Perfect for rats! For females, you'll have to add some wire mesh to keep them in since the spacing on the bars are a bit wide, but for adult males [emphasis on the 'adult'], it's great as-is. The only aspect I've found that could use some improvement is the hinge on the doors. As opposed to having the rod that's keeping the doors in place be connected to the very edges of the doors to create a flush hinging mechanism, it's about a quarter-inch from the edge. This has the effect of creating a space when the door is closing for vulnerable tails to get trapped and potentially suffer catastrophic levels of damage were you to not notice and close the door forcefully, up to and including amputation! This is a minor but very serious oversight in the cage's design, so be extremely careful when closing the doors. It also would've been nice if there were doors on both sides of the cage rather than just the one on the right side, but that's not an uncommon feature in these types of cages, even if it's a bit annoying. Other than that, our rats have been greatly enjoying this cage, especially the shelf liners. I'd also compliment the pull-out tray in the bottom for the collection of waste--very useful! The lock is also a vast improvement over other cages we've gotten in similar price ranges; the door sits easily flush with its mate, and the lock mechanism secures so tightly that the door can't be jiggled when it's secured. We've never had any sort of issue with the locks in any of our other cages, but as far as quality of life improvements go, it's already making a rather noticeable difference. Note, THIS ITEM IS *NOT* SUITABLE FOR GUINEA PIGS, regardless of how it's advertised. Guinea pigs require an open space to graze and move about; in that way, they are like little potato-sized cattle. Their agility is also comparable to cattle. Putting them in a cage like this one that encourages climbing means offering them the possibility of a broken leg, or even worse: a dead piggy. Don't take that risk. A designated guinea pig cage like the Midwest or the Amazon Basics version is not only going to be cheaper than this, but it'll be much safer, as well. ... show more

I have bought two of these cages now, first one was amazing!! Second time I ordered there was a few minor cosmetic flaws. Not a big deal but some of the pieces were slightly warped and thank god it was easy enough to put back into place, made putting together a little hard. But these are overall super nice cages. Just wish they had double doors and you can’t complain with the price ... show more

I purchased two of the double cages in white, one for each of my chinchillas. It took me about two hours to put one together alone, as it can get a little difficult holding all of the pieces in place so they don’t pop out of the holes while you’re trying to connect the other sides, but I was able to assemble them by myself. :) Regarding the cages themselves, I didn’t have any issues with the first cage but the second cage “top” had two prongs missing so I had to zip tie it to the top/back of the cage. Since I’m using these for chinchillas I’ll be removing the plastic shelves, but needed to use them temporarily — unfortunately over half of the shelf prongs that connect the shelf to the cage were either already broken or broke upon attachment to the cage. The litter pans are a bit small and barely fit into the bottom of the cage — they kind of tilt to one side (I may place some cardboard between the pan and the cage, under the pan, to stabilize things) so you have to be careful there. Please note, the rack separating top cage from bottom is not removable, which was important to me because chinchillas need room to bounce around. I was able to cut the center rack with bolt cutters and file the metal smooth without sacrificing the stability of the product, which allowed me to open the cage and make it better for the chins. There is also a metal rack on the bottom of the cage, which isn’t good for chinchillas and their little feet. I purchased a metal pan to go inside the cage, but based it off the pan measurement shown in the listing, which (as noted above) wasn’t the right size. Instead of returning the two galvanized steel pans I purchased… I may try to get some untreated wood to create a frame around them, that way there aren’t any gaps and they are safe for the chins. I’m still not sure what I’ll do here. Overall, these cages are great for the price, they are sturdy, and they have worked great for my chins who absolutely love having the additional space! I would definitely purchase these again, even with the tweaking I had to do!! ... show more

It is very big, to me anyway. I’m 5”3 and it’s literally almost taller than me. It’s wide, and my chinchilla has a lot of space. The covers for the plastic ladders and ledges are nice, but please always take out plastic in a chinchillas cage, I don’t care if it comes with covers take it out. It was honestly a pain in the ass to put wood ledges in because my arms aren’t long enough to reach in and screw it in at the same time. Again, it’s pretty big. The metal on the sides of the doors get stuck on parts of the cage so it makes it harder to open and close them, but it looks like an easy fix as long as you’re able to saw some of it off. Pretty good cage for the price, and it was pretty easy to set up. The instructions literally have the same photo on each page and expect you to figure it out, but it’s pretty easy once you get then hang of it. I personally really like the cage. ... show more
