Like rowing, the WaterFlywheel does not apply resistance to you, you apply work to it; you are the engine. By the "rule of cubes", the amount of work you apply dictates the speed at which you row. From a gentle paddle to a “give it your all” workout, you are in control When rowing, remember, you are the engine. The amount of work you do is dependent on you, not on the machine. The more work you do, the more resistance/drag you can overcome, and the faster you move. The speed which you can maintain is dependent on the level of work you can maintain and, again, is limited only by you. Row harder and you go faster, row easier and you go slower. The WATERROWER's unique WaterFlywheel design uses a specially formed paddle to cup the moving water, reduce slippage and produce an unrivaled simulation of the benefits of rowing. There is no jerkiness or jarring which is often associated with conventional mechanical rowing machines making the exercise unpleasant; only smooth even load, kind to the body, and relaxing to the mind. There is no "solid" connection between user and the moving water, simply an immersed paddle which dampens out any detrimental mechanical feel Providing some "give" is essential for accommodating bad or developing technique, lessening the risk of injury. A uniform stroke is essential to spreading the work more evenly over the muscle groups, working the muscle groups in proportion to their strength, optimizing exercise benefit while reducing risk of injury. The S4 Monitor measures the speed of the paddle using an infrared detector mounted on the underside of the top deck and a castellated Sensor Pickup mounted on the inner clutch bush. The motion of the paddle revolved the sensor disk which in turn triggers the infrared detector. I wanted something basic, something well built, and a rower that didn't drag me into an ecosystem of never ending expenses. I don't want a 15 inch touch screen that can't do anything more than regurgitate the content of rowing programs. Doesn't anyone think a simple HDMI cable to occasionally play a movie would be a good idea on those other expensive rowers? This rower is exceptionally well made. It is relatively easy to setup. It's easy to store and move around my home gym. It's smooth and consistent in operation. It looks like well made furniture. Yes, the program/computer that comes with is very basic. But it does EXACTLY what I need it to do and doesn't tie me into monthly fees to be guided in my exercise routine. I bought a very stable but inexpensive phone/tablet holder to mount on the frame and now I can easily watch any content I want while using this rock solid rower and I get the approximate feel of rowing through water but in a design that is simple, durable, and won't suffer from maintenance when computers, magnets, screens, or other mechanisms eventually wear out. Simple is also elegant, and in this case, beautiful. The resistance variability is the only thing I wish was easier to manage. Once filled with water, it's a small ordeal to add or remove water to vary the resistance and thus, impossible during the workout. However, the resistance at max water is significant and it's easy to work your way into a routine that is slower and approximate until you're ready to take it up a level or two or three. We decided to order this rowing machine after seeing it at a family member’s home. My husband was concerned about not being as strong and in the shape he used to be so he wanted to try this. I was impressed with all the choices of wood this rower came on. After ordering it arrived quickly. My husband got it assembled in about 45 minutes and has used it religiously every day. I use it as well, not as much as he does since I get other excercise, but so far I am very impressed. And the company has great customer service. We had some questions before ordering and they were very helpful and friendly. This rower is well worth the money. It appears to be well made and I expect it to last quite a while. ... show more

We were skeptical about this piece of equipment. But after reading some reviews, we decided to take the plunge. So glad we did. We are more than pleased with this piece of equipment. Especially since as former marathoners and now old-timers, this machine really helps use re-gain the mobility and flexibility we lost over the years. We love that we can both use the machine without changing any attributes, since it's water resistance based. What we also love is the aesthetics -- the natural wood really lends to a focus furniture piece rather than a typical exercise machine. Hubby is a double hip replacement subject so this machine really has done wonders for his mobility. He's not walking around like a zombie and has been touting it's virtues. Granted, he has'nt been able to go more than 5 min. on the machine yet, but so far it's been the best for aerobic exercise. The assembly was a bit of a challenge. More so since hubby is more illustration driven than written instruction driven. But the two of us managed to construct an awesome piece of equipment with the help of a rubber mallet (we had issues with the placement of the foot rest.) The S4 monitor that comes with the unit does a decent job of tracking your stats. But if you are looking for a challenge, you probably need to subscribe to a service. Granted, I loved the stats that the waterpower provides, but we'll probably need to subscribe to a service to get the most out of the machine. If you're looking for a functional, yet aesthetic rower/exercise machine, the Waterrower in my opinion is the best option out there. ... show more

