I am thoroughly impressed with this cage. I was on the fence for a little while between this and a Critter Nation. I’ve had a Critter Nation cage prior to this one and I was worried that this would seem like a cheap knockoff. I was blown away when it arrived. It was in pristine condition, nothing bent or broken. It uses all the same sized screws so no worry of putting one in the wrong location. It took me about 45 minutes to completely assemble it. (I used a cordless drill with an allen key bit attachment and a torque setting of 12) every piece lined up and every screw secured tight. A bit of advice: as you are assembling the cage, don’t put the screws in tight. Leave some play so that the cage might feel a little wobbly until you get it all assembled, then start at one side and check for squareness. Hold the frame steady and then crank down the screws on a single side. Follow up with the rest. Everything should align the way it is supposed to. The cage feels slightly less heavy construction wise in contrast to a CN, but that makes it easier to relocate when cleaning. This cage *is* suitable for pet rats, even juveniles. The bar spacing is less than a dime width. **see attached image for reference**. This cage is made be used as a bird enclosure or as a small animal cage. In addition to the crossed wire platforms, it came with 6 wooden perches which I hot glued some thin wood project boards to in order to give my rats more area on which to play. It also came with a coiled climbing rope and bell that has a flexible wire inside you can bend to desired shape as well as 8 water and seed cups and smaller sliding door openings for which to utilize them, however, since I won’t be needing to use those, I simply keep the sliding doors closed. (They have a secured semi lock position, so no worries about needing to zip tie them to keep curious rats from opening) Also, this cage is huge! I already had a stand set up for the cage so I ended up not using the one that came with it. The front two doors give you access to all areas of the cage, and if for some reason you aren’t able to get to a far corner, you can use one of the smaller doors. The locks are heavy duty and keep the doors secured and locked in place. All in all, you simply can’t beat this cage for value, size and quality. I am extremely happy about this purchase and so are my rat boys! **UPDATE** I’ve had the cage close to a year now and no complaints. In fact, as my 6 male rats grew bigger, I decided they needed more space and purchased a second cage which I connected to the first, using metal zip ties and the side doors as a pass through. I believe I can do some permanent modifications to take out the side panels and utilize the cages as a single open space though which I plan to try this weekend. This cage is pretty good for rats. I has a lot of vertical space and a decent amount of floor space on the bottom level. It can be made better with some modifications. I had to zip-tie the little doors all over the cage shut. I covered the wire platforms. I tried to cover the ladders, but they wouldn't use them when I did. I am going to try again now that they are more used to their new home. It isn't the easiest to clean, since you can't open it fully and have to reach through the doors, but it's not too bad. It can fit a large litter box and a 16-inch wheel. The bar spacing is very narrow, which is great for even young rats. I was a little disappointed by the color at first because it looked more grey than I was expecting, but now I don't mind. After seeing someone else's review where they put two of these cages together, I have decided to order another one and do that as well. I will continue to make changes here and there to make it better for my rats. I have pieces of cardboard around the perimeter of the bottom level and took out the grate and put the black tray in the bottom instead to try to give them a deeper layer of bedding. I would like to find a better solution for that still. I will add more pictures as I make improvements and modifications. It feels durable and stable. I have it on the stand with the wheels. It was pretty easy to put together. I think it is a good cage for the price. I looked at a ton of cages before deciding on this one and I am happy with my choice. I put the dimensions in various rat cage calculators online and they all said this cage could house 6 or 7 rats. I have 4 young rats in it now and I am getting 3 more rats soon. It seems perfectly suitable for 4. I can't speak for 7, as I don't have that many yet, but as I said, I am getting a second one of these anyway. UPDATE: I got a second one and, unfortunately, you can't put the two cages flush together if you have them on the stand, so I had to get creative and used one of those glass covers that goes on an oil lamp as a tunnel between the two cages. I stuck the ends through the little doors on the sides of the cage. It works perfectly! The rats have been using it for months and I haven't had any issues with them escaping or anything. ... show more

