This umbrella has turned out to be a great purchase. It is sturdy and well built. Purchased 3 years ago, it has been outside the whole time (3 years), and it still functions as good as it did when it was new. We have the umbrella sitting in a 50 pound, cast iron, free standing umbrella base (also purchased on Amazon). We keep the umbrella open throughout the summer, and closed (but outside) in the winter. During periods of heavy winds we do try to close it, but we have missed a few times and amazingly it is still intact. We are pretty surprised at how well it has held up. It has ties to keep it closed when you do close it. You definitely need to tie those, as keeping it down but untied is probably the most likely thing to lead to premature failure. 2017 update: It finally broke during a heavy windstorm 3-4 years after purchase. I think we got too cavalier about not taking it down during storms. I'm not removing any stars, because it was still a great umbrella for a long time, and I don't think it's fair to expect a product like this to survive heavy winds. This is a nice umbrella; mechanism works well. However, I think it's poorly designed to handle any kind of wind. I have it on my patio, which is fairly protected, in a weighted stand. Any kind of wind causes it to lift and fall over - one time landing over the 6' tall fence in my neighbor's backyard. Doesn't need to be a heavy wind at all - the venting at the top of the umbrella is just lame. Do not recommend. ... show more

    • Don't get me wrong, I like the umbrella

Pros: Umbrella fabric is top quality, the pole and crank arm are acceptable Cons: The pulley cord is sub par. Broke after a month of very limited use (7 - 9 times). From the outside it looked okay but after it snapped it was obvious as to why. It is a tiny strand of extruded plastic with a woven sheath around it. I replaced it with some 550 para cord and everything works as it should. It's too bad they had to sacrifice the quality of the whole umbrella to save a few cents on some cord. For the money I really expected better, especially since it's made in the USA. Tip: When restringing make sure to leave about 12 inches extra. This gives the cord a better grip on the crank arm. Conclusion: It is a great umbrella if you have some real 550 para cord and don't mind restringing when the cord breaks. ... show more

I just received and put up this umbrella, and I am quite disappointed. First, the two halves are not joined tightly. There is a bit of play where the two poles meet each other. In slight wind, the upper half is rocking. Second, the umbrella size is misleading. It says 7.5'. There is no way. When fully opened, it is more like 6' wide. This is short of the area that I need to cover. So, buyers beware. Otherwise, the ribs and fabric are nice. However, it is not better than the two other cheap umbrellas that I also have. The crank case is still plastic. At this price point, I'd say not worth it. ... show more
