Excellent printer for small office or home network use. This is a great printer. I bought this because I needed a reliable model that does one thing and does it well. This is that printer model. My purchase came with 256MB of installed memory, no duplex device, or productivity kit. It did come with starter toner, for at least 1000 pages and a power cord. This printer is very very fast at 24 pages-per-minute. The monthly duty cycle for this printer is 40,000 pages. With my usage (very-low volume printing) at 10-15 pages per year this printer I predict will be incredibly worth it and reliable. Of course it may break down eventually but that's why I have the on-site warranty and can pay Xerox if needed. I'm not a business by any means, just a single network admin home user with corporate-level network gear. This printer is obviously designed for business use and for me that means that this model is a great deal for $164.99 (the price when I bought it) because the hardware is practically guaranteed to last a long long time. Replacement non-OEM toner is $35 to $60 for a full four cartridges, or I can buy them separately for $18 as I need them. Regardless, replacement toner for this model is cheap and I'm not likely to need it for at least a couple years. It's nice to know that those options are there if I need it, though. I printed off a couple test pages to see the printer in action and my first page appeared in about 11-12 seconds. That's quite fast. The pages included color, which appeared vibrant and nothing came off the page when I rubbed my fingers over it. A few reviews mentioned toner flaking off the pages, and I haven't seen any of that yet. The printer was comparatively quiet while printing (as compared to a full-size fan that is in my room). The only time I really hear it is when it first starts up and goes through the short diagnosing phase. Strangely, the default is to print a test page on each start-up - that will just waste toner and paper, which is an awful Xerox choice. Luckily it's quite easy for people like me who love to tweak the settings on all our devices to change that so that the printer will not print on each start up. The printer has an Ethernet port with a Gigabit interface. For routers which support that interface duplex and speed, the speed for accessing printer pages on the network goes way down. The printer is slow with a 400Mhz processor, but it includes real Adobe PostScript 3 support and most computers will choose that as the default choice. It's also got a USB 2.0 port but I suspect most people like me will hook this device up to a network directly - it works so much better in that configuration and it shows in all the protocol support the printer offers. The printer directly supports dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 networks, so it's all ready for whenever everyone decides to switch over. Finally, my impression of this printer is that it has a fairly basic software / feature set (if you're like me and opted out of any of the add-ons) but that the hardware reliability is amazing and the price is just right for when you really need a reliable home printer. Get this, you'll not be disappointed!

so far so good, bought this printer about a month ago. Unfortunately when it arrived there was a problem. the printer was showing a false error message directing me to remove the protective strips on the toner imaging unit. The protective tape had been removed without incident upon unpacking, no tearing at all, should not have been an issue. I informed Amazon and Immediately a new printer was shipped on the condition that i return the original within 30 days at no cost to me. I did so and the replacement unit arrived two days later, excellent respnse by Amazon. The printer itself has performed very well to this point. I have only used it for 1,000 copies, but most of those were on heavy card stock. There is significant curling, and as I did not order the duplex attachment, 2nd sided printing will be a concern. It can definitely be done, the only question is whether it will require manual feeding. The print quality is excellent, and I have been in the printing business for over 30 years. Photo quality color printing with surprising speed of processing. (printed 500 FULL 100% coverage pages on 67 lb stock) Toner consumption appears possibly better than advertised. The intitial 'starter' cartridges printed approximately 300 of these FULL Coverage 8.5 x 11 photos. The 'starters' are rated for 1000 standard (5%x 4 colors?) coverage. By that rating I would have expected to get 250 max of this particular print job, I got the 300 plus approx 50 'regular text' prints. Given the inexpensive price of $192.00, I consider this printer so far to have been a VERY good buy. It was a replacement fo rmy Phaser solid ink 8560 that I was very happy with. The cost per page for the 8560 and it's versatility were significantly better than this unit, but the 8560 is no longer made by Xerox and it's replacement, the color cube is far too expensive both for intitial cost AND cost per page. It's early and I intend to work this printer retty hard, but at this point I am very happy with it.

