As water flows over the wheel, these beneficial bacteria break down these harmful chemicals, providing a safe environment for your fish.

Yes, the Penguin filter comes with a mid-level intake and adjustable flow, allowing you to control the speed of water that flows in your aquarium. It allows for custom water circulation based on the needs of your tank's inhabitants.

No, the Bio-Wheel generally does not need replacement unless it is damaged. It is designed to survive the life span of your aquarium, growing more effective as they mature. Replacing the Bio-Wheel can disturb the beneficial bacteria colony that helps with biological filtration.

  • Superb filter system for all tanks
Size: Up to 60 gallons
I used to work as a marine biologist for a major state aquarium. Marineland bio pumps have been around forever. I have been using them for both salt and freshwater tanks in gallon sizes ranging from 10-200. All have worked flawlessly and I will continue to use them as both primary and secondary systems. They are far superior to anything except canister systems BUT in some ways, better than canister filters due to ease of maintenance. I will pick 3-4 of these at one time over a single system any day. Simply, one goes down (breaks), another is still keeping your tank clean and filtered. Please read!!! your fish and you will be much happier and stun everyone else... Advantages: 1) You don't have to shut it down. Pull the cartridge, rinse the new one with distilled water, slowly replace it back in the formed slots. No shutting down valves, seals/o-ring probs etc.. 2) They're pretty quiet but can get the "bubbling noise" when your water level drops below a certain point.Typically just below the flat part of the outlets. It won't hurt it or the fish if it does, it just gets that "noisy" waterfall sound which some, people feel it's soothing. Keeping the water level up is a good thing and remember, those bio wheels add oxygen to the water. Canisters don't. 3) They are easy to fix unless the actual motor goes bad. A wheel sticks? clean the roller pins and slots. 5 minutes. Impeller stops? try pulling and just clean the surfaces of the magnet and cavity; again a 5 minute job. You do have to unplug it for those two jobs. TIPS- A) Do yourself a huge favor and buy an extra set or two of cartridges. They are easily found from mom-n-pop pet stores to large chain stores. You CAN rinse the old ones in an emergency. B) Go to the grocery store and get a gl jug of distilled water and keep it. Reason? tap and even well water has trace elements and minerals that will kill the beneficial bacteria and cause a cloudy white appearance (bacterial bloom) for a cpl days. C) Motor/impeller maintenance - Unplug the pump. Lift the cover off, grab the intake tube (square) and slightly wiggle while pulling upward. Clean with a paper towel and white vinegar on the rubber "grommets" and silver pins you see.Basically, make sure everything that is suppose to spin, does so smoothly. D) Bio wheel sticking - Just lift the cover off. No need to unplug. Lift the sticking wheel outuse a Q-tip to clean the slots where the wheel rests. Lightly clean the silver roller pins on the ends. Replace. DO NOT CLEAN OR WASH the paper wheel itself. Sounds like work?? it's not... A canister or in tank filter is ten times more work and messy. These are awesome filters.. Get it and take heed to what I wrote. You'll be happy with it.... ... show more

