  • As durable as one could hope
Color: Black
I carry my umbrella with me everyday in my backpack (you never know when you'll need it in Chicago and I used to travel extensively for work). With all the crazy downtown winds (the tall buildings act like wind tunnels), the only time I put away the umbrella is when the wind is blowing very hard and constantly swirling that an umbrella does absolutely nothing to keep you dry (It's not unusual for swirling rain in Chicago to actually come up at you during the worst storms). In short - it easily survived in winds where an umbrella still serves a purpose. I did have a slight problem with bending the shaft which resulted in the umbrella requiring a bit of force to open and close. I was able to carefully bend it back so it isn't as smooth as it could be but still very usable. I don't count this against the umbrella - it's been horribly abused for over a decade now! I'm finally replacing it because the material for the canopy is wearing out (thinning material but no hole yet) from repeatedly taking the umbrella out of my bag. It's not so bad that I couldn't use it for about 3-5 years but figured it's more than paid for itself having travelled over 100,000 miles and used in dozens of cities around the world. I also own the 62" doorman gustbuster which is just as old but is in perfect condition (other than the tip from using it as a walking stick when the rain dies down). I'd say there is a clear difference in craftsmanship (the larger umbrella being better built), but I have yet to come across another umbrella that makes a great compromise between size, usability, craftsmanship, and price. ... show more

  • Strong, small, convenient
Although infrequent, rain storms in the southwestern U.S. deserts can be quite spectacular in their violence. I needed an umbrella that would handle these sudden downpours, and this product, the GustBuster Metro, meets that need. At only 43 inches (109 cm) across this umbrella is fairly small. If I had tested umbrellas in a store first I would likely have bought a larger one. This one is good for just a single person, and seems just barely adequate for that. I like the color, a deep green (the manufacturer calls it Hunter). Black or navy blue would have been O.K., too. This umbrella has velcro straps integrated into it, so you can wrap it tightly when it is collapsed. In addition, it includes a nice nylon slip sleeve with an adjustable shoulder cord so you can put it away when you're done, or carry it conveniently until the rain starts. From my limited experience using this product (just one rain storm so far...) it seems to be a great product. I'm glad I paid a little extra for a solid product. ... show more

  • Gustbuster Umbrella is the Best!
Color: Black
This is the best umbrella ever! This was my second purchase of a GustBuster Metro umbrella. Purchased in 2011, and still use it to this day! Does not buckle, fold, and in 55 mph plus winds and rain, this withstands the test of time. I still have my first one too, purchased on a vendor site 10 years ago. I bought this second one so I always have one at home, one for commuting. I had tried different umbrellas and decided to spend a little more to invest in an umbrella that actually works, and happy I did! Worth every penny! ... show more

  • Bust the gust
Let me start by defining the criteria I am using to evaluate this umbrella: Wind resistance, water resistance, quality of construction, coverage and portability. Each category will be rated out of 5 stars and my final rating will just be an average of the other scores. Wind resistance: 5/5 The product description claims this umbrella will not break even when subjected to winds up to 55 mph. So far I have only used it in conditions of up to 20 mph wind, and it has worked beautifully. Previous umbrellas have inverted at the mere mention of wind, while this one is hardly yanked around in 20 mph wind. Doesn’t invert, doesn’t hit me in the face at the slightest breeze, 5 stars. Water resistance: 4/5 Of course an umbrella should stop water from dripping on the user, and this one does, but the material itself is not entirely waterproof. It must be unfolded to dry out after use in order to avoid mold, which is typical of all umbrellas I have owned. It would be great to see a totally waterproof umbrella, but simply water resistant is all I expected, 4 stars. Quality of construction: 5/5 Following 10 months of regular use, extending and retracting the umbrella is just as easy as day 1. On one occasion, when it was folded, I accidentally bent one of the spines about six inches from the handle and it just snapped right back into place. The spines are made of steel instead of aluminum, making them much more durable, 5 stars. Coverage: 2/5 This is advertised as a 43” umbrella, but that is the arc length over the top of the umbrella, while the actual unfolded diameter is only 36”. I was counting on it being 43” wide so it would cover both me and my backpack, but this figure is mildly deceptive, 2 stars. Portability: 5/5 When it’s retracted, this umbrella is about 15.5” long and 3.5” wide (at the widest point). It fits fine into a backpack and matches the dimensions of most similarly-sized umbrellas, 5 stars. Overall I am pretty satisfied with this umbrella, and these ratings average to 4.2 stars. I was looking for an umbrella that wouldn’t invert or hit me in the face whenever there was a slight breeze, and I got exactly what I wanted. Anyone who doesn’t like being rained on would benefit from this product. ... show more
