This review is our initial impression of the ClipperCreek 40 Amps, Level 2, 240 Volts, HCS-50 EV Charger Hardwired. We recently completed major electrification of our house as part of the upgrade, including installing a charger for our 2021 VW ID4. We were perfectly okay with using a 110-volt house current most of the time, but we sometimes had to do two or three charging sessions to top off the vehicle to an 80% charge level depending on vehicle usage. This was an issue when, as any EV owner will tell you, batteries don’t like cold. Also, in the use case was in using the vehicle for road trips and doing a charge to 100% takes a very long time on standard house current, and sitting at the high-speed charger for 30 minutes gets boring after the first ten or so times you do it (if you can find one that works). So why the ClipperCreek: 1. Supplied exactly the suitable current required for our ID4 2. Came in either a plugin or hardwired version 3. Indoor or outdoor usage (the electrician greatly appreciated the armored conduit hardwire) 4. Simple, simple, simple a. No app needed b. No Bluetooth or WIFI c. Install by an electrician took all of 15 minutes d. It is a straightforward interface - plug it into the vehicle with green lights and charges. Cons: 1. Not an intelligent unit – no apps, no talking to it, or wireless connectivity – can’t automatically take advantage of reduced electrical rates, if available 2. It might not be the prettiest unit 3. Cable does get stiff when it gets cold It is highly recommended if looking for what appears to be a bulletproof solution for charging your EV.

Charger was fairly easy to install, only issue was the plug-in pigtail is very short and totally inflexible. I had to mount it directly above the outlet and line up the plug while installing it to ensure I could plug it in without having to bend or twist the pigtail. If I did it again, I would get the hard-wired version. We bought the plug-in since we thought we would be moving the charger between two houses, but it's really not designed to be moved on a regular basis. This thing charges fast. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

I did not use this unit....My electrician told me it would be better for us to use a direct hookup instead of a plug in unit outside ....When I get my garage ready for a charger , this plug in will be the ticket......

This is a sold very sturdy and professional looking unit. It’s higher priced and doesn’t have any gimmicky bells or whistles but it is 100% worth it’s price. We bought the 50 model (hardwired) and it gives us 30 miles of range per hour. You can go from zero to full charge every night while you sleep if need be. Can’t imagine needing anything more.

The installation was done by an electrical contractor at a reasonable rate. I received 2 incentive payments from our local utility, SMUD. One for the purchase of the charger and a second for the work to install it.

I'll up date the review pending resolution but QA is obviously suspect at this point. Proper installation verified, unit is just not operable (will not pass self check) Update: Tech support confirms faulty unit - Easy RMA and will be shipping a new unit. This is fantastic - leaving 3 stars for the hassle. With a unit like this DOA units should not happen. FWIW I have another of the same model that's been bullet proof for years.
