I bought this because I wanted a non chemical dye to even out my hair color. My hair is extremely damaged from being platinum blonde. I am going to write this long review because I wish I would’ve known exactly what I was getting myself into when I bought it! If you are going to use this, you need to clear the next 48 hours of your schedule. (I did mine on the weekend) It comes with two packages of powder. First package you mix with brewed coffee and it has to sit for 8-10 hours. I mixed mine at 10pm and woke up and used it at 8. I recommend using a brush to apply it. Brush from root to tip and try to keep it down and straight it’ll be way more even. These powders are not messy and stain like how I thought they would. They wipe very easily with water, even after they dry. Keep on for 3 hours and rinse with cold water until it runs clear. Then wash with shampoo. After it’s clean you have to dry your hair in order to use the second package. Mix the second package with just water and let it set for 30 minutes then apply the same way. You leave this one on for 3 hours as well. VERY IMPORTANT: Brush on and leave hair down! I did not do this and piled my hair on top of my head and when it dried, it was very hard like cement and felt like wool. It literally scared me to death. I thought my hair was going to completely break off. It took forever for me to get it soft enough to rinse out completely using a ton of conditioner! BUT once I did, my hair was absolutely perfect. It smelled like alfalfa hay, But the color was gorgeous and my hair felt extremely healthy! Not one hair fell out or broke off which is very rare for me. I’m not sure if I’d do it again because it took SO long and I only needed it to even out my hair color because I’m going back to my natural hair color (which is natural black). Aside from how long it all takes, I do recommend this product because it does do what is says and there are only 4 natural ingredients and if you are like me, I like to using natural products like this. One more thing I want to add in case someone experiences this, I did post a question about this product which hasn’t been answered yet but, I’m nearly positive that I had a small reaction to it. The day I dyed my hair and the following night, my hands burned on and off and any time I touched water. There was NOTHING visible, however my hands felt similar to like if I had burned them with cooking grease or something. The next day, 100% gone. It was really strange and I guess there’s a possibility it wasn’t even the dye? I don’t know, I’m waiting to see if my question gets answered by someone who might have had a similar experience. ... show more

I am beyond thrilled with the results of using this henna. This was my fist experience using henna to color my hair. I have used it prior for body art. I had many questions that were promptly answered by the seller. This is definitely an undertaking - however, I feel it was well worth it. I know other reviews mentioned the smell. I think it smells like the loose tea I drink - so, I was not bothered by that at all. I made sure I had all the proper tools - ie: cape, gloves, mixing bowl, dye brush and plastic cap. I got all of these things from Amazon for less than $20. The biggest pain was in the application. It is basically like putting thick mud on you hair. The paste thickens and is hard to work into your hair once its on you head for a few minutes. It took some time and effort to get it all on evenly. It would definitely be a HUGE bonus to have someone apply it for you. However, I did manage. I did it close to bedtime and fell asleep with it on my hair. So it was on from 8:00 pm until 4:00 am. Washing out all the dried henna took awhile and it did leave my hair dry & gritty. I slathered on my WEN conditioning cleanser, put another cap on & went back to sleep for a few hours. I got up & rinsed it out and my hair was much softer. The color is a beautiful radiant red. My blonde highlights did come out a brighter orange red - so I am interested to see how they develop over the next few days. It actually gives my hair that tone on tone look. I'm glad I chose this particular brand over the regular boxed henna - because you have to mix that the night before and let it "rest" overnight. I will definitely be using this henna from now on. The color is perfect. There is more work involved - but in the end I happy. The normal hair dyes gave me migraines from the ammonia and wreaked havoc on my hair. I might try and add a little olive oil to my paste next time. I see that others have done this with the regular boxed henna. It definitely helps to do do your research and read the reviews before trying this for the first time. It does help