I am a typical American person who is overweight and pre-dietetic due a lifestyle of too much stress, to little exercise and the addition of the COVID weight gain. I want to make better choices and get healthy. So, with this in mind, I did research to find equipment that could meet my goal of cardio and minor strength training while being easy on my body (I’m older and don’t want to ruin my joints with hard impacts until my strength and weight are where they need to be) Rowing was recommended as a way to increase flexibility, stamina, strength and great cardio without being overly taxing on your body. This manufacturer and this machine was highly recommended by fitness magazines, some health care professionals and obviously the market place reviews. Now, I ALWAYS take reviews with a grain of salt. But the thing that kept coming up was the ease of use and the sound it makes while in use. I can honestly say, it is very meditating hearing the water churn with each stroke. Like being on a nice calm lake and you are rowing your boat. I really enjoy it. There is an onboard computer that tracks your time/distance/calories burned/workout session and other functions. It has no app separate so you need to use the computer if you want to track anything. Not an issue for me. The machine arrived in three boxes (normally two but I added the upgraded riser kit so the machine would be about a foot off the floor when in use). The one huge box contains the water bowl, the foot board and the pulley system, seat and various hardware to put everything together. The other long box was the rails and storage wheels. The instructions were clear and very detailed. Previous reviews lamented on things not lining up properly or needed additional holes drilled… this was NOT the case for me. However you must not fully tighten any of the hardware until the entire unit is put together. This is VERY IMPORTANT. You might need to push or pull on some items to get things to line up 100% because it is wood and wood can swell if it is humid during assembly. The assembly went very smoothly and quickly. Filling the water tank was a little tricky but as other have mentioned, just use the provided siphon tube and you will be fine. Make sure to add the water stabilization tablet so you don’t end up with funky water. It comes with two (replace once every 6 months of use) and when you register the machine you get these tablets free for life - really) Finally, the machine is solid, sturdy for me (I’m 6’3” 268lbs) and very smooth to use. It stands up when not in use and can be moved around if needed. The riser kit is an extra cost but makes getting onto and off of the rower easier for me. The sound of actually rowing in water and the resistance it provides (water will not compress so the harder you row the more resistance there is) works very well for me. Again, I’m not getting paid for this review. I bought the rower and zero discounts or kickbacks. In today’s world of fake news, influencer culture and paid reviews…. It’s sad that I have to add that disclaimer. For those that got though all of this, I hope you take my review for what it is. Do some of your own research and hopefully you purchase this rower from a company that actually is in America (Rhode Island) and is a real one with real people that can answer your questions and provide lifetime care. ... show more

I am very pleased with my WaterRower. It came early (before the expected delivery date) and was fairly easy to assemble. I’ve been using it for about a month. The action is very smooth. It is the closest machine I know of that gives a full-body workout. The electronic monitor is comprehensive; one can program it in many ways. It is attractive (I got the walnut). It was expensive but for me is very good value for money. Finally, it is very easy to store upright and when stored takes up very little room. Highly recommended. ... show more

    • Good machine with no development in 20 years

I can't take many stars off because iFitnessDirect delivered this machine quickly and it is pretty well built. Although there was a big scratch on the tank. Its just cosmetic, but kind of disappointing to see in a "brand new" item. I owned another one of these rowers 20 years ago and basically rowed it into the ground. I put 10s of millions of meters on it to the point where everything was starting to fall apart. On one hand, this is great. I.e. the machine stands the test of time. But, in good conscience, I can not give it 5 stars. What eventually did my old machine in was the glue that holds the top and bottom of the tank started cracking and fell out. This highlighted a flaw in the design in that the top tank fits over the bottom (i.e. the water will just leak out if the glue fails). In 20 years, the best solution waterrower has been able to come up with is to put a piece of tape over the seal. This means that 1. They are aware of the problem and 2. They have no desire to fix it or competent engineers at the company to design a real solution. Just flipping the tank upside down would go a long way to addressing this issue. My other complaint is that in 20 years they have made literally zero advances to their computer. This is surprising to say the least. Just to be able to source tech parts for 20+ years is difficult. It would have been really nice if they had hired one engineer in 20 years to re-design the computer. It is exceptionally simple, would be an easy project, and would add value to the machine if it had some very basic features. On the other hand, if you want an old water based rower that just works, this is not a bad choice. ... show more

    • Elegant, quiet and extremely solid
I'm a soon-to-be 60 ex-jock that used to run and use weights/machines to stay fit. A demanding job and a bum knee rendered that exercise regimen unsustainable which led to a 35-lb weight gain over the last 3 years. Elliptical machines used to be my favorite because of their low impact but they are ugly and impractical to move around the home if you buy one that's worth buying. I've been considering a rower for about 18 months but never really researched it heavily until I watched House of Cards and realized that, like Frank, I needed to get into shape and better health. I purchased the WaterRower Classic. Putting it together was quite straightforward but I had a challenge with the first piece that serves as a brace and spacer at the end of the rails. The holes/screws were just a bit out of alignment. It took about 15 to 20 minutes to get them to align so that I could tighten it down. The rest was a breeze. The instructions are quite sufficient and it's not very complex. My first use reassured me that this was an exercise that I could see becoming a habit. I awaken between 4 and 5 AM every day. I spend two hours usually doing computer work. The WaterRower is so silent that I can use it when I awaken without awakening every living thing in the house. It's comforting swooshing sound (not at all like the mechanical sound of the rower on House of Cards) does not awaken others and provides a mellow white noise in the morning. Of course, being new to me, I don't yet have the stamina to use it for more than five minutes at a time. That will change, I'm sure. It is smooth, quite and solid as a rock. Nothing seems cheap about it - given what I paid I don't know how anything could be cheap on it. I've read reviews about the foot rests being flimsy - I believe that's a design feature that they flex. Nothing seems cheap. As far as the quality of the workout you get: like any workout you get what you put into it but I assure you, even low intensity use is taxing if done for an extended period of time. You feel it working everything but only after you finish and get up to find muscle groups pleasantly stressed. For me - this is the perfect form of exercise. If anything changes with the quality or durability of this WaterRower, I will update my review. I plan to update this periodically so you know it works. ... show more
