The Bio-Wheel in the Penguin power filter serves as the biological filtration of the system. It helps in eliminating harmful ammonia and nitrate by encouraging the growth of beneficial bacteria. As water flows over the wheel, these beneficial bacteria break down these harmful chemicals, providing a safe environment for your fish.

Yes, the Penguin filter comes with a mid-level intake and adjustable flow, allowing you to control the speed of water that flows in your aquarium. It allows for custom water circulation based on the needs of your tank's inhabitants.

No, the Bio-Wheel generally does not need replacement unless it is damaged. It is designed to survive the life span of your aquarium, growing more effective as they mature. Replacing the Bio-Wheel can disturb the beneficial bacteria colony that helps with biological filtration.

  • Superb filter system for all tanks
Size: 50 - 75 Gallon Aquarium, 350 GPH
I used to work as a marine biologist for a major state aquarium. Marineland bio pumps have been around forever. I have been using them for both salt and freshwater tanks in gallon sizes ranging from 10-200. All have worked flawlessly and I will continue to use them as both primary and secondary systems. They are far superior to anything except canister systems BUT in some ways, better than canister filters due to ease of maintenance. I will pick 3-4 of these at one time over a single system any day. Simply, one goes down (breaks), another is still keeping your tank clean and filtered. Please read!!! your fish and you will be much happier and stun everyone else... Advantages: 1) You don't have to shut it down. Pull the cartridge, rinse the new one with distilled water, slowly replace it back in the formed slots. No shutting down valves, seals/o-ring probs etc.. 2) They're pretty quiet but can get the "bubbling noise" when your water level drops below a certain point.Typically just below the flat part of the outlets. It won't hurt it or the fish if it does, it just gets that "noisy" waterfall sound which some, people feel it's soothing. Keeping the water level up is a good thing and remember, those bio wheels add oxygen to the water. Canisters don't. 3) They are easy to fix unless the actual motor goes bad. A wheel sticks? clean the roller pins and slots. 5 minutes. Impeller stops? try pulling and just clean the surfaces of the magnet and cavity; again a 5 minute job. You do have to unplug it for those two jobs. TIPS- A) Do yourself a huge favor and buy an extra set or two of cartridges. They are easily found from mom-n-pop pet stores to large chain stores. You CAN rinse the old ones in an emergency. B) Go to the grocery store and get a gl jug of distilled water and keep it. Reason? tap and even well water has trace elements and minerals that will kill the beneficial bacteria and cause a cloudy white appearance (bacterial bloom) for a cpl days. C) Motor/impeller maintenance - Unplug the pump. Lift the cover off, grab the intake tube (square) and slightly wiggle while pulling upward. Clean with a paper towel and white vinegar on the rubber "grommets" and silver pins you see.Basically, make sure everything that is suppose to spin, does so smoothly. D) Bio wheel sticking - Just lift the cover off. No need to unplug. Lift the sticking wheel outuse a Q-tip to clean the slots where the wheel rests. Lightly clean the silver roller pins on the ends. Replace. DO NOT CLEAN OR WASH the paper wheel itself. Sounds like work?? it's not... A canister or in tank filter is ten times more work and messy. These are awesome filters.. Get it and take heed to what I wrote. You'll be happy with it.... ... show more

