I have owned a Ferret Nation for years (over 10), in fact I owned two at one point. Given how well those cages held up (the second was given to a friend, and is still in like-new condition), I was ecstatic when I found the Critter Nation at a local PetsMart, and proceeded to do more research about it online. The Ferret Nation and Critter Nation are essentially the same, except that the bars on the Critter Nation run horizontal and are not spaced as far apart as the Ferret Nation. The Critter Nation bars are even suitable for sugar gliders (they are only about the size of a chipmunk). In fact, I'm thinking about buying a second Critter Nation to upgrade my sugar gliders' housing, as the first one is in use by my more numerous pet rats currently. At this point, the Critter Nation is comfortably housing 8 pet rats, and is split into separate units by locking the ladder in an "up" position (standard function for the cage). My 5 wonderful boys live on the lower level, and my 3 beautiful girls live on the upper level. I'm looking at buying the scatter guard accessory trays, but for now I'm just using the normal trays that come with the cage. While it's inconvenient to sweep up their bedding so often, it's still worth it to provide them with the extra space, and I have options to consider to help prevent this issue in the future. Pros: * The Critter Nation is SOLID. Rats are very intelligent and I always have to consider if they can escape a cage by operating whatever locking mechanism it has -- that's not a concern at all with the doors on the Critter Nation, yet they are still easy for me to open despite having tendonitis in my dominate hand. My Ferret Nation is now 10+ years old and does not have any rust on it, the door locks still work perfectly, and the cage is like new. I expect my Critter Nation will hold up just as well over time. * LOTS of room. The cage is huge and leaves plenty of room to accessorize -- the underside of the shelves even have bars on them, despite the shelves being solid, so you can hang light-weight items like hammocks or small bird toys on the underside of the shelves to entertain your pet! * The shelves have solid plastic covers. The solid shelves eliminate the potential for foot injury as there's really no way for your rat (or other pet) to get its feet caught in the shelf. * They make washable covers for the wire ramps -- I don't like wire ramps, floors or shelves due to the potential for foot-injury with rats, but there is an option to buy ramp covers as accessories, which makes them solid and can prevent injury in the long run. I was even lucky even to receive ramp covers with my order from WayFair through Amazon, free of charge. The best part is that I can toss them in the washer and dryer, so I'm not scrubbing them by hand. * You can add-on to this cage. I bought the single unit and the add-on unit at the same time, so my cage only needs one stand. I've separated it into two cages by using the feature that allows you to lock the ramp between units in an up position against the underside of the top unit, this closes the hole and prevents pets from going up or down into the other unit. What I realized when I added my second unit onto the original is that it had the potential for even more units if I so desired. I think this is a great feature, though I'm sure I would need a step-stool to clean the third unit as it would be quite a bit taller than me at that point. * The stand has wheels. This is great when you need to relocate the cage on the same floor of a home, or if you just need to move it a bit for cleaning. The wheels have locking features for safety as well. Cons: * The doors are really big, it's sort of a pro and con all at the same time. It's easier to clean, but the size of the doors are the only thing that makes me think twice about putting Sugar Gliders in this cage -- if you have a pet that's sneaky and prone to attempt escape, and there's more than one animal in the unit, the chances of them being able to get past you are increased due to how large the doors are. * The cage is kind of expensive. This is only a con at the start, and you have the option to buy it one unit at a time. I have not found a comparable cage for a better price, however. * The cage is very heavy, but I only really noticed this when I had to move the boxes it arrived in before assembly. I had to slide them around on my floor because I could not lift them by myself. This is something to consider when you order it if you have to go up or down a lot of stairs -- you may be moving it a few pieces at a time before assembly. I have only moved my Ferret Nation once while it was fully assembled, and over all, it's not nearly as bad as moving large appliances. Ultimately, for housing rats and similar pets, I think this habitat is excellent. I'd love to give my gliders the space of the Critter Nation, but I'm reluctant at this point only because of the size of the doors, the quickness of a sugar glider, and the gliders' ability to climb and fly short distances. My rats will more than get my money's worth out of this cage and I believe that for them, it was an excellent investment. The Ferret Nation is also wonderful for Ferrets and Chinchillas as I have previously housed both of those kinds of animals in my old Ferret Nation unit -- you can even buy an external ramp for it to allow your ferret or chinchilla to free-range at their leisure. I would highly recommend these cages to anyone looking to give their pets a lot of space, particularly if you know you will continue to have those kinds of animals in your life, as this cage will generally long out-last the life span of the animals it can comfortably house. The fact that I have other cages with wire walls that are less than 5 years old but experiencing rust issues speaks volumes, as my 10+ year old Ferret Nation doesn't have a single speck of rust on it, and buying two smaller cages (Super Pets or All Living Things, for example) will cost nearly as much as a Ferret or Critter Nation... but it won't hold up as well over time, and it won't offer your pet as much space. The Critter Nation and Ferret Nation are definitely worth-while investments.

