a replacement impeller available, meaning the practical replacement cost may be a new $64.87 filter system. The replaceable Size C filter, used by the Power Filter 350 and Power Filter 200, has also increased in cost from $6.20 in 2018 to $19.99 in 2026. Price Summary: 2023 — Filter System: $36.89; Filters: $6.20; Replacement Impeller: $20.71. 2026 Price Summary: 2026 -- Filter System: $64.87; Filters: $19.99; Replacement Impeller: $64.87 system replacement if no standalone impeller is available. Environmental Impact Because of the rolling product design change, I can no longer use spare parts saved from broken 350 filters, including covers, intake tube parts, bio-wheel bushings, and water guides. These parts no longer fit or match the replacement model. They also do not have a plastic type stamped on them, so my municipal recycling company will not accept them for recycling, meaning they must be discarded into a landfill. Conclusion I’m shopping for an entirely new type of filter system for all my tanks. For me, it is time to switch filter solutions because Marineland’s pricing has become too high while product quality has not improved enough to reduce my cost of poor quality. As a loyal Marineland customer since Feb 2018 who exclusively used Marineland filter systems in multiple large tanks, I’m deeply disappointed this manufacturer and Amazon vendor has chosen to increase their price points so aggressively without increasing their product quality or reducing my COPQ (Cost of Poor Quality). I can no longer reward this company my business based on principal and practical necessity surrounding todays’ economic pressures. Additionally, I look forward to the easier cleaning processes some alternate filtration systems offer.

To say it is extremely quiet does not describe how quiet it actually is. This filter has absolutely no noise at all when it is running. It probably has to do with the fact that the motor is not mounted to where it is on the outside of the filter. The motor is designed to be in the water on the inside of the aquarium, therefore the water dampens any noise that is produced. When I turned it on for the first time the only way I knew it was running was the splashing sound of the water.

These are great filters for a fantastic price (using Amazon Prime). I have several different brands of filters on my four tanks, and the Penguins rock! I'm just going to add my two cents along with the other five- and four-star reviewers. Don't pay attention to the people who give these filters bad ratings. Their issues are coming from ignorant use of the filters. These filters do not self-prime. You must fill the filter reservoir(s) up all the way before attempting to start the filter. If you do not, you will burn the filter out. This is why the one-star people keep killing multiple filters the first day they have them. And as for sound, these filters are incredibly quiet. I have a Penguin 200 running alongside an AC50 in my 29g (yes, I like to over-filter haha) and the Penguin is quieter than the more expensive/trendy AquaClear. The Penguin moves the water very well. If you raise your water level to just over the outflow lip, you will get great surface ripples that extend out to the front of the tank. Greater ripples=greater surface agitation=greater oxygenation of the water. Having the water angle out more laterally also helps get the tank's water to turn over better. My AC dumps the water downwards, which is great in that one spot but does not create a strong barrel current in the tank like the Penguin does. The Penguin 200 has two cartridge slots. I use the first slot for mechanical filtration (I wrap quilting batting around an old plastic cartridge), and Marineland also offers empty cartridge baskets online that you can fill with Biomax, carbon, etc. It also features the Biowheel, which grows beneficial bacteria on it, further increasing your bio filtration. The 350 model is the same; it just has four cartridge slots and two bio wheels. When first running, the wheel spins fairly fast and can create a trickle sound. This bothered me the first couple of days, but soon became therapeutic...just like any of those noise machines people use to simulate the sound of streams, rain, etc. to help them sleep. That being said, after a month or two has passed and the Biowheel begins to slow down a bit from the weight of the stuff growing on it, the trickle noise will disappear completely a the wheel will not be moving fast enough to fling the water with such force. Breakdown and maintenance is easy. Just be sure to thoroughly clean out the filter once every month or two. As long as you're not over-feeding or stay on top of your tank cleaning, the filter should not have any issues remaining fairly clean. To all new hobbyists: DO NOT rinse your filter cartridges/pads nor the Biowheel with tap water. The chlorine in your city water will kill your beneficial bacteria and your cycle will crash. The intake tube has a wonderful adjustable vent towards the top of the tube. This allows the filter to pull in water from both the top and bottom of the tank. You can close it if you want more pull from the bottom, but I like to keep mine open all the way as it helps draw in water that is normally in a dead spot directly below the filter. I love the Penguins and just ordered another 350 to go alongside the Aqua-Tech 30-60 filter in my new 55g. A side note: both the Aqua-Tech 30-60 and Penguin 200/350 share the same types of cartridges. The Aqua-Tech 30-60 actually looks the exact same as the Penguins...just without the Biowheel :)