  • Excellent value on sale and easy to assemble, very efficient.
Size: 50 - 75 Gallon Aquarium, 350 GPH
The items were delivered on-time, very quickly. The Bio-Wheel was easy to assemble, and for the price we bought two filters for the hundred gallon aquarium. They kicked in immediately and started clearing the water. We needed to take out and clean the filters very often because they are so efficient, but that was out bad as the water had become quite clouded due to the failure of previous filters and lack of maintenance. • Full review, ignore lower ratings
Size: 50 - 75 Gallon Aquarium, 350 GPH
These are great filters for a fantastic price (using Amazon Prime). I have several different brands of filters on my four tanks, and the Penguins rock! I'm just going to add my two cents along with the other five- and four-star reviewers. Don't pay attention to the people who give these filters bad ratings. Their issues are coming from ignorant use of the filters. These filters do not self-prime. You must fill the filter reservoir(s) up all the way before attempting to start the filter. If you do not, you will burn the filter out. This is why the one-star people keep killing multiple filters the first day they have them. And as for sound, these filters are incredibly quiet. I have a Penguin 200 running alongside an AC50 in my 29g (yes, I like to over-filter haha) and the Penguin is quieter than the more expensive/trendy AquaClear. The Penguin moves the water very well. If you raise your water level to just over the outflow lip, you will get great surface ripples that extend out to the front of the tank. Greater ripples=greater surface agitation=greater oxygenation of the water. Having the water angle out more laterally also helps get the tank's water to turn over better. My AC dumps the water downwards, which is great in that one spot but does not create a strong barrel current in the tank like the Penguin does. The Penguin 200 has two cartridge slots. I use the first slot for mechanical filtration (I wrap quilting batting around an old plastic cartridge), and Marineland also offers empty cartridge baskets online that you can fill with Biomax, carbon, etc. It also features the Biowheel, which grows beneficial bacteria on it, further increasing your bio filtration. The 350 model is the same; it just has four cartridge slots and two bio wheels. When first running, the wheel spins fairly fast and can create a trickle sound. This bothered me the first couple of days, but soon became therapeutic...just like any of those noise machines people use to simulate the sound of streams, rain, etc. to help them sleep. That being said, after a month or two has passed and the Biowheel begins to slow down a bit from the weight of the stuff growing on it, the trickle noise will disappear completely a the wheel will not be moving fast enough to fling the water with such force. Breakdown and maintenance is easy. Just be sure to thoroughly clean out the filter once every month or two. As long as you're not over-feeding or stay on top of your tank cleaning, the filter should not have any issues remaining fairly clean. To all new hobbyists: DO NOT rinse your filter cartridges/pads nor the Biowheel with tap water. The chlorine in your city water will kill your beneficial bacteria and your cycle will crash. The intake tube has a wonderful adjustable vent towards the top of the tube. This allows the filter to pull in water from both the top and bottom of the tank. You can close it if you want more pull from the bottom, but I like to keep mine open all the way as it helps draw in water that is normally in a dead spot directly below the filter. I love the Penguins and just ordered another 350 to go alongside the Aqua-Tech 30-60 filter in my new 55g. A side note: both the Aqua-Tech 30-60 and Penguin 200/350 share the same types of cartridges. The Aqua-Tech 30-60 actually looks the exact same as the Penguins...just without the Biowheel :) ... show more

  • A good filter, not perfect, but will get the job done.
Size: 50 - 75 Gallon Aquarium, 350 GPH
My experience with this filter so far has been on par with most of the other reviews. I hope I can address some things for anyone thinking about buying this. I have a 55 gallon tank and bought the 350. I dont plan on getting any dirty fish, and considering the movement on this model, I am confident it is enough for the bioload I plan on having. I was leery of getting this over a fluval or aqueon after noise/functionality complaints but if it rates above 4 stars on average it's fair game at that point. It was on sale for about $30 when I ordered it and money talks. Im not an extreme hobbyist or fish wrangler, just a girl who would like a pretty fish tank in her house and has done her homework. So if terms aren't correct or I don't make sense, I apologize. Anyways, To keep it simple, pros and cons: Pros: It is easy to put together. It literally is just common sense linking pieces together and putting in cartridges. It took no more than five minutes. After filling up my tank, and getting it started I was concerned it would be hard to prime. It wasn't. I poured in two cups of water in each side and it was up and spinning. Took about 30 seconds. Max. You put on the little lids which just kind of sit on top of everything without stopping the flow. -The motor IS NOT and SHOULD NOT be loud. I wonder if the people complaining about this followed general fish keeping instructions, let alone the product's. There is a rim at the top of most aquariums, usually black or brown metal/wood. This is where your water level should be regardless of filter. If it is any lower, then there is an amount of space the water has to drop, making more and more noise. The water makes the noise, not the filter. With that said, even the water quickly calms down if people could wait more than 12 hours before writing a review. The instructions clearly tell you to wait at least 24 hours to let the filter break in. The only thing I can hear from roughly 3-4 feet away is trickling water, which is considered white noise and something human beings can naturally block out within a matter of minutes. If I focus on it, yeah duh I can hear it, but it is not enough to tickle me bothered. Its sound, but not unpleasant sound. If you have an aversion to white noise (the sound of thunderstorms, babbling brooks, the sound of the beach) then I suppose this isn't the filter for you. But none of the folks in my house have said "AHH CURSE THAT LOUD FILTER I CANT HEAR THE TV!" -It has room for 4 cartridges at a time. In a sense, that would be great for bigger bioloads without having to get additional filters. Its a nice option. Not one I need right now, but I appreciate the thought. -I cant confirm or deny whether or not it is at 350 gph, but it definitely pushes out enough water to lead me to believe it does. I trust it. Cons: The noise may not be for everyone. I could easily fall asleep with a sound like this in my room. But, I can see why someone couldn't. In my living room it is drowned out. But, if you are all very quiet people who dont make a sound all day, then I suppose you would hear it a lot. We yell and laugh and generally live in our living room thus I could easily be downplaying the sound. -Theres no way to control the flow. I don't need to, but it wouldve been nice at least. -The instructions dont really specify what this one part is. Its a knobule on the intake that moves up and down between vented and covered. I have no clue what it does but would be happy to be enlightened. -This is personal opinion, but its not very nice looking. Ive seen other filters and they dont seem so...intrusive. I appreciate it's size and power but the intake just makes me feel like theres this invasive hand reaching in my tank and gobbling up water. In a 55 gallon there is only one place to put it--in the back corner, next to a heater, tubing, and what I consider the "ugly corner" full of tubing and the heater. Mine is poorly covered with silk plants. In conclusion, its a good filter with some setbacks. I will chalk up any users with mechanical issues being lazy and not cleaning/maintaining it regularly. If you don't want to do that then I say spend the money on something more expensive. It isn't delicate, per se, but I would expect anything in which you are paying a smidge less you could take a whopping 15 minutes every month to clean and check to make sure it is functioning properly instead of whining until the motor burns out from lack of care. ... show more