to have some insight of what you need to make the job easier and what to expect throughout the process. I felt very confident going into this process. *** UPDATE: It has been a week now and every time I wash my hair the color bleeds out. A lot. Be sure to have an old towel that you can use continually. I do not use a sulfate shampoo. I use a cleansing conditioner. My hair has also faded quote a bit :( I am going to reapply this again this weekend and see if the color stays on better with a 2nd application. MAKE SURE TO USE GLOVES AT ALL TIMES. I was hopeful to transition from dark brown box dye to a more natural product. But I was sadly disappointed. I felt like I was poisoned when using the henna. Nauseated, lightheaded, and lethargic. I had to leave it on my head for three hours feeling this way. The next day I used the Indigo for another three hours. This did not make me feel ill, but it barely toned down the extreme bright red I had on my roots. My hair is naturally light gray, so the color was intense. I wasn’t about to repeat this futile exercise again. So I started to research removing henna and Indigo from the hair. It’s almost impossible. Unlike box dye where you can use “color oops” and loosen the bond with the hair, henna bonds with the cuticle. Sally Beauty aesthetician recommended I use vodka to break the bond of the henna and Indigo from the hair shaft. This did help a little bit but I still have the bright red roots. You can also have a reaction if you try to use another box dye over the henna and it can break off your hair or turn it green so I decided I wanted it out of my hair as much as possible I then tried equal parts of baking soda, 20 developer and dandruff shampoo because I needed to remove a semi permanent hair color anyway. A licensed cosmologist recommended this. This greatly lightened my hair but barely touched the henna roots. I then used an oil treatment which is supposed to be the a gentle way to loosen the bond of the henna to the hair shaft. I mixed coconut oil and a heavy caster oil and wrap it in plastic and heat often on for a few hours. I’ve been added glycerin, which comes from oil and lime juice for the citric acid to lighten it overall. This all helped, but I still had fairly bright red roots. I did a patch test with “Color Fix” to make sure it would not break my hair at the roots where the henna was. Some reported it had hurt turn their hair green. The strand test didn’t seem to hurt my hair, so I proceeded to use it all over my head. Repeated. Faded my hair but still orange roots. I then patch tested bleaching a strand of hair along with the bright orange root. It didn’t turn green or break off so I proceeded to bleach my whole head, except for one inch at root. The last 15 minutes I worked the bleach into the roots as well. All the box died came out, but I still had light orange roots. I used a light ash blonde toner with red orange corrector drops added and 20 volume developer. This makes my hair silver and ash blonde but the roots are still a toned down warm color. I’ll continue to use the hot oil treatment on the roots every few days to see if I can remove it. This whole thing has literally taken days of my life to try to correct. So I've been buying this for a few years now and i gotta say i am still not good at it! I have dark brown hair... It covers the grey for about two to three weeks but i think it's because my hair is growing faster. My hair seems more manageable and when it's fresh with henna the color is multi layered and shiny. But it fades to redder color fast despite using no phosphate shampoo and apple cider vinegar in a light conditioner. I've tried one step and two step process and even though two step looks nicer i still keep a weird bit of red orange color to my grey roots underneath that looks weird if i pull my hair up high in a ponytail. Soo much better than chemical haircolor for my dry hair and the environment but i wish someone was there to give advice. I tried once and never got a response so i troll the you tube videos and google two step henna everytime i get ready to apply in the hopes i will find the answers. ... show more

First off the application process is simply just too long. You Sit for hours with the stuff on ur head and I had to continue the process through the next day cause u have to do it twice and it just wasn't practical. Then when I put the dark brown henna (which i had to add conditioner too cause there was not enough for my hair) on my head after about 30 mins it gave me HORRIBLE pain on my head. The most awful pain i have ever experienced on my head almost like I had really really tight heavy braids. Anyways that made me cut the last step by like half the time cause i couldnt take it. In the end I noticed slight color difference and my greys are blonde. i personally wouldn't go through that again and wouldnt recommend... ... show more

