Features

  • Enhanced Performance: Multi-stage filter pumps out 700 US Gal (2,650 L) of water per hour, with the patented Smart Pump advanced microchip technology continuously monitoring and optimizing pump performance.
  • Self-Starting: Just add water, plug in and Smart Pump technology will take over. Any trapped air is auto-evacuated every 12 hours to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Multi-functional Utility Valve: Drain at the base makes it possible to empty the canister and perform seamless water changes by draining and refilling water directly from it. Convenient lid-mounted hosing clips offers clean storage when not in use.
  • 4-Stage Filtration: Four removable filter baskets eliminate water bypass and hold up to 1 US Gal (3.9 L) of media: mechanical, chemical, and biological. These baskets enable you to stack in the precise combination that will work best for your aquarium.
  • Compact and Quiet Design: FX4 canister filter stands 16.5 (42 cm) tall and easily fits under most aquariums. Unidirectional impeller has fewer mechanical joints for reduced noise. Rubber feet reduce vibration and add stability.

Description

Fluval FX4 is a high performance canister filter with many outstanding features designed to make aquarium fish keeping easier and more convenient than ever. This super capacity yet compact canister filter has a pump output of 700 gallons of water and has a filter circulation of 450 GPH, which both work to produce cleaner and healthier results. Filtering material can easily be placed in a removable stack of media baskets, which is at the heart of Fluval's multistage filtration. The baskets are precision-engineered to eliminate water by-pass, making filtration more efficient. The baskets can hold a total of 1 gallon of media and can be stacked in the precise combination of layers that will work best for your aquarium. Each one is lined with a foam insert for effective mechanical pre-filtering. Instant-release T-handles let you lift and separate the baskets quickly and easily, making routine maintenance simpler. FX4 also features Smart Pump Technology, which provides optimal filter performance. This advanced technological feature employs an electronic circuit board that continually monitors the pump. Impeller speed and force are constantly measured to ensure powerful output and energy efficiency. It also manages the filter's self-starting feature and evacuates air that may enter or build up within the filtration system. On a 12-hour cycle, the pump will pause and allow trapped air to escape, ensuring the best filtration efficiency. Only 16.5 inches in height, FX4 fits under most aquariums. Fluval first broke onto the aquatic scene in 1975 by introducing the world’s first 3-stage filter with synchronous motor technology. Since then, Fluval has built a legacy around this pioneering spirit, relentlessly adapting in a changing world to launch innovative aquarium products. Fluval’s mission is not just about building products that mimic the natural world, but inspiring aquarists of all skill levels to enjoy and respect the hobby for generations to come.

  • Wow! This filter is quiet!
Size: FX6
I purchased this for a 20 gallon tank to help with cloudy water from algae as my little Aqueon filter couldn't hack it. I took it out of the box and whoa, it's a beast! I thought maybe it was going to be too much filter for the tank, I was wrong, it's a great size. The canister itself goes together very nicely and both inlet and return connectors are clearly marked and very strong. The hoses are beefy and very stiff, which is the only troubling issue that I'm dealing with. The very simple and small instruction pamphlet suggests to soak the hoses in warm water to make them more pliable. I did this, it worked ok, until the hoses got back to RT. The tube sizes are quite large and the tank lid does not sit flush. I belive I will change to a tank mounted light rather than a top. I've found the intake tube to be very long and is sitting at the bottom of the tank, I'm not really a fan of that, but so far it seems alright. Priming... well, the priming pump on the canister is smooth and has decent suction unless there is a lot of air in the canister, and this made priming the tubes quite frustrating. I'm not an expert, fairly new at keeping fish, and I've always used a hang on the side filter, so this was a new method of filtration. It took me about 15-20 minutes to get the tubes properly primed and full, how I did it still not sure, but when it happened, outflow was nice and steady. The instructions did not have any suggestions or methods to make it easier, and as a new user of a canister filter, I would have liked to have had that. I'll have to make some adjustments with the tubes but that's a minor inconvenience. This filter is definitely worth the money, you shouldn't be disappointed. ... show more