Size: Up to 80 gallons
The EMPEROR SERIES are great filters! I've use the 280 & 400 before back in the 90's. They were great then, they're great now. There have have been some minor changes: No more control flow & window to see wheels turning. The rattling noise that everyone complains about is easy to fix. While the filter is running/on, lift the intake tube up and off the filter (ensure that the spray bars stay in place by holding/pushing them down in place while you lift up the intake tube. Allow the filter to empty water out of filter. You will hear bubbling and gurgling noises. Do not worry. Once the filter empties out and spray bars run out of water, carefully reinsert intake tube down into chamber, wait for filter to refill itself with water. Once filled, the filter should be back in normal operation and the noise gone (unless the shaft and or related parts to it are damaged). By doing this, it is like purging nd priming the filter. I think the filter gets foreign particles from time to time which caused the noise. Mine (I have 2 280's & 2 400's on my overstockecked planted freshwater 84 gallon long tank. Only One seems to have been unlucky to get small/micro snails inside of it). I also avoid using soil and sand in my tank which could get in filter impeller assembly when the substrate or sand is disturbed, especially if ur intake tube reaches close to the bottom. I decided to write this review for the sole purpose of informing others who have been frustrated or have read the negative reviews about the emperor power filters that the noise issues are easy to remedy. I never completely clean my emperors out which could increase more disturbance on the mechanical parts (impeller assembly and intake tube). If the impeller gets stuck, follow the same procedure as mentioned above. Use long pliers to realign impeller in assembly while intake tube is out. Once impeller is spinning again, reindeer intake tube. I just took care of a little rattling noise from one of my 400 emperor by performing the above mentioned procedure 30 minutes ago. It took me 2 minutes. I'm lazy when it comes to writing a review about anything on any forum. In fact this is probably my first review ever on anything because I can't remember any other review I've written before for the moment, but I feel like I wrote one before about something else totally not related to this subject (a very short one, probably under 20 words). This review I'm writing now about emperor filters is very important to me. I'm passionate about them. They beat canister and any other job filter. No hoses, no crawling under tank cabinet, no clogged hoses. Very user friendly. To clean spray bars, I don't dismantle it and use brush. I simply use a wire, bend it to a small 90 degree and insert it through each hole on the spray bars until the water flows freely. The most work required maintaining this filter is rinsing off the homemade screen pads (10 minutes tops, I have 4 emperors) which I have made out of green scrubbing pads cut out to the shape of the stock filter pad/tray with the stock blue floss and carbon removed. I used a box cutter blade to shave/cut the blue floss/pads off the black tray. I re use the black tray to work with my home made green scrubbing pads. I hold the two together as I slide them down into filter slots, no rubber band necessary as the green pads are sturdy and hold their shape going down into slots. My all 4 emperor filters are so quiet, the water trickling is louder than the motor. My water level reaches up to the lips of the output chutes....now that is quite. The higher water level moves/circulates water better, quieter as the surface of water travels from filter all the way to front of tank because the water doesn't drop from filter chute, but slides across onto surface of water to front of tank with less splashing. Higher water level of water also gives me more water in my tank. I am not a sales rep or anything if the sort. In just passionate about my hobbies and like to share what works. If a can convince one person to use the emperor power filters as I do...this review was worth writing. Less hassle and maintenance, more bio/chemical/particles filtration, more water movement..like a filter and water circulation pump in one also. I highly recommend the emperor filters. Once u know how to remedy the noise, it takes two minutes. Do not be frustrated. Just learn and figure out what makes noise and how it goes away. If I have to post a video on "how to", I will. I will find time out of my busy schedule. These filters are awesome!!!! ... show more

  • Good filters
Size: Up to 40 gallons
I love Marineland filters, great filters at a reasonable price. Mine have lasted as long as 10 to 15 years. They aren’t the highest quality out there but worth every penny. Lots of room in the enclosure for additional filter media, which I like to do. They are not self-priming, you have to fill them with water before turning them on. I don’t mind, it’s not a concern of mine. Construction is fine, strong plastic not a cheap feel. There are two slots for filter cartridges if you need extra room. Off-brand filter pads are available at a reduced price, they’re as good as the genuine Marineland cartridges. I recycle mine though, cutting the fiber out of a spent cartridge and replace it with a pad made from bulk filter material that I cut to fit. All in all a reliable workhorse filter at a reasonable price. Recommended. ... show more

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Reliable filtration, but not completely silent
Size: Up to 40 gallons
The Marineland Penguin Bio-Wheel Power Filter has been a solid performer for keeping my aquarium water clean and clear. The multi-stage filtration does a good job removing debris, and the Bio-Wheel feature is great for beneficial bacteria, which really helps with long-term tank health. Setup was straightforward, and once it’s running properly, water clarity improves quickly. The flow rate feels strong enough for medium tanks without being too aggressive for the fish. That said, it’s not the quietest filter out there. After some time, the Bio-Wheel can make a noticeable humming or rattling sound if it’s not perfectly aligned. It’s not a deal breaker, but it does require occasional adjustment to keep noise down. Pros: • Effective mechanical and biological filtration • Bio-Wheel helps maintain healthy bacteria • Easy to install and maintain • Improves water clarity fast Cons: • Can get noisy if the wheel isn’t aligned • Cartridge replacements add ongoing cost Overall, this is a dependable, well-known filter that does its job well. If you don’t mind a little maintenance to keep it quiet, it’s a good choice for most freshwater tanks. ... show more

