  • Lool and Work Great!
Size: 55"W x 31"D Style: PN Series Color: Clear / White Brackets
My friend from Scandinavia suggested that I put plastic awnings over my doors. I rejected the idea because I thought the treatment would look treat. Was I wrong! This started with me building egress stairs on the side of the house because the only access I had to the basement was via interior stairs. My contractor suggested an awning over the stairway. I found clear plexiglass awnings that fit over the stairs. Then, somebody suggested I get the same over the exterior doors, which I again rejected because I thought it would look cheap. I was finally convinced that the awnings would be some protection against the elements. The photos show how all the awnings look. Honestly, the awnings are subtle, and you really don't notice them when you look at the house. They disappear into the architecture. The only issue that I have is the pollen on the egress stairs awning. A window washer sponge on a pole should take care of that. The smaller awnings are cleaned every time it rains or snows. I am so happy that I did this. I love the look. The canopies are well built and look great. It pays to be open minded. I recommend. ... show more

  • Installation
Size: 79"W x 35"D Style: PA Series Color: Clear / Silver Brackets
Love the product and look. The challenge is installation. I purchased the 79” wide version. 2 tips: During assembly: (1) when installing the front and back railing onto the rubber gasket, start at one end and work down the rail tapping with a rubber gasket. Don’t use any lubricants to make it easier to slide on. (2) using the cardboard the awning came in after assembly, I made a cardboard template to exact measurements of the installation side of the awing by laying the cardboard on the floor and setting the awning down as it would be on the wall. Outlined the brackets and holes and length of it. Cut out the bolt holes and used the template which turned out as a 79” rectangle, and used it to mark the holes on the wall for installation. It worked perfectly, so I only had to set the awning once. Use of Ladders, lifting up and down, manipulation to install is a challenge for one person. I tried a ladder on each side with the help of my son. Just too awkward to achieve. If installed over steps like mine, I think it would take 3 ladders of 2 different kinds, and 3 people. Gave it a lot of thought and ended up renting a drywall lift (see picture). It worked beautiful. The cost was 29$ for 4 hours or 50$ per day. They come in different lift sizes , got the smallest with a lift of 11 ft. Once raised to the level of installation I had about 12” to slide forward and install. I think hiring handy persons to install would cost a lot more. I’m in my 70’s so that tells you something about the ease of it. Good luck, ... show more

  • Worth the trouble
Size: 47"W x 35"D Style: PA Series Color: Clear / Silver Brackets
This is a well-designed and solidly constructed product. What drew us to this one is the way that the awning is connected to its supporting brackets. On many others (typically less expensive ones), the brackets are on the edges of the awning, which is held in place by the inward compression exerted by the brackets. On this one, however, the brackets sit under the awning and are attached to it by 6 bolts. There is thus no danger of the awning falling, slipping, being blown out of the brackets. The assembly was simple and straightforward (with one exception, to be mentioned below), if time-consuming. The installation of the assembled awning-and-bracket combination was another matter. Part of our difficulty, I admit, was due to us: I am 82, my wife is 71, so we are not the ideal pair to be doing this sort of work. Another part was due to some peculiar features of our project: there is a greenhouse on one side of the door, and a large Wisteria bush on the other, so there was no way to offset the ladders to the outside of the doorway. And, yes, two ladders (and two installers) are required for this project, as the instructions make perfectly clear. Since we were mounting the awning into the siding directly above our door, and were not confident that there were structural members behind the siding where the brackets would be screwed in, we decided to mount a pair of 2x4s above the lintel. We screwed the 2x4s into the studs, and then attached the brackets to the 2x4s. (Naturally, the mounting holes for the brackets did not themselves align with the studs.) To keep the mounting brackets perpendicular to the ground, we attached reversed pieces of siding first, before screwing in the 2x4s. You can see all of this very clearly in one of the attached photos. There are some odd lapses in the Owner's Manual. Although for the most part the assembly instructions are very clear, they do not stress that one must be very careful about the orientation of the awning bar relative to the awning sheet. There are two ways it can be done, and only one of the is correct. If you do it wrong, it is exceedingly difficult to separate the bar (with its rubber strip) from the sheet. (They are obviously not meant to be pried apart once connected). When it comes to the installation, you are told to "make sure to use the appropriate sized drill bit for the mounting screws," but you are not told what that size is. Fortunately, a call to Advaning yielded the answer: 15/64". (Thanks to Jesse, at Advaning, who was very helpful.) Another peculiarity is the odd mix of metric and SAE hardware provided. The lag screws that attach the brackets to the wall are metric (13mm), but the bolts that secure the awning to the brackets are SAE (1/2"). Not a serious problem, since the well-equipped DIYer will surely have both kinds of tools. Or, you might even do the whole job with an adjustable wrench. (Interesting sidelight: the installation video, when displaying the tools you'll need, shows a Crescent wrench, but then the installers in the video are shown using a socket wrench (with an extension). I definitely recommend the socket wrench -- it takes many, many, turns of the wrench to drive the lag screws all the way in -- and you'll need the extension for the upper lag screws in order to clear the acorn nut that secures the awning to the bracket. So, putting this in was quite a workout, but we think the results were worth it. This is an unobtrusive but attractive awning, and it appears that it will last a good long time. ... show more

  • Great value for the price.
Size: 47"W x 31"D Style: PN Series Color: Clear / White Brackets
Requires custom fabricated mounting plates if installing over vinyl siding. See photos. I would buy the PN model next time since they have stronger (aluminum) brackets and are more apt to survive the heavier Northern snow loads. Satisfied overall.