I am a 63 yr old Black woman and I use Henna to enhance my original color and as a protein treatment. I am about 30%+ gray and really not hiding the gray but more to help the remaining color look vibrant and not lost. Have tried many Henna brands and so far this one is the best. I bought the Dark Brown. 1 - Mixes easy and the wait time to activate the Henna is 30 mins for the color henna. There is a packet of plain Henna included and it must stand for 8-10 hrs to activate. 2 - After applying , I use plastic wrap and top with a plastic cap. Keeps the henna in place and moist for easier wash out. Henna required to stay on for 3 hrs. 3 - Wash out was easier than expected, rinsed with cool water and didn't fell like I had remaining grit. My hair has tendency to get dry using henna so I followed up with a Co Wash conditioner. Saturated my head and then rinsed again. Hair was soft and felt wonderful, no girt or residue feeling. I air dry my hair and then followed up with a coconut based oil on my scalp. I followed the enclosed instructions and added my tweaks based on my experiences with Henna. Color is really intense but not too false looking. I'll monitor the fading and decide if I want to mix a Mahogany with the Dk Brn to get the color closer to my original, which has always had red highlights. *For those looking for gray coverage, this Henna covered more than I expected. Other Henna's stained or color some of my gray with a red tint. This henna 'covered' and minimized my grays. I still see some but it has a nice effect. My hair style is a pixie cut, based on my length expect that the package will last for a minimum of 3-4 uses. I had mix left over and had to throw it out. Overall very pleased with the results. I'll follow up with comments on color retention after a couple of washes. ... show more

I was a little nervous to try henna but I read a lot of reviews saying it made your hair shiny and healthier and I was hoping I'd see those results for my hair. This is a two step process and takes quite a long time. But it's well worth it and I'll never go back to chemical hair dye. I ordered the dark brown. There is definitely red in it but I actually like the end result. It was quite red at first and I was a little nervous. But after a few days the red toned down. I mixed the henna (step 1) with coconut oil and warm black tea. When I rinsed this step out after 4 hours I was shocked to see a bright oranges red color. (Think orphan Annie!!) I moved on to the second step hoping the brown would cover the oranges red color. Mixed that with warm black tea also. Rinsed as much as I could out with plain water then scrubbed with conditioner (yes conditioner) to make sure I got it all. Anyway, I love the softness and shine it's added to my hair!!! I was Excited to try henna dye dark brown! My hair is light brown, and it takes pretty much anything easily, no grays. I cant Give the product a 1 star because I did Not use the 2 step method, so this partially was my fault, I suppose. However, IF ONE STEP DOESNT WORK, THEY SHOULDNT PUT THAT AS AN OPTION. Anyways, I did The one step method. It said it should be fine if you don’t have grays. I also Did not feel like doing 6 hours of sit time... I just Thought I’d give it a shot! The smell was like a Smokey herby smell. My Hair came out amazing the next day, I loved It and was so excited! It worked, I thought. Then, one week later, it faded a lot. The pic is the first day, and 2 weeks in. Especially around the front, My side bangs are back to their old light brown. :( I knew there would be a transition, but I thought It would get darker, not lighter. I also had been using the henna guys shampoo on for every wash to help it stay in. The smell of henna also lingered for a while. So it either it transitioned lighter, or... it faded. Again that might be because I did One step. However, now it has been 2.5 weeks and I am still getting dye coming out in the shower. In the past I’ve had that for a week with regular dye, no big deal; but I use White towels so it’s a little frustrating to be going into a 3rd week of using a spare towel because I notice it still getting my towels dyed. And the fact that it didn’t stick to my hair and this is happening is just frustrating. There’s a chance I might Try this again with the 2 step method, but gosh, I just Don’t know if it’s worth it if it’s going to fade quickly. It takes a whole day to get it in, so it’s hard to talk myself into doing it even if it only lasts a month. I’ll have to check the others reviews.