UPDATE 12/2019. It's December 2019 and I am still using the same Brother printers (HL-4150DN and HL-L8350CDW) from Amazon that replaced these Xerox printers. The Brother printers work well on the after market toner from Amazon that is CHEAP. I still liked the color prints slightly better on the Xerox with the expensive genuine Xerox toner but I am glad I switched over to the Brother printers as they have been reliable and are cheap to operate due to toner cost. I purchased 3 of these Xerox printers through Amazon during 2013. Amazon and 3rd party providers (seller's) were excellent. For work, I print a lot of lengthy files of legal size pages of text and photos (about 35 pages text, 12 full photo pages). 1st printer worked good out of the box. 2nd printer went back as it did not print properly. 3rd worked well out of the box. These printers work well through the original toner and the first printer made it through the most of the 2nd set of Xerox genuine $455 per set toner. Then it developed a light printing down one side of the paper. Now it sits in the closet as a potential parts machine. Printer #3 is now ready for the garbage can and I will send printer #1, the parts machine along with it. These 2 printers did not last through 20,000 pages. They are junk. The $455 per set of genuine toner does not last very long with full size photo pages and these printers will not work on after market toner for photo pages as the toner cakes and flakes and smears no matter which after market brand is used. I have tried all of the better recommended brands on Amazon and found none that work for the photo pages. The Xerox $455 genuine toner cost is totally unacceptable (like getting mugged at the at supply store). I also purchased in 2013, a Brother HL4150CDN for my wife's office use (a test machine) which has been a great printer. It has now been confiscated as the Xerox replacement until I get her another Brother. The genuine Brother toner is about $350 per set (100 bucks less), and instead of a rating of 2500 pages it is rated at 3500 pages and the print quality has been good. It is on its 2nd genuine toner set and I will try the after market toner shortly. Don't waste your money on the Xerox unless you only print text and little in the way of photo pages and you have very deep pockets for the overpriced Xerox toner..

Worked great until we needed to finally change the toner then it stopped working. It won't recognize the new cartridges and we've tried several new sets. Now I have a paperweight that will cost more to fix then it did when I bought it. Oh and it only cost me $300 or so when I bought it so $1000 is a complete rip off for this hunk of junk.

Update 3/23/2013: Xerox has updated their printer driver to correct the power save bug. I'm updating this review to give 5 stars up from 4! The Xerox 6500N is a solid color laser printer. The color resolution is exceptional for the price, offering near-photographic quality. The cost of ownership is quite low, with 4 separate color cartridges you only need to replace the color you run out of. There are a few very small things to keep in mind with this printer: 1. Although it has a rather small form factor, it's very heavy for its size. 2. It's quite a bit louder than most laser printers. If you keep this in your office, place it as far away from a telephone as possible. 3. The USB port works perfectly and is lightning fast. If you run this as a workgroup printer on a network, though, be aware that there's a bug in the network printer driver. If the printer is on your network and the printer has gone into power-saver mode, about one print job in ten will fail to "wake up" the printer, and the print job will time out with an error. That can be frustrating, but Xerox is usually very good about correcting this sort of bug and it's a fairly new model printer. Overall, a very good choice for the budget-conscious office.