  • Best filter out there Best filter out there
Size: Up to 15 gallons
We bought a Marineland filter years ago for our 29 gallon tank and loved it. We got out of the hobby for 10 years and just recently set up a 10 gallon tank for our 3 year old. I used the filter that came with the tank but I wasn’t very impressed with it so I purchased another Marineland filter. I’ve only had it plugged in for about 10 minutes and I can already tell it works so much better. I went with the “up to 15 gallons” filter for our 10 gallon and I can see the water moving around the tank. All the nasty stuff in the old filter came out when I pulled it out of the tank and the Marineland filter has gotten about 75% of the gunk floating in the water in about 10 minutes. I also love how there’s space for additional media bags and that you can make the intake shorter. We plan on getting some shrimps so I like the fact that it won’t be so close to the gravel. I read a lot of people complaining about the noise but I think it’s actually quieter than the old filter we had. If your tank doesn’t have enough water it’s obviously going to sound like a little waterfall. (Ignore the end of the video I unclamped the air hose, making that bubbly vibrating sound) ... show more

  • Full review, ignore lower ratings
Size: Up to 60 gallons
These are great filters for a fantastic price (using Amazon Prime). I have several different brands of filters on my four tanks, and the Penguins rock! I'm just going to add my two cents along with the other five- and four-star reviewers. Don't pay attention to the people who give these filters bad ratings. Their issues are coming from ignorant use of the filters. These filters do not self-prime. You must fill the filter reservoir(s) up all the way before attempting to start the filter. If you do not, you will burn the filter out. This is why the one-star people keep killing multiple filters the first day they have them. And as for sound, these filters are incredibly quiet. I have a Penguin 200 running alongside an AC50 in my 29g (yes, I like to over-filter haha) and the Penguin is quieter than the more expensive/trendy AquaClear. The Penguin moves the water very well. If you raise your water level to just over the outflow lip, you will get great surface ripples that extend out to the front of the tank. Greater ripples=greater surface agitation=greater oxygenation of the water. Having the water angle out more laterally also helps get the tank's water to turn over better. My AC dumps the water downwards, which is great in that one spot but does not create a strong barrel current in the tank like the Penguin does. The Penguin 200 has two cartridge slots. I use the first slot for mechanical filtration (I wrap quilting batting around an old plastic cartridge), and Marineland also offers empty cartridge baskets online that you can fill with Biomax, carbon, etc. It also features the Biowheel, which grows beneficial bacteria on it, further increasing your bio filtration. The 350 model is the same; it just has four cartridge slots and two bio wheels. When first running, the wheel spins fairly fast and can create a trickle sound. This bothered me the first couple of days, but soon became therapeutic...just like any of those noise machines people use to simulate the sound of streams, rain, etc. to help them sleep. That being said, after a month or two has passed and the Biowheel begins to slow down a bit from the weight of the stuff growing on it, the trickle noise will disappear completely a the wheel will not be moving fast enough to fling the water with such force. Breakdown and maintenance is easy. Just be sure to thoroughly clean out the filter once every month or two. As long as you're not over-feeding or stay on top of your tank cleaning, the filter should not have any issues remaining fairly clean. To all new hobbyists: DO NOT rinse your filter cartridges/pads nor the Biowheel with tap water. The chlorine in your city water will kill your beneficial bacteria and your cycle will crash. The intake tube has a wonderful adjustable vent towards the top of the tube. This allows the filter to pull in water from both the top and bottom of the tank. You can close it if you want more pull from the bottom, but I like to keep mine open all the way as it helps draw in water that is normally in a dead spot directly below the filter. I love the Penguins and just ordered another 350 to go alongside the Aqua-Tech 30-60 filter in my new 55g. A side note: both the Aqua-Tech 30-60 and Penguin 200/350 share the same types of cartridges. The Aqua-Tech 30-60 actually looks the exact same as the Penguins...just without the Biowheel :) ... show more

