What is there to say that hasn't already been said? This is THE CAGE for pet rat owners. If you need more room later this cage literally sells extensions to just make it this cage+. It's spacious, its got a solid floor and thats easy to remove for cleaning and its got doors that open all the way up for easy access to your furry friends. It was also very easy to put together. The only suggestion I have is to have a screwdriver on hand. They send you one but that little thing isn't really cut out for the job. A mallet is suggested by the instructions but you can make do. (I did) The all metal construction makes for a heavy box but the thing has wheels once put together and that same metal is why it wont easily break later. I went from a normal sized cage to this little rat mansion and my boys have literally been bouncing and running around in there all week. They're way more comfortable and active now that there's more play space. If you're looking at the price and wondering if you should... Yes. In the long run you'll be better served by one cage that lasts a lifetime then having to rebuy new cages your pets grew out of. It's a smart purchase and this thing comes highly recommended on pretty much every forum for rat lovers. Edit: I forgot to mention one thing. They also sell little scatter guards for this cage specifically to keep your friends from redecorating the rest of your house with their bedding. Lives up to all expectations!

We ordered this cage on recommendations from experienced rat owners. This is our first time owning small animals and we wanted to get started on the right foot. The cage arrived promptly but the box was slightly damaged, so I was a little worried at first. Once we opened it up, though, everything was in perfect condition and protected by plastic and foam packaging. Assembly was definitely a two person job, there are several times when you have to line up both ends of a piece and then hammer it in to place at the same time. With my husbands help, this cage went together in around 25 minutes. The instructions say "No tools required" because they include a screwdriver that works for all pieces. However, we found it was necessary to use a rubber mallet to get some of the pegs all the way into their places. Now that the cage is together and we have brought our new rats home we couldn't be happier! (and neither could they!) The bar spacing is around 1/2" and our 3 month old female rats couldn't squeeze out if they tried. The horizontal bars are great for them, since they love climbing so much. There are also a huge number of ways/places to hang hammocks, tubes, cubes, toys and all the other fun things that they love to play with. The trays are made of thick, sturdy plastic and although mine are covered in fleece bedding, I don't notice an staining or smells from urine or feces once they are cleaned. When we initially put the cage together, the top shelf was slanted and I was worried that it wasn't fitting together properly. But after some searching and looking at other pictures, it seems this is normal and the rats don't seem to be bothered by it. The doors to this cage are great. They open wide and provide lots of accessibility for feeding, changing water, cleaning and playing with our rats. Make sure you place the cage somewhere that the doors can be opened all the way, or be prepared to fight with getting the bottom tray out. The tray is as wide as the door opening and without the doors all the way open the hinges/sides of the door will be in the way of removing it. Great cage, but have a hammer ready for assembly

My two rats love this cage. It is more than large enough for them to run around in and I can fit lots of toys, shelters, etc. inside. The horizontal bars are perfect and the rats love climbing the walls. I had my rats since they were just babies and the spacing of the bars was still small enough so that they couldn't slip out. I would recommend only getting a rat cage with similar horizontal bars, as climbing is one of my rats' favorite thing to do. I actually removed the stairs because they take up extra space and my rats can get from one floor to the other easily just by climbing up the wall. Even with the stairs in place, they rarely used them. However, if you are planning to use the stairs, the cage does come with a nice fleece cover for the stairs to protect your pet's feet. The cage is sturdy and feels like it's made of quality material. The wheels roll easily. One downside is that the knobs that you squeeze together to unlock the cage doors sometimes stick, make noise, or snack back quickly into place, which tends to scare my rats. The peg on the top of the right door does not always lock into place and I have to give it a little push forward to move it into place. The floors are made of a strong, thick plastic. My rats have chewed at it a bit but have not done any significant damage in 6 months of owning it. Because the doors open up all the way, it is very easy to clean. However, it can still be hard to get your animal out of the cage if they climb way into the back since the cage is so deep. Assembly was relatively straightforward, but I had a hard time during the later steps of installation because things were not fitting easily into place. I had to sort of pound the walls into place and when it came to the top, I had to take a hammer to it to get it to fit in. However, since everything was put together it has turned out to be a very solid cage. Overall: Strongly recommend this cage for rats. Assembly can be tough but it's worth it. On a side not, I would NOT recommend this cage for guinea pigs. I believe the incline of the stairs is a bit too steep for them and it also is a bit too small to give them the space they need to run around (google "C & C cage" instead). Disclaimer: This cage has only been inhabited for 4 days! I will update in a few months if I run into problems. SET-UP The instructions were pretty clear and easy to follow. I did not have a rubber mallet like others suggested and I put it together alright. I did have trouble getting the side panel in; I had to bend the insertion point and use a LOT of strength. The whole ordeal frustrated me enough to make me give up and return the next day to finish. QUALITY The cage is super sturdy and seems durable so far. Everything works as it should. It's well planned out with 3 height options for the balcony level, as well as many places to hang toys right under it. Also; it's just a beautiful cage 🖤 CLEANING The double doors make cleaning a cinch! There is so much room and the pans are easy to remove. CONS Of course, it couldn't be perfect. As I mentioned earlier, set up wasn't exactly a walk in the park, but it wasn't the toughest thing I've ever assembled. The biggest con is the SUPER shallow bottom pan to this cage. You're kidding yourself if you think bedding won't escape this pan. The worst part is that with the strange dimensions of the cage, it's really hard to find a deeper pan that will fit. Critter Nation does offer a scatter guard, when they should just offer a deeper pan overall instead of making us pay MORE money after having spent hundreds on the cage. The scatter guard has crap reviews too, so I won't be wasting money on that. FINAL THOUGHTS This could've been a 5 star review if the set up was easier and the bottom pan was deeper. I truly give it a 3.5/5, but since Amazon doesn't do half stars, I'll tip it to 4/5. It is a great quality cage at the end of the day. ... show more

