Top Amazon Reviews

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars A thorough review, I hope
Any review of hearing amplifiers is going to be limited by the degree of hearing loss of the reviewer, the type of hearing loss (e.g., the sound frequencies affected), the experience of the reviewer with different brands and types of hearing assistance devices, the age and physical condition of the user, and the user's financial constraints. So, I'll try to define those things and hopefully give you some context on which to base your decision about buying the Vomues hearing "aid." I also want to point out that emerging research suggests that correcting hearing loss may be crucial to cognitive health. When the brain stops receiving robust, full-spectrum sound, not only does the auditory cortex suffer, but so does the brain as a whole. When I began regularly wearing hearing assistance devices, I noticed that my attention was more engaged, and the enhanced sound improved my speed and ability to do many daily tasks. So, if you have hearing loss, I suggest you get and continuously wear hearing assistance devices. I'm a 68-year-old retired male biomedical researcher with mild hearing loss. I can understand speech in quiet settings but have substantial difficulty if there is ambient noise. Ticking clocks, rustling clothes, birdsong, and the distant crowing of a rooster are profoundly muted and often unheard. My audiologist classified my hearing loss as "mild approaching moderate." I have presbycusis, which is commonly referred to as "the hearing loss of old age." I have used a variety of hearing amplifiers, including the Audien Atom and the Ibstone, and two Rx quality hearing aids that were tuned for me by an audiologist, Kirkland's Rexton ($1,500) and the Eargo 6 ($2,250). The difference between a hearing aid and a hearing amplifier is that the hearing aid can be tuned to amplify only the sound frequencies you are deficient in hearing. If you want a high-quality hearing aid that reduces background noise and provides clear speech sound, the Eargo leaves all the others I've mentioned in the dust. It is also incredibly comfortable, and its smartphone dynamic, in-ear adjustment app is beyond compare. The principal downside to the Eargo is its cost of $1,250 per year since it only last two years. Because they were that expensive, I had considerable anxiety about losing one. Like many people considering the Vomues, I don't have that money to spend regularly. The Vomues amplifier satisfies my budget and is, for me, a reasonable compromise over the Eargo. I find it superior to the Atom and Instone amplifiers in the following ways: 1) The quality of the speech amplification is noticeably better than Ibstone and much better than the Atom. 2) Background noise discrimination is also superior to both other amplifiers, but not by a lot. 3) The auto-on feature is more important than you might think because if you inadvertently put an Ibstone amplifier in the charger when it is on, the odds are good that it will damage or destroy it. I did this twice; the first time resulted in degraded performance, and the second time caused the device to fail. The replacement cost for these two mistakes was $150, which is more than I paid for the original pair. 4) Ibstone has not responded to my email inquiries about purchasing a single replacement unit. 5) Neither the Atom nor the Ibstone has the combination carrying case and recharger Vomues has. This has turned out to be a surprisingly important feature. When I need to remove the devices, I can immediately put them into an ergonomically well-designed carrying case/charger where they begin recovering the charge lost during use. Unlike the rectangular Ibstone carrying case, the Vomues case is smooth and round and easily slips into and out of my pocket. Its magnetic closure is a dream compared to fumbling with the Ibstone's clumsy latch. This is particularly important if you're in the car, at a restaurant, or otherwise engaged or distracted. 6) Inserting the Vomues amplifiers into the charging sockets is noticeably easier than with the Atom or the Ibstone devices. 7) The Costco Rexton hearing aids were a nightmare for me. They were worse in speech clarity, burned through costly batteries at an unacceptable rate, and were dislodged easily by my glasses. If you wear glasses behind the ear hearing aids, they are likely to be frustrating – they can fly off your head and be especially hard to find when in a restaurant. Indeed, I "lost" one when a server stepped on it after it had just come flying from behind my ear – an $800 expense, not to mention the inconvenience. The downsides to the Vomues amplifiers are: 1) They are very sensitive to feedback, much more so than the Atom or Ibstone. This may be a deal breaker for some because even if properly fitted (using the correct sized dome for your ears) and volume adjusted, they are prone to feedback during vigorous chewing and if obstructed, such as by raising your arm in front of your ear or opening a cabinet door. Ditto if they become loose. This may not happen if you need less amplification since the sensitivity to feedback seems to scale disproportionately with the amount of amplification. 2) You will likely get feedback when placing or removing them from your ears, and the higher your amplification requirement, the more unpleasant this will be. I've found the five-second delay to activation to be meaningless. 