  • DO NOT BUY! These drives are GARBAGE -- bad/reallocated sectors and poor health!
I initially bought two of these 6TB drives. One was fine -- no complaints. (UPDATE 8/12/2021: The first drive I bought ended up dying after a week of actual usage. The SMART tests and other diagnostics were 100% fine initially, then as soon as I started to actually use the drive it completely died and I lost data. HORRIBLE, GARBAGE DRIVES! DON'T BUY THESE!) This only earns one star, I would give zero stars if I could. After plugging the second drive in for the first time and powering up, my drive monitoring software (Acronis Drive Monitor) popped up with a disk health warning on the 2nd drive -- bad/reallocated sectors. Drive health 80%. Warnings to immediately back up my data because the drive is showing signs of early failure. Yet I could clearly see this appeared to be a brand new drive, power on hours was zero, everything seemed okay other than the bad/reallocated sectors. Since this hard drive was going into my NAS and I didn't want to risk the drive dying at an inopportune moment, I heeded the warnings and decided to get it replaced through Amazon's returns. After all, the listing says "Product *works* [emphasis mine] and looks like new. Backed by the 90-day Amazon Renewed Guarantee. This pre-owned product has been *professionally inspected, tested* [emphasis mine] and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers." Well, this drive certainly looks like new appearance-wise, but doesn't work like new! It already has signs of imminent failure out of the box -- either it's defective, or it's an old and busted drive that was poorly or improperly refurbished. Next, Amazon initially put me through the wringer asking me to get a warranty claim number from Seagate (the drive's OEM). So I had to get on the line with Seagate technical support who asked me to use their SeaTool software to run a bunch of tests on the drive which confirmed that indeed it had bad/reallocated sectors. With a case number in hand, I was able to get Amazon to replace the drive. The replacement arrived in a few days. So I plugged the replacement in... and found the exact same problem. I was sent a different drive with the same specs and a different serial number, seemingly in good visual condition and in a fresh anti-static bag, but just like the previous drive it had bad/reallocated sectors indicating imminent premature failure. This time, frustrated with having to go through Amazon, I decided to start a warranty RMA claim with the seller using the contact information provided on the 3-year warranty card in the package containing the drive. They happily acknowledged my claim within around 5 hours, shipped out a drive the next day, and I received it today (three days later) via USPS Priority Mail. When I made the RMA claim I specifically mentioned my hardships with the previous drive, and mentioned I was really hoping that this drive would be better and not have any bad/reallocated sectors since I really needed to be able to rely on this drive not showing clear signs that it would die on me prematurely (within reason, obviously, given that these are "refurbished" and sold at a discount). Lo and behold, I plugged in this drive and immediately Acronis Drive Monitor starts flashing even more serious alarms at me. This replacement drive was at imminent risk of failure and was in far worse condition than even the two previous drives -- 30% disk health overall. Tons of bad/reallocated sectors. Not even usable for unimportant data, just total junk. Completely ridiculous and unacceptable. Did they even test these drives before sending them out? I emailed the warranty department again and told them about my experience, showing them the results of my SMART diagnostics, and while they offered a profuse apology and a refund, speculating that maybe the drive got damaged in transit, this whole ordeal was a colossal waste of time and energy. The fact is, the likelihood that this drive or any of the previous ones got damaged in transit is pretty low. I've literally never had this problem before, being a purchaser of dozens of drives. Rather, it's much more likely that these drives are simply low quality garbage and/or failed drives which are being pawned off as "professionally refurbished" by resetting their SMART data (like turning back the odometer on a car). I might have just got lucky with the first drive that turned out okay, the rest immediately showing signs of being old busted junk by throwing errors when they're first powered up. Don't buy these drives. The price is attractive but it's not worth your time or the risk that they will fail on you unexpectedly. Spend the extra $70 or so and get a new drive from a better seller. ... show more

  • Seems fine
Seems to be working fine. For storage, you can't really go wrong with one of these old style drives. Can't compete with the speeds of an SSD, but this is just a beast when it comes to backups and storage. No problems with it so far.

  • Had 2 drives with bad sectors that verifying surface fixed
These drives should not need full formats from arrival seller is lazy and for that 3 stars. Drives do work fine though. Updated 8/16/2021 So far 2 drives with bad sectors repaired by doing 0 writes. Out of 12 drives total. Updated review to 4 stars.

  • 22 bad sectors out of the box
Drive is running and the bad sector count seems to be stable, for now. I don’t expect perfection with a refurb drive but 22 bad sectors sees a tad excessive.