I finally upgraded from a single to a double when I bought the upper level this week. Building the top was so much easier than the original single just because I struggled with putting the bottom shelf together alone. The cage is perfect with the wide opening doors. It makes cleaning very easy. The trays slide right out the front. The horizontal bars have such a small margin of spacing that this cage can house any rodent. The good parts being said, both the single and double that I ordered months apart, both came from Amazon with damages. Nothing that couldn’t be handled. I did contact Midwest over the phone because the single arrived with both plastic pans having huge cracks. The shelf pan had a busted corner and wasn’t usable, and I had already built the cage, so Midwest sent me replacements for free after I sent them photos. Their customer support is top notch and even though the pans could have been a bit better protected in the packaging, Amazon crushed the corner of the box. Last night I took the double out of the box and all seemed well at first. The pans were perfect this time but when I put the back cage wall up I noticed one of the metal squared peg holes was bent with the red plastic protector still inside of it. Luckily it wasn’t something a hammer couldn’t fix. I tapped on it enough to reposition it where it belongs, and used the claw of the hammer to pry it back into a square shape, then I was able to hammer the side wall down so the peg fit into the square, so all is well and it’s a tight fit. Critter Nation and Ferret Nation -- The Best Animal Habitats You Will Ever Own.
I have owned a Ferret Nation for years (over 10), in fact I owned two at one point. Given how well those cages held up (the second was given to a friend, and is still in like-new condition), I was ecstatic when I found the Critter Nation at a local PetsMart, and did more research online. The Ferret Nation and Critter Nation are essentially the same, except that the bars on the Critter Nation run horizontal and are not spaced as far apart as the Ferret Nation. The Critter Nation bars are even suitable for sugar gliders (they are only about the size of a chipmunk). In fact, I'm thinking about buying a second Critter Nation to upgrade my sugar gliders' housing, as the first one is in use by my more numerous pet rats currently. At this point, the Critter Nation is comfortably housing 8 pet rats, and is split into separate units by locking the ladder in an "up" position (standard function for the cage). My 5 wonderful boys live on the lower level, and my 3 beautiful girls live on the upper level. I'm looking at buying the scatter guard accessory trays, but for now I'm just using the normal trays that come with the cage. While it's inconvenient to sweep up their bedding so often, it's still worth it to provide them with the extra space, and I have options to consider to help prevent this issue in the future. Pros: * The Critter Nation is SOLID. Rats are really intelligent and I always have to consider if they can escape a cage by operating whatever locking mechanism it has -- that's not a concern at all with the doors on the Critter Nation, yet they are still easy for me to open despite having tendonitis in my dominate hand. My Ferret Nation is now 10+ years old and does not have any rust on it, the door locks still work perfectly, and the cage is like new. I expect my Critter Nation will hold up just as well over time. * LOTS of room. The cage is huge and leaves plenty of room to accessorize -- the underside of the shelves even have bars on them, despite the shelves being solid, so you can hang light-weight items like hammocks or small bird toys on the underside of the shelves to entertain your pet! * The shelves have solid plastic covers. This is a huge issue for me as I once had a special needs rat that had foot injuries, wire shelves, bottoms and ramps were just not an option with him, and since then, I don't consider them an option with my other rats either. The solid shelves eliminate the potential for foot injury as there's really no way for your rat to get its feet caught in the shelf. * They make washable covers for the wire ramps -- Again, I don't like wire ramps, floors or shelves due to the potential for foot-injury with rats, but there is an option to buy ramp covers as accessories, which makes them solid and can prevent injury in the long run. I was even lucky even to receive ramp covers with my order, free of charge. The best part is that I can toss them in the washer and dryer, so I'm not scrubbing them by hand. * You can add to this cage. I bought the single unit and the add-on unit at the same time, so my cage only needs one stand. I've separated it into two cages by using the feature that allows you to lock the ramp between units in an up position against the underside of the top unit, this closes the hole and prevents pets from going up or down into the other unit. What I realized when I added my second unit onto the original is that it had the potential for even more units if I so desired. I think this is a great feature, though I'm sure I would need a step-stool to clean the third unit as it would be quite a bit taller than me at that point. * The stand has wheels. This is great when you need to relocate the cage on the same floor of a home, or if you just need to move it a bit for cleaning. The wheels have locking features for safety as well. Cons: * The doors are really big, it's sort of a pro and con all at the same time. It's easier to clean, but the size of the doors are the only thing that makes me think twice about putting Sugar Gliders in this cage -- if you have a pet that's sneaky and prone to attempt escape, and there's more than one animal in the unit, the chances of them being able to get past you are increased due to how large the doors are. * The cage is kind of expensive. This is only a con at the start, and you have the option to buy it one unit at a time. I have not found a comparable cage for a better price, however. * The cage is very heavy, but I only really noticed this when I had to move the boxes it arrived in before assembly. This is something to consider when you order it if you have to go up or down a lot of stairs -- you may be moving it a few pieces at a time before assembly. I have only moved my Ferret Nation once when I bought a home and moved out of the place I had been renting, and over all, it's not nearly as bad as moving large appliances. Ultimately, for housing rats and similar pets, I think this cage is excellent. I'd love to give my gliders the space of the Critter Nation, but I'm reluctant at this point only because of the size of the doors, the quickness of a sugar glider, and the gliders' ability to climb and fly short distances. My rats will more than get my money's worth out of this cage and I believe that for them, it was an excellent investment. The Ferret Nation is also wonderful for Ferrets and Chinchillas as I have previously housed both of those kinds of animals in my old Ferret Nation unit -- you can even buy an external ramp for it to allow your ferret or chinchilla to free-range at their leisure. I would highly recommend these cages to anyone looking to give their pets a lot of space, particularly if you know you will continue to have those kinds of animals in your life, as this cage will generally long out-last the life span of the animals it can comfortably house. I LOVE this cage. I had a merry mansion from one of the other pet stores for nearly two years until my first rat, Pete, died. My remaining boy, Eddie, was still full of it, so I got him two companions. As Sven and Einar got bigger, it was clear that the merry rat mansion was becoming more of a cramped hoarder's shack. I knew it was time to invest in the Critter Nation. I have not regretted it for ONE. SINGLE. MINUTE. All the good stuff I've ever heard is entirely true. WAY easier to clean, the boys can stretch out and nose off at their leisure, it's great to decorate with lots of hammocks and shelves, and there's just so much more space for them to exist in comfort. It was very simple and easy to put together . . . but in all transparency my romantic associate and I are really good with puzzles, assembly, and building stuff. No issues with the corners all matching up as I've read in other reviews. If you don't have a rubber mallet, try a chunk of 2x4 and a hammer (to avoid hitting the metal with a hammer, just put the wood on top of the stubborn joint and tap away till it's level) when fitting stubborn things together. It DOES require a certain amount of effort to get the pegs into the holes, but if you are patient and have the right equipment, it's very easy. I had heard the recommendation to get a cement pan from a hardware store to fit into the bottom. You do need to cut it down to make it fit, OR -- I have seen a video online (YouTube channel called ShadowTheRat) where the bottom was taken out of the CN and the cement pan was fitted down into the bottom of the cage, expanding the space inside the cage in the process. I wanted the space underneath the cage for storage, so I cut the cement pan down to fit on top of the existing cage bottom. It helps keep the bedding inside the cage for sure. The thing is HUGE. I had originally been trying to decide if I needed a double, but this is WAAAYYY bigger than I had realized. I don't intend to expand my Mischief further anytime soon, but I feel I could keep 4 rats in this cage fairly comfortably. Any more than that and it would need an addition to make it a double just to ensure the quality of life for the Rat Boys. Recommend this cage 100% to any rat owners who are sick of trying to arrange hammocks, fleece, newspaper lining, etc through a tiny cage door with the result of unintentionally discovering new yoga poses no one should ever try under those conditions. Life is WAY simpler now. And now I have a new focal point of my whole living room, too, as this thing will dominate any room it's in. Not a problem if you LOVE your rats! ... show more