This cage is the only one you're going to need to buy. I added the third story so the boys (3 male rats) have as much space as I can give them- which has improved their litter box use! It's been worth it for me. Cleaning is so much easier with this cage. My complaint is that both the two story cage and add-on arrived slightly bent and damaged, in boxes that were clearly dropped. This could easily be due to local shipping providers, as I've had similar issues with other products. It did mean that I had to tap the peg inserts straight again with a mallet, had it arrived straight it would have been easier to assemble. I'm also reluctant to roll it around on the carpet because the base seemed strained by the motion. I'm not sure if it's user error (ie. Maybe I need to tighten something. I'll check at some point.) or if it's simply not designed for rolling around much. Also those little securement hooks that you're supposed to install... I wish the instructions had made that bit pop out more, because adding them after it's already assembled is annoying/hard to reach. Invest in a step ladder. It's also not entirely compatible with water bottles. It's a little hard to jam the straw through the narrow spacing (which is otherwise ideal). Those are little things though and I'm still very happy with it. It has saved a TON of time during cleanup. I didn't bother getting full size trays, I just got small cat boxes for pooping in+the dig box and left newspaper/cloth everywhere else. I haven't had major issues with bedding on the floor, but my boys are pretty easy-going. They love their home!

What can I say? I love this cage brand. It is easy to install. And I’ma have jointed a few cages. And mase a huge unit for my rat. They do have supervised free roam during the day, but they are nocturnal. They need the space inside their cage. This case is perfect.

I can not believe it took me this long to get this set up. We purchased 2 + the extender ( all three is almost as tall as the ceiling ) and they have SO MUCH ROOM! It's easy to install, it looks nice, it's easy to clean and they can rough house in there or chase each other all they want. I personally use 2 potty pads on the bottom and that works well for us. I have 3 ferrets and I could probably get 2 more in here comfortably. I am so glad we made this investment for them!

I like the ability to add cages. They stack on top. I'm including a picture with 2 levels. It is sturdy and you're able to hang so many toys. The one small shelf included with each level has bars underneath for hanging and it's removable. You can mount it on either side . Assembly was easy with my 12-year-old and myself, however, we had to use our own soft mallet in places to get the pieces to fit. The cages have these huge doors that are very, very convenient. I have some issues, but it would not deter me from buying this cage again. These issues include: 1. the big pans on the bottom do not have high-raised sides, so you have to improvise to keep bedding and debris from falling. I cut out cardboard to go around, but the rats love to chew it. 2. One of the bottom large pans was cracked when I opened the box. I took care not to drop or knock the box over when unpacking, so I don't know how it happened. I used duct tape on the underside to try and seal the busted part. 3. The large bottom pan on top has a corner cut out so you can make one big cage as opposed to 2 separate ones. That's nice, but I need 2 separate cages because I have a couple of rescue rats that are male, and I don't want them to mate with the females. I used zip ties to replace cage wire where the gap is made and placed a piece of cardboard over it. It would be nice if there was an option to keep the cages separate. Overall, this is the best rat cage I've seen in a while.

Although it takes maybe 15 to 30 mins to put together as some of the pieces come a bit bent, it has provided a huge space for my ratties! I did not put in the bottom ledge, so they are able to have many hammocks, swings and ladders all over the place to explore. I house my 5 rats in this cage and they are very pleased with their new environment. another plus is that once fully assembled, you are able to see the animals much easier, and often do not have to crouch to see them. It is almost my height when standing up, and the doors are a bit rickety, but as long as you are sure they are locked, they work pretty well.

I have pet rats and I ordered this cage add on to give my five boys more room. IT IS THE BEST CAGE FOR RATS! The bar spacing is .5 inches and the bars are horizontal for climbing. The add on comes with two ladders and two ladder covers, one half tray and one full tray, and the pieces to make the cage walls. The only thing I dislike is the fact that once the middle grate is in its a pain to rearrange the set up if you want. in a perfect situation there are no tools needed to put this cage together but for me that was not the case. The sides have pegs at the bottom that rest in the top of the single unit. On my add on they were a bit too tight and I had to use a hammer and bang them looser. After that it was so easy. the only issue I have and I was anticipating it because I have experience with this cage, is that you can't use a bedding besides fleece without buying the scatter guards. I don't like loose bedding anyway so its not a problem for me. The removable trays make cleaning so easy. The placement of the bars make customization so easy as well. if you can afford the investment I would just get this cage system. if not there are some decent alternatives, like the all living things pet home and the feisty ferret is decent with modification.