  • Excellent for a well planted & stocked 50gal tank
Size: 50 - 75 Gallon Aquarium, 350 GPH
I have had several different water filters over the years and this one beats them all. I got it thinking it was do a 50 gal tank to find that it is for a 75-100. I was concerned that there would be too strong of a current creates and/or it would be somehow too much for my fish. I bought it so I tried it anyway. I placed it on the far left side of the tank and let it do its thing. I have a heavily stocked fish tank with mostly small fish, tetras, betta’s, Cory’s etc and a lot of plants. Not only does this thing keep my tank clean the fish aren’t bothered in the least. I mean clean. I don’t have to worry about vacuuming it anymore. I don’t have plant matter laying on the bottom for me to try to clean up. I rinse the two filters at two weeks and change them once a month. I can’t express how much I like this filter. There is the sound of the water falling but the filter itself is quiet. The water sounds like a waterfall as that is what is happening. I strongly recommend this filter for a 50gal. I cannot speak to the larger tanks. ... show more

  • A good choice for an affordably over the back filter
Size: 50 - 75 Gallon Aquarium, 350 GPH
I bought this filter for my wife's goldfish tank and crammed this monster into a 20 gallon tank knowing her babies would need to expand as goldfish do. The Marineland filter has served quite well, I'm big on oversizing my filters and setting significantly lower and advertised expectations but this filter has performed well. Even after the goldfish migrated to a 55 gallon tank this filter keeps up admirably as I debate adding a canister filter I find myself in no big hurry as the water stays quite clean. I am not a fan of the insert filters in general, other brands have left me severely jaded, but these do well for what they are. Under different conditions it might not be the ideal solution, my 125 gallon tropical tank I would be changing filters every other day I think but for our goldfish this is an awesome solution. The biowheels are a good idea but implementation leaves a little to be desired. The basic idea of the biowheels is to create additional surface area to actively grow bacteria that are the unseen backbone of your aquarium system. My issue is with how they can clog up, gunk up, start growing stuff inside that creates weight which inhibits the wheels movement in a system that's already prone to binding up creating a stuck wheel that isn't doing what it was designed to. Replacement of the wheel is on the pretty ridiculous side when I can buy a whole new filter for a few bucks more. Noise is actually good with all the cover pieces in place. I have cats who like to use uncovered over the backs as a water fountain and drink all my water. The covers lock on nicely and prevent my cats from accelerating the evaporation loss. The access port in the main suction tube can be a bit of a problem if water level drops to it the pump starts sucking air and no longer performs its intended duty. Priming is simple, pour a little water into the back compartment and it'll pick up and run no problem. I only with my canister filter was so easy to prime. Overall, a good pump at a good price. As long as you're realistic in recognizing that the industry claims for what a pump can do (up to X gallon tank) is under best conditions and minimal bio load then the only real gripe is the bio wheel design and the port in the main suction tube. I'm considering another one for a smaller tank with glofish and dwarf gourami's, filters are affordable and it's just plain smart to use filters that use the same media (less to stockpile on hand and filters won't go to waste if a pump dies or stops being used). Definitely a great choice if you aren't quite up to a canister filter and looking for an affordable, effective solution. ... show more