This is a birdcage, and although it says it’s meant to be for other small critters too, it’s very obvious it wasn’t designed that way. Let me explain. First off, the many little convenience doors. I don’t know what other people have, but my two chinchillas are pretty curious, and they went straight for them right away, and they’re placed all over this thing. It requires some strength to open slide them up, and I don’t think they themselves would be able to open them. I’m more concerned about my daughters opening one and leaving it open, which is the perfect size for them to escape through. I circumvented this by wire tying them all shut. Honestly there’s no need for them to open with the 2 oversized doors anyways. So keep that in mind if you have little kids and are considering this cage for anything other than a bird. Second, you need to know that the cage does NOT attach to the stand, but simply sits on top of it. Again, if you have busy little critters that tend to shake the cage (when running on their wheel for example), this is another obvious concern, especially if you plan on having the stand itself be on wheels (you don’t have to attach them if you don’t want to when building it). I had to improvise, and decided to flip the top bar of the stand, allowing me to screw the second bolt through the actual cage legs too. It’s hard to explain, and hopefully the pictures will help. Afterwards, it’s solid as a rock. I really don’t understand the design other than it was meant for birds, and not necessarily meant things hopping all over the place in there. I just want you to know that it IS possible to secure the cage to the stand without having to zip tie it or anything, but you’ll need to drill through the cage legs to do so. On a positive note, the cleaning pan is worlds easier than some of the other leading brands that require whatever is in the cage to sit on top of the pan itself. Which, in turn, requires a full removal of all that stuff every single time you clean the cage, which should be at least once a week. So simply sliding the tray out from underneath it instead is pretty great. At the end of the day, it’s a great size, and provides the verticality I wanted for the chins. The easy cleaning pan is great, and looking at the craftsmanship, I think the cage will be around for the life of my pets. It just took some creativity and work to make it so. TL;DR. If you are thinking of buying this for a small critter instead of a bird, just know that it was NOT designed for one, but CAN be made to work. ... show more

This cage was a lot nicer than I expected after getting a smaller cage from the same brand. It's sturdy, spacious, and the front locks are great to have. It was pretty easy to put together with two people. I did put lobster clasps on the smaller side doors because they slide up easily and I have two nosy sugar gliders. I think a rat or glider could open one of them if they were determined enough but it's an easy fix with some clasps or ties. ... show more

I love the great size of this with a smaller footprint. It is not as deep as many other cages, so it gives you the height and length without the width, which makes it more versatile when I try to find a space for it in the house. The hardest part may be getting it out of the box, so I suggest opening up both ends and just sliding it out because it's all zip tied together. The other tough part is holding the Allen wrench in place and not dropping it a billionth time while you're trying to put the thing together. It can be tricky putting it together but set aside and evening and no that you're going to have to recheck a few things here and there. I am not handy at all, and I was able to figure it out. It only takes one screw type, so that makes it easier. My rat is in heaven! This is such a spacious cage and takes up very little room in my house I love it! I highly recommend it. Looking for a study and stimulating enclosure for your chinnys? Look no further , This enclosure provides and excellent habitat for chinchillas as they like to run and jump. The only thing I should caution is if you are not a problem solver, have a low I.q ,nor handy,technical, puzzle oriented or patient you may not want to buy this, but if you don't mind having someone help you put it together then its a piece of cake. Something I thought was really cool about this is it comes with a rope toy that costs around $30 at some pet stores,wooden dowels and a bunch of food bowls. For chinchillas you'll want to purchase some fleece fabric to line the levels and stairs or something I found really helpful is on amazon if you look for liners for dog cages the plastic liners can fit perfectly if you use the wooden dowels as support beams. As soon as I set it up and let my chinchillas explore they couldn't decide weather or not they wanted to come out for playtime or stay in there new enclosure. With the measurements of the cage you can fit multiple chin spins depending on your choice of decore/set-up. Ive had it for a few months and its still holding up very well and it seems pretty heavy duty but you may want to be careful how much weight you put on make sure to put it in a spot where it cant get knocked over. The only thing that I think that could be improved on is the width , while it is a veryy good size on its own I think it is was slightly wider it would be the Taj mahal of chinny habitats. ... show more

I added lots of wooden planks so my rats could move all around. I also took the bottom grate out because I didn't want them to have their little hands on bars all the time. I put the plastic bottom on the top shelf and used the felt things for furniture on hardwood floor to lift it up. In the one picture you can see there's a slight crack but that's only from that angle. My rats haven't even noticed it. I cut rubber bath mats and put them on the shelves that were provided so, again, their little hands didn't have to be on bars all the time. I just wash them off when I clean the cage. They love the cage and, although it does look a bit big for rats, it's perfect. Really it's just tall and I have very energetic rats. We have to put them in their balls once to twice a day to run around so they love the extra room. Contrary to other reviews I found it to be quite sturdy. There was one hole that didn't have the feeling for the screw to go in. I happen to have some cork so I managed to rig it. Aside from that and it went together well. I don't particularly care for the small windows everywhere. I had to put zip ties and metal twisties on them to make sure they stay locked down but I did find them useful when trying to screw some of those shelves on myself.