Large and expensive, but worth it

This should have been the cage I bought from the start. As it is, this is the second cage I've bought for my two rats. I'm no stranger to keeping small rodents, and I bought this cage expecting to use it for a long time. It has the feel of something meant to last, so I wouldn't spend the money on a cage like this just to use it once and leave it in the garage. Some things to note: this cage is HEAVY. I bought the single-level home, but had previously ordered the double-level and returned it in exchange for the single-level. The weight difference in the boxes was nearly indistinguishable. I'm not someone who has issues lifting heavy things, but the sheer size of the box made it unwieldy and nearly impossible to move it up the stairs to the second floor, where I keep my rats. I left the box downstairs, opened it, and then moved every piece upstairs individually. Secondly, you will see notes from other customers that this isn't exactly easy to put together without help. I consider myself a good DIY kind of person, but I didn't have anyone around to help me build this thing, and for the first few steps, I wished I did. The way this cage is assembled needs two people, in order to make sure you're screwing things in at the correct angle. Not impossible to do alone, but I sure would have liked another pair of hands. Also, I had a few pieces with bent parts. Nothing serious, but there were areas that I had to make sure to pound back into shape before everything would fit together properly. Overall, I'm super happy I bought this cage. It's the perfect size, definitely solid build quality, and something I hope to use for a long time. ... show more