  • It’s clean
Size: FX4
I really like this filtration canister. It does a great job of keeping my saltwater aquarium very clean. The only thing I don’t like is that it’s very bulky, but that’s OK. What matters is that? It does a great job and filtering I highly recommend it. It’s a little pricey, but it is a great canister filter. ... show more

  • Don't look any further - this is the canister filter to get!
Size: FX6
What a spectacular filter - 5 star all around I've had an FX6 for about 5 months now for my 95 gallon Malawi cichlid tank and it's been nothing but great so far. It's well built, has lots of room for media and bio foam; and is surprisingly easy to maintenance. The valve at the bottom with a small hose into a bucket makes it so easy to drain the water from the canister before you disconnect it, move it, or open it. By the time it's drained it's really light and easy to move; so then you just pop off the lid and pull out the buckets all in one piece with the T-bars. No poop water splashing everywhere, no mess. It's a great design. Then when you put it back together, the smart pump is not only quiet but it also makes super easy to prime - just plug it in. That's it. The performance is amazing - the modular design of bucket within bucket allows for a huge amount of volume in a fairly compact overall canister. I also got some dielectric food grade synthetic grease (Super Lube) for the handful of various sized O-rings on this - recommended for anyone with a canister filter of any kind unless you like risking potential massive floods. ... show more

  • See below for positives, negatives, and tips!
Size: FX6
Canister filters get too bad of a wrap... I think the use case for them CAN be great for some. Positive You can take the entire filtration system out and clean it (very hard to do with sump, and yes, detritus/other waste can get past your mechanical filtration, and get stuck on your biological media/tank walls/etc) Very quiet Good flow through aquarium... can be a negative I use mine on a 75g tank, and a sand substrate. The flow is so nice that all the detritus ends up in the canister, and I never have to gravel vac the sand, like, ever. I had to use one 530 GPH wave maker to assist with one dead spot, but it cost like 12 bucks. The detritus has to end up somewhere. Either you have to gravel vac it out, or it gets stuck in your mechanical filtration. I'd rather just concentrate it in one spot (the canister) so I don't have to look at it, and clean out my canister once every two weeks in a heavily stocked African cichlid 75g tank. Keeps the tank sparkling clean, Ammonia/nitrites at zero, and Nitrates are 10ppm after a couple months of use (could be higher later, I'll be sure to monitor it closely) Negative Expensive More difficult maintenance than hang on back, but less frequent. Too much flow can be a problem for some fish Big Tips 1. Buy an extra outlet valve, and attach a 1 inch pond hose to it. and BOOM you have a python that is MUCH faster. I can fill 40 gallons of water for a 50% water change in about 5 minutes from a storage container 20 feet away in my bathtub that already has dechlorinator/buffer/cichlid salt in it, and I stick a digital thermometer in the storage container when filling it to make sure I don't shock my fish with a sudden temp change that is EASY to do with a python. 2. The drain valve is painfully slow for large water changes, but this is an option as well. Use a 5/8 inch reinforced hose, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MRUROKO/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_10?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1. Taking the hose off can make a mess if you have leftover water in the hose, so you can use a 5/8 quick release fitting with valves. (valve shuts off flow of water when the fitting is released). Part numbers: HFCD221012 HFCD171012 This will make the flow rate even slower (valves slow water flow when they are this type), but it eliminates the chance of making a mess. 3. How to keep the inlet/outlet hoses out of the way during maintenance: A. Attach a 3m command strip hook to the underside of the aquarium, right above the canister filter. B. Attach a loose zip tie to the outlet and inlet valves C. When moving the canister in/out of the aquarium, hook the inlet/outlet hoses to the underside of the aquarium so they are not in the way 4. Make sure when setting up the aquarium that the outlet valve is as short and direct as possible. The inlet can be long, as it is gravity fed through the principles of a syphon, but the outlet has to be actively pumped by the canister, and flow rates can be much slower if it is far away. I guess you could use this knowledge to your advantage if you desire lower flow rates. ... show more

  • Works great
Size: FX4
This is the second FX4 we've bought we currently run one on our 75 gallon and just bought this one for our 125 gallon tank and it keeps our tanks crystal clear. They are easy to clean and set up and work great. We've had our FX4 on our 75 gallon now for 4 years with no issues.
