  • Nice looking Charger with option to charge with NACS and J1772
This EV charger is well made and if you have a Tesla, it makes sense to get a Tesla Charger. You will find some no-name brand charges for a bit cheaper but it's not worth the risk. I was on the fence on getting this charger (Universal Wall Connector) versus the Tesla Wall Connector (only NACS plug) for $120 less. This does the same thing the Tesla Wall Connector does but comes with a built-in NACS to J1772 adapter that is securely locked to the charger. If you don't care for the J1772 adapter, you can save some money by opting for the Tesla Wall Connector. Then if you need to charge a EV with a J1772 in the future, you can also purchase an adapter. For me, it was worth the extra $120 for this charger because I am getting a high quality NACS to J1772 adapter that is built into the charger. The adapter does locks into the charger when not in use and also locks into the NACS plug if charging with this adapter. Installation: Consult with an license electrical before installation. I opted to go with 6-AWG THHN copper wires and a 60-amp breaker for my install. If you use Romex, you may have to go with 4-AWG wires. Only three wires are required for the install (2 hots and a ground wire - no neutral wire needed). 6-AWG is the minimum size wire that Tesla recommends if you plan to charge at the 48A max output. The location of the Universal Wall Connecter is only a couple feet from my breaker panel. I purchase 6 ft of wires and use 3/4" flexible conduct. The mounting box has a pre-drilled top and bottom knockouts made for 3/4 conducts. If you go with a larger size conduit, you will have to drill a larger opening on mounting box. There are also some pre-marked holes to drill in the back of the mounting box if you prefer to have the wires come out from the wall. Usage: The charger works well. My Model 3 is set to charge at 32A and it charged from 20% to 80% in about 4.5 hours. The cable is long enough that it can reach from the front wall of my garage to outside (where my Model 3 is parked in the driveway). The charger allows setting the breaker size which will set the max amp charging output. I set it to 60-amp breaker, which will charge at a max of 48A. Your car should be able to control the output of the charge. If not, you can set it to a smaller breaker size and it will drop the charging output lower. Currently, there is no easy way to do this. You have to put the charger in commission mode and then connect to the charger's Wi-Fi and navigate to the charger's IP address. Only then can you change the output amperage on the charger. But this is not something an average user would need to do so Tesla may of made it inconvenient for this reason. ... show more

  • Does not work on 4xe vehicles
Save yourself hours of time on the phone with Tesla support where they can’t figure out the issue, push firmware updates, tell you to power cycle, and then blow on it like an old nintendo game (Ok, I made that last one up). Seriously, though, it doesn’t work. Previous models had dip switches that would work, but this one doesn’t. Huge headache and a waste of money and time ... show more

  • Worthless Tesla product, adapter issues
The product worked great for one use and then the nacas (Tesla) connector wouldn’t unlatch from the wall port. Every time I detach from The wall port I would get the tesla charger with the j1772 adapter. There was no way to detach the j1772 adapter. The first time it ever worked it wouldn’t open up the charging port on the car with the click of the button on the charging wand. Tesla mentioned they would do a software upgrade to fix the issue but apparently it hasn’t worked yet. I’d be refunding this poorly developed product for the gen 3. Tesla support has been anything but useful. They couldn’t even understand the problem. ... show more

  • Tesla charger works great, but not the J1772
The media could not be loaded. I installed this recently. But have been having issues to get the J1772 adapter to work with my Chrysler Pacifica Plugin Hybrid. I tried on a neighbors tesla and it works fine. However when using the J1772 it does not charge the minivan. I liked this unit as it has the capability to charge both types with one single unit, but as of now it does not work. I downloaded the Tesla Pro App, changed the compability mode and breaker size - still nothing. Hopefully I can have it resolved soon. ... show more

  • Tesla reached out after poor review and provided support
Caveat!: J1172 is stuck to Tesla handle, can’t get it to release Tesla handle with J1772 attached will not latch in connector port(falls out, seems latch is not engaging) When i first received unit J1772 adapter was stuck in wall connector port..could not get it to release even when pressing latch release hard..now opposite problem.. The above mentioned problem is now rectified..my advice is to no connect/disconnect the Tesla handle/adapter from wall unit when you first receive it unless it is powered up.For some reason this created the problem. After being powered up and used for first time for J 1772 vehicle the charger/adapter now engages properly. ... show more

  • Best L2 Charger on the market.
This is my first and hopefully last L2 EV Charger I'll ever have to get. There are some U TooB vids out there, especially the one from State of Charge that talks about the operating range and resiliency testing that I won't get into there but worth a watch. First, let's talk about the size of this sucker. I would say this charger can be made slimmer if they wanted too but this size is perfect. I consulted an electrician and there's ample room to work in. Installation: Also consulting an electrician, the run I have is really short about 3ft on a new build so a slight smaller gauge was fine as this charger will see action at most 4 hours during the day. (It's weird, here in socal, super low rates is from 8a-4p, which works out fine if you're a remote worker). I did not like the 2 mounting screws that came with the unit. The heads were easy to strip, luckily I had some #8 3" general purpose screws on hand that were much easier to work with. The unit is not going anywhere. Set-Up: Running Ubiquiti's Unifi 6, my unit is still offline but I was able to pair and register during moments of internet connectivity. Depending on your preference, maybe having some things offline isn't a bad idea. My Model X is already connected to the wifi and can download updates accordingly. Performance: For some odd reason, service to my home is only 208V, not 240. So first world problems, I'll have to live with 9.4kW performance, which isn't bad because I can go from 20-80 before my shift is over. Overall, I would highly recommend this product, especially for homeowners. This is a great way to future proof your investment. Also, go with 4ga wire so if you need to replace this for a 100amp evse, you'll be set. ... show more
