  • The best canister filters!
Size: 307
Before this filter I ran a 404 from 2011 until 2019, so I was pretty confident buying another Fluval. The 7th gen is fundamentally the same but with a lot of quality of life upgrades since the 4th gen. It is super quiet and low power at only 16 watts. The black/red aesthetic is sleek and black hoses/nozzles blend in easily with a dark background. The new priming mechanism and the media tray handle are the best upgrades by far. In terms of raw filtration, it does a great job at keeping my water crystal clear. Overall it's a great filter that's easy to setup, use, and maintain. Now the only negative thing I have to say about the *07 filters (due to fact I am coming directly from the old *04) is that this generation feels somewhat 'cheap'? The main canister housing itself feels like a thinner or lighter plastic. And more noticeably the media baskets and basket lid feel flimsy. My lid was warped when I opened it up and didn't sit flush on the top basket. But for all I know this could be a lighter, more durable plastic than 10 years ago? Either way, if it can last 8+ years like my 404 then I am happy. 3 months and no problems so far. ... show more

  • AMAZING!!!
Size: 407
This replaced a pet store over the back filter for my 58 gallon tank. My water quality here is terrible, the tank was a mess, this was my last hope. I read the reviews about it being noisy so was prepared for the worst. THIS IS AN AMAZING FISH TANK FILTER AND WELL WORTH THE MONEY! CLEANED THE WATER WITHIN 24 HOURS AND IT'S QUIET! The set up took about 45 minutes, it was not difficult but this is a more complicated and infinitely better filter than the back of the tank jobbies from the pet store. Just read the directions carefully and you'll be okay. I am still waiting for the in-line UV cleaner for bacteria that keeps making the water cloudy (tried ALL the petstore products.....no luck, we have well water) but the water has never looked better. This is a great product! ... show more

  • Nice improvements in the new 07 fluval series
Size: 407
I maintain aquariums for a living. I have been using Fluval canister filters for more then 20 years now, ever since they were on the 03 series. I probably have about 25 running right now of various generations and sizes. They have had some issues in each of the previous generations, but over all they keep improving and are easy to setup, maintain, and diagnose. Just set this one up to replace a model (404) that was 10 years old and my client was complaining of the noise it was making. Instead of replacing the impeller, shaft, and impeller cover which would have probably helped, we decided to upgrade because of the age of the filter and improvements of a model that is three generations newer. There is a lot of marketing fluff on the Fluval page on what the new features are with this generation. But below are the noticeable improvements for someone thinking about upgrading. -They have made the canister itself more robust by reinforcing the bottom corners, they have improved the aquastop valve opening mechanism (but it otherwise seems unchanged). -The impeller cover seems the same from the 06 series (which has been the best improvement over the old 04/05 series that were always breaking a tab). The new pull out for the media baskets is nice as they all come out and go back in at once. -The filter is noticeably quieter than previous models, its extremely quiet, but not dead silent. I was hoping they would convert over to DC operation on this new generation as that's the route most aquarium return pumps seem to be going. Overall I think this is a good upgrade from the 05 and below series, but if you have an 06 series, you're really not getting too much out of the new model. If you are setting up a new tank and don't have any filter, it is an excellent choice. As mentioned before these filters have some history behind them, and with each improving generation they have became more powerful, reliable, easier to maintain, and quieter. If I am using a canister filter on a new aquarium setup for a client these or the fluval FX series are my go to filter. If I start to see any issues with this new 07 series I will update my review in the future. ... show more

  • I much prefer a pump outside the tank
Size: 207
This is my second one and I oversized my thirty-gallon tank for this model. Very quiet and an energy saver. There is 2 hoses that come up the back, but that outweighs the troubles from inside the tank that occur, like water spilling into the tank and the small filters that you are forced to use. this system makes it easy to remove the bottom container without having to readjust the hoses are it is set up. There are 4 filtering methods in this system and if you don't put fish in the tank, technically it should last many years without filter changeouts, but I don't know that for sure. I like it for the ambiance. ... show more