This printer is pretty good. First off, it is huge. It makes such an impression you kind of think it is going to be one of those awesome, super fast laser printers that make you so happy you shelled out the cash for it. It isn't and then you remember it really wasn't so expensive so you kind of forgive it. I find it a bit odd that it isn't wireless. You can network with ethernet, but it feels like in 2015, this should just be standard on a printer. We knew it going in to buying it and we have a nearby jack so this wasn't an issue for us -- just figured I would call that out. Set up was easy. Printing: The first page is pretty slow to print -- a lot of warming up and such. It can also stall a bit between pages even in black & white printing. Print quality is pretty high and this is the main reason we picked it. The colors are more realistic on photos than other color lasers I have used (Brother 3170). I had read about its quality in reviews and agree with the results. It is the main reason I picked this printer. On regular paper, it is all that you hoped it could be. The printer struggles with thicker paper -- not even card stock, just a presentation weight paper. Everything comes out pretty curled. If you step up to a brochure thickness, you best break out an iron to flatten it. I know laser printers can create curls, I guess I thought it wouldn't be so pronounced. Or, that I could simply curl those occasional thicker pages in the opposite direction and end up with a usable page. You can't. It also has a fair number of mis-feeds on the thicker pages -- even when set to run thicker paper in its settings. There is no pass through either where you can try to avoid the curling. If you are buying for printing in color on regular paper, it is probably a good option. The print results are good. If you live in Seattle, mine will probably be on Craigslist in the near future! Low print quantity! New Toner! If you are looking for printing on thicker paper on an even somewhat regular basis, get an inkjet with a low print cost rate. Or maybe there is another similarly priced laser printer out there with some sort of straight path pass through.

It's a solid printer, but the Amazon page is very misleading. I ended up not getting what I expected, so I'm pretty disappointed in it. The goal of this purchase was to replace an inkjet that was costing me about $4-5 per page, since I only used it few times a year and the ink was completely drying out within a year. This printer is still a good investment, but I'd like to mention the issues I have with it: 1) Printer is marketed as wireless. Yes, it supports wireless printing, but you have to buy an adapter. On the official product page via Xerox's website, the wireless adapter is $220. You can buy a regular wireless adapter and patch cable for significantly less. It's still technically wired, but it's plugged into a wireless receiver which I guess kind of counts as being a wireless device? I personally think that's a stretch and that the item should not be labeled as wireless, especially considering it's a separate purchase. Here's a link to the "Official" one: http://www.office.xerox.com/product-resources/097S03740/enus.html 2) Printer supposedly supports double-sided printing. Once again, it's supported but not part of what you're buying on Amazon. The duplexer is $100 on the Xerox site ( http://www.office.xerox.com/product-resources/097S04069/enus.html ). Any printer technically supports double-sided printing if you manually flip the pages around and print half the document on the back. That's not really what double-sided printing means though. And to answer a few of the common questions: * It's heavy. Like, 45 lbs heavy. Easy enough to move by yourself, but probably not something you want to move around too often. * It comes with mini-toner cartridges. They're rated up to 1000 pages each on average. If you don't use your printer often, expect it to last years. * Make sure you have adequate power on your circuit. This thing uses 375W when printing (neither Amps or Volts are listed). It makes all the lights flicker in any room when I turn it on. If you're on a 15 amp circuit in a home office with a beefy PC, and 3-4 monitors, you probably can't have this in the same room. I had to put mine in the hallway when I want to use it, and then move it into the closet when I'm done. * No Ethernet cable included. Not a big deal for the vast majority of us (who doesn't have a few extras lying around?), but it's kind of weird not to include one when you can't print without it.

We have owned this for about a month and we love it! We own an in home daycare and print a lot of stuff! We had become frustrated with inkjets that guzzle ink like a 1 ton truck on gasoline and decided on a laser because they have become more affordable. We are still using the "shipping" toner cartridges and have gone through 2 reams of paper with no "low toner" signal yet. With ink we would have already spent about $250!!! Common complaints about picture quality depend on the original. If it is a low resolution to start with, that's what gets printed. We get good pictures (great color too!) using ones downloaded from our camera! The print speed is faster than any ink jet we ever owned!?! Common complaints about footprint and weight are misleading because lasers are more complex and do have more parts to them. Ours has its own little stand and we accept it for what it is. The only complaint on this is the wireless operation is really slow if you don't add memory (just hard wire it!) If you want 2 sided (automatic) feature, buy the one with the duplexer.