  • Excellent for a well planted & stocked 50gal tank
Size: Up to 60 gallons
I have had several different water filters over the years and this one beats them all. I got it thinking it was do a 50 gal tank to find that it is for a 75-100. I was concerned that there would be too strong of a current creates and/or it would be somehow too much for my fish. I bought it so I tried it anyway. I placed it on the far left side of the tank and let it do its thing. I have a heavily stocked fish tank with mostly small fish, tetras, betta’s, Cory’s etc and a lot of plants. Not only does this thing keep my tank clean the fish aren’t bothered in the least. I mean clean. I don’t have to worry about vacuuming it anymore. I don’t have plant matter laying on the bottom for me to try to clean up. I rinse the two filters at two weeks and change them once a month. I can’t express how much I like this filter. There is the sound of the water falling but the filter itself is quiet. The water sounds like a waterfall as that is what is happening. I strongly recommend this filter for a 50gal. I cannot speak to the larger tanks. ... show more

  • Works Great, Biowheel does NOT turn. ~Puchased May 2023
Size: Up to 40 gallons
I have kept aquariums since I was knee high to a duck and I KNOW Marineland has a Great reputation for having excellent products. I knew I couldn't go wrong with a HOB filter, especially being a Marineland! Puchased the Marineland Penguin 200 Power Filter, 200GPH May 2023 it has worked well on establishing a new aquarium, Up and Running on a 40 Extra high, Planted Aquarium (substrate: Soil,Sand, Gravel): The Filter comes with little plastic lids for the top of the filter covers the Intake/Filter area and the biowheel area. I did have to tape the biowheel cover to the filter due to minimal rattling (Easy fix, NOT a deal breaker) I like this idea of the lids it prevents splashing and lowering evaporation. Pump is quiet and has great lifting power to self-prime and great flow! The Intake tube is in 3 parts to customize the length for your particular needs. My Aquarium is 24" tall and therefore required both tubes to ensure collection near the bottom of the Tank. At the midsection of the intake tubing there is also a "flow control" gate/switch built into the tubing to draw in water at the mid level so you can pull water from just the bottom or both bottom and middle. Very cool design idea! :) This model has a space to hold 2 filter cartridges which is nice, especially if you have a planted aquarium and your "Finned Babies" are breeding machines! Anyone want some very Healthy and Robust Black Mollies, Molly Guppy Crosses!? lol More Babies = more waste! :( The pump has nice flow and cleans well. My experience, as my Planted Aquarium becomes well established/aged... Due to my tank size/shape and the inhabitants rapidly overpopulated their forever home, Mollies breed like Guppies, the Filter is not able to keep up with the waste load. I am currently dealing with brown algae in the water column as well as Population control as the filter struggles in keeping the water polished. :( (Using API Algeafix and Accuclear, along with 2-3 25-30% water changes weekly and having to rinse the filters every other day (water tests are all perfect, NO Ammonia/nitrates as it should be in a heavily planted aquarium). At a loss, I feel the filter is just not handling my particular Aquarium's demands... I ordered a larger Canister filter (link below) and will put this MarineLand Penguin 200 Power Filter on my 15gal. back-up/hospital tank it has no substrate, and minimal fake plants for the "Fin Baby's" comfort (should the need ever arise). To sum it up: I recommend the MarineLand Penguin 200 Power Filter, 200GPH for up to 40 gallon (Max) with MINIMAL population OR Strict Population Control! Recommendation: If you have 40Gal and are putting in Live bearers, I recommend going up a filter size or 2 because life throws obstacles at us and before you know it you have a tank full of Live Bearers and they can be tricky to re-home... not everyone has a neighbor with Fish Eating Fish nor can conscientiously send their babies to their demise. Also Note the Biowheel is basically useless, it does NOT turn. Do NOT let this one minor design flaw deter you from purchasing this Filter. Thank you for your time and Happy Aquarium Keeping! :) Canister Filter 370GPH w/UV light: https://a.co/d/2OWJ8Qb Please note that I have only just ordered this filter (Feb 2024) and cannot endorse or recommend the canister filter based on personal experience. The Canister I purchased is based on my needs and has MANY positive reviews. I included this for those who may be in a situation like mine & are curious as to what I am replacing the Marineland HOB filter with. ~Look for my review around April 2024 ... show more
