  • IMO as a lifelong hearing aid user
I've needed hearing aids my whole life. I have moderate to profound hearing loss. I am 43. I've had many pairs before and after deregulation. I've also tried amplifiers. These are a no obvious frills, self fitting hearing aid with simple setup and great sound quality. Some of the almost unnoticed frills are very little feedback from close contact with ears, little feedback from close ear contact, rechargability, comfort, limited visibility even with my small ear canals, and ease of use. Very small and discrete. I cannot comment on reliability because I have only had them for a week. A great value from what I have seen. Everything sounds great. ... show more

  • Updated. Charger failed after 7 months
Update—I'm dropping my rating from 5 stars to 4. The HAs continue to work well, but the charger has been a continuing problem. The magnetic connections are very finicky. They got worse over time until the right side would not charge at all. This is very disappointing because I really like them otherwise. I contacted Sony, and they sent me a new set of HAs with a new charger. Great Customer support! Original review: I have had prescription HAs for 4 years, Costco Signature brand, and Phonak Lyric. I have moderate hearing loss. If you don't know Lyric, it's a great but pricey subscription-based invisible-in-the-canal hearing aid. My $4k (ouch) annual Lyric subscription was coming up for renewal, so I thought I would shop around a bit before re-upping. FYI, I have no complaints with my audiologist. They have been terrific. I wanted anonther in the ear canal solution and landed on Sony's new OTC C20. I am 3 weeks in and so far so good. Is it as good as the Lyric? Probably not, but for 25% of the cost it's darn good and more comfortable for me so far. In 3 years with Lyric I could not get to the point where I could consistantly leave them in for the entire 6-8 weeks as they recommend. I was constantly removing one of them because of some ear fatigue/aching. I assume that someone who tolerates them better would stay with them, especially if price were no object. In terms of comparison. Price - Sony. Sound quality - Sony. Both are good with voice, but Sony has the edge with music primarly because you can adjust the sound for music. Lyric is not adjustable. Doesn't have an app. Durability - Lyric (Only because you get new ones every two months and I don't know how durable the Sonys are yet) Battery Life - Lyric (up to 2 months) Hidden - Lyric (Can't see them) Comfort—It's hard to compare since Lyric is designed to stay in all the time and is mostly comfortable. With the Sonys, I am aware of them, but not in an uncomfortable way. They also need to be pushed back in periodically. We're still testing various dome sizes. Fit—Lyric. They are not a mold, but they offer more size options, so they can be more custom-fitted than the Sonys. Again, you have an audiologist helping you fit them, whereas, with the Sonys, you are on your own. Noise when chewing or hearing your own voice when you talk—Lyric. There is some noise while chewing with the Sonys, but you get used to it. Maintainance and Support—Lyric. The audiologist fully supports Lyric. You see them in person whenever you need replacements or adjustments at no additional cost. My particular audiologist includes an annual hearing test. Bottom line—For the price, the Sonys are definitely worth a try. They work for me because I have spent several years working with audiologists on other HAs and have a broad understanding of how they are fitted and what to expect. I think someone trying HAs for the first time should first see an audiologist, even if they intend to go OTC. ... show more

  • Works Well But the Charger is So Awkward It Ruins the value of the Set
The hearing aids seem to work well. My biggest complaint is with the charger. I have a very hard time getting the aids to register that they are charging. I put the aid on the cradle, it looks to me like the contacts connect, but the charge light doesn't come on. I juggle the aid a little, and it comes on. Or not. Or comes on and then turns off a few seconds later. While the aids work, the nightly anxiety about whether they're charging correctly is frustrating. I have now has a lot more experience with the hearing aids and charger, I have a higher estimation of the hearing aids, but I'm much more frustrated with charging. I have to get the aid exactly, precisely, in the cradle or nothing happens. You'd think popping it in the cradle and hearing the magnetic "click" would mean you're good to go charging. But oh no, I hear the click, the aid is in place, and nothing happens. Honestly if I'd known the charging was so frizzy I would not have bought this set. The longer I use these hearing aids, the less I like them. Plus, the app is absolutely infuriating. It has stopped "letting" me log in, so now I can't control or adjust my hearing aids, Sony evidently attached my e-mail address to someone else;s account and now I can't log in. I have tried to create a new account, with failure. I've am SO SORRY I BOUGHT this hearing aid. The sound is tinny, the app is horrible and doesn't really allow solid control, and the account process is awful. I feel like I just flushed $1000 down the toilet. I will NEVER buy another Sony hearing product. ... show more

  • They Solved My Problem
Wow! These things really work! I've been through a number of OTC hearing aid options over the last few years. I started cheap with the MDhearing ones...around $250. They had marginal sound quality, were hard to adjust and required regular battery changes. Consequently I only used them only when I absolutely had to. Next I tried eargo...about $1500. These were much better: rechargable, small and in the ear, easier to adjust and much better sound quality. They were pretty high maintenance requiring cleaning after every use and still they would stop working because of dirt somewhere. The sound was good but the speech clarity was pretty sketchy. One stopped working all together after about 2 years. Worst complaint was that they were not very comfortable. I could bear them for a few hours but that was it. Finally, I decided to give these Sony cre-c20s a shot. Around $1000. Well, they are not perfect but they are much better than the other two I've tried. They have good sound quality and very good speech clarity. They fit in my ear way better than any other brand because they are oval rather than round and slip into the ear canal much better. They have a feature that allows for custom adjustment of the low-mid-high pitch amplification which worked really well. I have been wearing these all day, 16 to 18 hours, and they are very comfortable. I'm sold! Now, obviously, I cant yet report on their durability but they do come with a 1 year warranty with longer warranty coverage available. So, I'm keeping these and enjoying, for the first time in many years, hearing clearly the world around me! ... show more