3) As others here have noted, the volume control provides no manual feedback. It is impossible to sense how much the adjustment screw has moved except by looking at it. This makes setting the volume time-consuming and frustrating. It is a significant drawback to the quality and convenience of the Vomues amplifiers. In summary, I find the Vomues amplifiers are good value for money and more pleasant to use due to the charger/case. The sound quality is noticeably better than that offered by Atom or Ibstone. If I were younger and more active, I'd find a way to afford the Eargo since it is more convenient and offers superior sound. It also will not accidentally come out of your ear. The final important point is that hearing assistance devices, unlike eyeglasses, require several months of sustained use for the brain to readjust. This may be an uncomfortable period for some, but once it passes, there is a subtle but important improvement in hearing quality and life. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Looks professional and good quality
These have better tone and volume than my wife's $3000 hearing aids. It is very difficult for her to insert the aid in her left ear, in fact, so difficult that she seldom tries. Whether this is the fault of the hearing aid or the shape of the ear, I am not certain. It has excellent volume control, but it is difficult to adjust because of the small, hidden screw. The hearing aids and the charger have a quality appearance. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Learning curve to make it stay in place
I bought this for my mother-in-law who is a bit hard of hearing. Unfortunately, she is not comfortable with the tiny antenna sticking out. Also, she struggles with keeping it in place. Despite that, I would recommend the hearing aid, as the sound quality is really good. When she does wear it, my typically loud-voiced mil starts talking in whispers because her own sound is amplified well. She uses it to watch movies mostly ... show more

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like these, but...
It makes me a bit sad to have sent these back. I do need some moderate level hearing assist, and based on the reviews this looked to be the thing. Well, they may be for many others, but not in my case. Pros are that these are nice and compact. Feel and look quality made. Battery life and rechargeability are very good. The sound quality is okay. I found the highs and mids okay, lows lacking. This wasn't too bad as it helped cover my tinitus, but made hearing deep voices a new challenge. Three primary, and crucial issues for me were: 1) fussiness of setting the volume. Either a stiffer dial, or something with physical gradients so you can fell the resistance. Because of this it was a challenge to get these comfortably dialed in - which I couldn't. 2) I'm on the telephone daily for work. I don't use a headset, I use a HANDset (oldish school, I know), and every time I got the earpiece close to my ear the aid would stop transmitting. Really problematic. Sure I could take that piece out when on the phone, but that's not a valid option in my work environment. 3) not exactly a problem of the device, but worth noting; one of my ear canals is really narrow. I couldn't get even the small ear gaskets to fit comfortably, and even tried the smallest of foam gaskets I use for my inear stage monitors, and that didn't even work. Comfort and fit are crucial for extended use, and personally I wasn't getting that. I did get a full refund on the product, so it was worth a shot. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what my Grandmother needed!!
I bought these heating aids for my Grandmother who has significant hearing loss from years of working in a very loud factory. She has wanted hearing aids for a very long time but thought that she could never afford any that would actually help her. She tried a pair more expensive than these and couldn’t use them so she eventually threw them away and gave up hope. For Mother’s Day this year I wanted to get some for her that would hoped help her and make her happy. I read review for so many products before deciding to choose these. The reviews are honest.. my grandmother didn’figured out for to with them and adjust them with no help which was surprise because she usually struggles to figure things out. She told me that they’re comfortable and they have no feedback. She said she can hear the phone ring and the door knocks and hear people taking which helps her to feel more included in conversations. She said she’s hearing things she hasn’thearw well in many years. She’s so happy with these hearing aids and that makes me very happy too. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Very good hearing aid.
I bought these hearing aids for my mother-in-law . She was happy because she could hear everything 😃. And we liked the fact that they last long charged. And you don’t have to put in batteries anymore. You just charge them like a cell phone. I gave it a 4 not a 5 because one of them kept on coming out of her ear, and every time before putting them on it makes a loud noise, but then the noise goes away as soon as they are in place inside the ear. We were very pleased with these hearing aids. (Very discreet) ... show more
