  • A Cage For The Spoiled Hamster(s)
Style: Heaven
I had hamsters as a kid back in the 80’s so when my daughter asked for a hamster for her birthday I figured why not? As part of showing she was ready to take on the responsibility of having her own pet, her dad and I had her research how to care for a hamster and WOW have things changed. After learning about the proper space requirements for a Syrian, we quickly realized the “hamster cage” we used for our son’s mice wasn’t going to cut it. After much deliberation we decided on this cage and I’m glad we did. The box it came shipped in was well-padded and the pieces were in pristine condition. There were even some extra tunnel pieces so we just stored them in case we ever need to replace some. My daughter’s new fur baby, Nefertiti, seems quite happy with her new abode. I wasn’t sure about the size of the little covered “beds” but they’re plenty big enough for her to move around in. I like that the food bowl is stainless steel. Unlike others, I don’t find that the water bottle leaks any more than any other bottle we had for my hamsters (or the one for my son’s mice). Maybe bottle technology has changed? The wheel that came with the cage seems to be a decent size for our girl and the noise isn’t an issue as the cage is in our library/formal living room, however, we had already purchased a silent runner wheel in anticipation of getting Nefertiti so I went ahead and installed it as you can see in the pictures. I was unsure whether or not the two platforms were really worth the extra cost but I think they are. As soon as the little fuzzball woke up and got comfortable exploring her cage, she quickly zoomed from one platform, down to the bottom and back up the other side. Like others said, she hasn’t bothered with the ramps but there’s enough bedding that she just hops up without them. Since we just got her today, she hasn’t yet explored the tunnels or turret on top but I have no doubt she will be making use of them soon. Update: we have seen her use both ramps multiple times as well as just jumping up on the platforms. The water bottle doesn’t seem to be leaking at all now (and I checked to make sure it is working). She found the tunnels the first night and quickly decided she was going to sleep there. They already got pretty gross since she was spending so much time there. Others mentioned that their hams got bedding in the tunnels and weren’t able to get out of them without help. Nefertiti didn’t seem to have that problem. We didn’t put bedding in the turret because of the comments from other users but she brought some up there on her own. It didn’t stop her from moving it all around. 2nd update: We’ve had our hamster and this cage for about a month and are still thrilled with it. I ended up reconfiguring the tunnels up to the turret and Nefertiti seems perfectly happy with it this way (bonus is fewer tunnels to take apart for cleaning then reassemble). Our son (11) was envious of his sister’s hamster and missed having his own pocket pet so we let him get one too. I tried to talk him into making a DIY cage based on tutorials I’d seen online but he was adamant he wanted the same cage for his girl (Rey Skyhamster). It came today and his little baby seems happy with her cage as well. He decided to configure the platforms differently which meant the green “slide” doesn’t fit. His baby is still very small and unable to make the stretch up to the top level so I used a natural wooden bendy bridge to give her a way up. We’re waiting for her Silent Runner to arrive so we put the wheel that came with the cage in but, like so many others said, it’s very noisy and bounces a lot. Overall, still no complaints. ... show more

  • YES! This is the BEST on the market for a Syrian hamster!!
Style: Heaven
So my sister got me a hamster (Stewart!!) for my birthday back in October, of course in one of those tiny little cages from a chain petstore. I didn't know anything about hamster care at first, but after some research I realized that cage was just NOT okay for my Syrian. So I spent a few weeks searching obsessively for a habitat that was large enough, had covered nesting space, and also had an element of fun to keep my hamster entertained. Sure, you can find a big empty habitat and customize it with your own things, but for a first time hamster owner or honestly for anyone looking to save money, this is IT. It will cost you a lot to buy all your supplies separately and put together your own habitat (I did the math). This habitat might seem expensive, but it is COMPLETELY WORTH IT. Stewart LOVES this habitat and has been SO happy ever since I moved him into it! He has tons of room to forage for food and treats on the first floor. He's a daredevil so he loves climbing all over the platforms. And I think the tubes to get to the nesting space on top actually make him feel safer, like he's not as exposed to predators. As for the top area and the tubes to get there: some reviews mention hamsters filling up the tubes with paper and potentially getting stuck. I watched my little guy closely for the first few days of use to see what would happen and make sure he was safe and could travel back and forth through the tubes easily. I leave some bedding in the top every time I clean it, but he loves bringing more up to really fill up that area. However, he also seems to intentionally leave paper inside the tube (the bottom one inside the cage) as well. The first time I noticed the tube was full of paper, I kept an eye on him until he finally came out to explore - and easily scratched his way through the bedding in the tube to get out. Since then, he consistently fills the tube with paper, and always is able to get himself out. This might be worrisome for some hamster owners, but hamsters love burrowing, so I truly think Stewart does it on purpose and also feels safer with it there. I have no concerns about the tube dropping down from the bottom of the nesting area at all. ONE CON: The wheel that comes with this cage MIGHT work for your Syrian. However, I noticed Stewart's back was still a bit arched when he used it. So I invested in a large silent spinner for him, and he loves it. Because of the size of the silent spinner, I removed one of the platforms. But this habitat is customizable, so every few months I switch things around to engage my little guy's sense of play and curiosity. This is a big cage with lots of parts, but they all come apart and snap back together easily, so doing a full clean does take a bit of time, but overall is very easy. Just put on some music & have fun! Also, the nesting area on the top has an easy-to-remove roof. Since that is where Stewart likes to use the bathroom, it's so easy for me to snap the roof off every night, do a quick clean up, and then snap it back on. Basically, this habitat is safe and healthy for Syrian hamsters, and it is the ONLY appropriate, safe, fun, and all-inclusive cage I could find on the market after tons of research. I HIGHLY recommend this to any Syrian hamster parents who want their little fur friends to have the best life possible. The price is entirely worth it to see how happy and healthy your hamster is as soon as they move in. ... show more
