I love these roller shades! Sesame color is a very close color match to my siding. I purchased these 2 to install on a portion of a wrap-around porch to block the afternoon sun, which is brutal 6 months of the year, to the point of not being able to enjoy the side porch until after the sun is behind the tree line. I ordered the ones that use the hand crank bar to try them out before purchasing the total number needed. They were very easy to install and look great! Manual crank to lower and raise is easy, smooth and not an issue for me. They block the sun enough to where we aren't blinded (or scorched), yet we can still see through them enough to see the cows and calves in the pastures that surround us on 3 sides. Gotta love country living! Downside: 1 of the 2 shades ordered arrived damaged. They were not in a packing carton, but rather in the original "flimsy" plastic casing you'd expect if you were buying them off the shelf at a retail store. I was very disappointed. HOWEVER, I initiated the return of the damaged shade via Amazon, the damaged item was picked up, and I had a replacement 2 days later. The replacement arrived appropriately packaged in shipping-worthy, heavy-duty packaging. No questions were asked, no back-and-forth emails or phone calls necessary. They went above and beyond to ensure I was a satisfied customer. I will be ordering 9 more shades to complete the porch, and I will definitely be ordering the next 3 very soon. 5 stars for the product and particularly for the no-hassle customer service response! ... show more

Let's see, I live in s. Florida and have quite a few orchids that can be brought out to my lanai from Fall -early spring. A small palm tree used to shade the orchids but it had to be removed leaving the orchids in sunshine which is a no, no for many of them. I was searching for some kind of lightweight shade to hang and found this item. It's PERFECT. It's almost like burlap but much thinner and prettier. The lighter color is a muted yellow/beige that still allows some light through. Hubby hung it just yesterday. He did have to first install 2 strips of wood (painted) on which to screw the hardware. Then installed the shade without any problems. It appears to be very nicely constructed. I moved all orchids to the lanai and this morning lowered the shade halfway which protected my plants perfectly. Hopefully this shade will last a long time. Highly recommend. ... show more

This is a superb sun shade! It raises and lowers smoothly and easily, provides very good shade, and the fabric is very durable. I am writing this review four years after installing them, which is a testament to their quality, surviving this long in the Texas sun. The reason for this review is to recommend a pre-installation step. We have two of these shades, and the gears that operate the shades both failed within days of each other. The fix was pretty easy - just search for Universal Mounting Brackets for Exterior Sun Shades, Crank-Operated, and you’ll find replacements. But, you can prevent the failure by disassembling the gear housings when they’re new and greasing the soft pot metal gear. On both of ours, that gear had frozen up in the housing, resulting in the much harder metal drive gear shearing off the softer driven gear teeth. Open the housing and grease the driven gear at both ends and you should be good for many years! ... show more

I got two of these for my covered deck to block the afternoon sun and they work perfectly. They allow air flow and some vision through them, depending on the angle of the sun.     • 50% UV blockage. Best for nighttime to enjoy outdoor beauty with privacy. Handle needs to be longer.

OPACITY: In the Hawaii sun, this offers what I perceive as 50% UV blockage, and therefore, is not recommended for areas receiving direct sunlight for more than 5 minutes/day... unless you want faded/hot (temperature) furniture or faded linens. Had to minus one-and-a-half stars for this. A night, the shade allows you to see the city-/mountain-scape through its large holes, but where people see you in silhouette and can see the color of your clothing, but not your facial features. (I tested it out, by viewing my patio from about 40 yrs away and having someone wave to me at night.) However, I bought this as a shield from the sun-- not to make my nights more enjoyable. MEASUREMENTS + BASE OF SHADE: If you're looking for an 8 ft. wide (wall to wall) x 6 ft. long (floor to ceiling) area, then order the 8' x 8' shade, as I needed an 8'x6' and this thing is about 2" too short (floor to ceiling) after mounting, so there is a gap where people can see my patio under the shade. However, I love that it came w/ holders for the balls at the bottom of the shade (balls attached to elastic and goes into a ball mount on the wall), so the shade can remain in place and won't become a kite when the wind blows = adding a star. CRANK: The crank is not easy, and hence, minus a star. You need to hold the handle practically perpendicular to the shade, before you can crank the handle the move the shade up/down = you need much space between yourself and the shade. Also, because the handle is short, and I am short (5 ft), I needed to stand on a stepstool to do this. If you do not plan on rolling the shade up/down often, then this shouldn't be an issue for you, but in Hawai`i and with the changing weather with frequent bouts of rain/sun/wind, it became an issue for me. I would rate this a 3.5 stars out of five, but since Amazon shipped it quickly to Hawaii, the box and product arrived in perfect condition, and the installation was straightforward per the instructions, I am rating this shade as 4/5 stars. ... show more

Installed on the back patio on 2 sides, I find these help with the afternoon heat. They were easy to install and not at all flimsy for the 8 foot size. The crank mechanism works well also. If there's any breeze they do need anchoring and that's to be expected (they come with anchors but I'm using bungee cords for my configuration). With all of these type blinds, I'd be reluctant to leave them unattended while away due to the possibility of an unforeseen wind event. Recommended. ... show more
