  • Great product and fast
Capacity: 10TB Style: 256 MB Cache
I have bought 3 of these over the past 2 years and they are reliable and fast. I would rather pay for a known brand. I can't say that I have ever used their support or had to return one. I have all sorts of brands in servers but would rather have a WD in my servers.

  • It works and it's very quiet
Capacity: 2TB Style: 128 MB Cache
I bought one of these drives in like-new condition from Amazon Warehouse to replace a dead Seagate Pipeline drive in a satellite receiver/DVR. It's only been running for a couple of weeks but I just had to reiterate what most reviews here are stating - it is amazingly quiet and very fast! The original drive made quite a racket because the DVR is always recording but this one is barely noticeable. My only complaint is that the manufacturing date is in July of 2021 - almost 2 years ago - which cuts the warranty significantly. I looked up the warranty status on WD's support website and found that it expires in December of 2024 - only 18 months instead of 3 years as advertised. I don't know what manufacturing date the new ones are shipping with but if the warranty is important to you I would look for the date before opening the anti-static bag it comes in so you can return it unopened if necessary. You can also check the warranty status using the serial number that is printed on the box. ... show more

  • Buyer beware
Capacity: 12TB Style: 512 MB Cache
To preface my review, let me just say that I've always considered Western Digital to be my go-to HD manufacturer. I ordered 4 WD Red Plus 12TB drives to replace the current WD 4TB drives in my NAS. First of all, the packaging left much to be desired. The drives were packaged individually in their anti-static sealed bags. However, they were placed in a box, lined up front to back to each other, with no cushioning in between them (individually bubble wrapped would have been nice), pressed against one side of the box with air-pillow packing taking up the remaining room. Because of this, several of the anti-static bags developed friction holes, so the drives were no longer hermetically sealed. Secondly, the carrier dropped off the box (one of many) on my doorstep in torrential rain with no protective covering. Being home, however, the boxes were brought inside within 5 minutes of delivery. The boxes were soaked regardless, and water definitely made its way into the box with the drives. Pair that with the fact that the anti-static bags had holes, and I ended up with slightly wet drives. I took care to dry the first drive thoroughly. After installation into my NAS, the first drive immediately gave a S.M.A.R.T. warning, although non-specific. However, I hoped that since the drive was being "rebuilt" by the NAS system, I was hoping it was an interim condition that would pass once the data rebuilding was complete. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Whether it was a faulty drive, lousy packaging technique, uncaring delivery drivers, or moisture made no difference to me and all four (the remaining 3 drives were untested and still sealed, although not hermetically because of the aforementioned holes) were returned for a refund. I still need drives, but I'll look at different providers and/or manufacturers. ... show more

  • Better choice than a Green in nearly all use cases.
Capacity: 4TB Style: 256 MB Cache
Honestly these are designed to take the vibration of multiple drives and its CMR and not SMR. this is a better choice than any WD green drive. I'm using it in a Video recorder wher the purples are supposed to be used but those are SMR and not designed for multiple drive vibration dampening so it's still the right choice for a multi disk video recorder. ... show more

  • So far so good, quiet and solid.
Capacity: 14TB Style: 512 MB Cache
Bought two OWC units for long term storage onseveral Macs in our small audio and video enterprise. I loaded one of the 4 bay units with four WD Red Plus 14TB drives configured as two Raid 1 mirrored drives. The second unit was configured with just two WD Red Plus 14TB drives also in Raid 1 (two empty bay for future expansion). The assembly was quick after watching one of OWC's installation videos--which probably wasn't needed if like me you've built a computer or assembled an external drive before. As always, follow instructions for installation of both the enclosures and the hard drives. For example, wear a grounding strap when installing the drives. The units powered on immediately and I was able to easily format the units for use with my Mac computers. I chose to forego SoftRaid on either of these units--based on my specific needs at this point, but also because of some of the negative reviews I'd read about the long term cost and reliability of SoftRaid. Both units have run trouble-free for the past month. Besides long term reliability, I was concerned about how quiet the units would be, the amount of vibration I felt (both units sit on desktops relatively close to the computers they are attached to) and operating speed. The units are very quiet and relatively vibration-free. After I assembled the units and attached them to Macs on my network, I had to copy a large amount of data from several Mac and smaller external drives. This took about as much time as I had anticipated and the even with this relatively heavy amount of writing taking place, the units remained quiet and relatively cool. It's too soon to talk about long term reliability but based on reviews of the OWC enclosures and the WD Red Plus (enterprise level hard drives), I am hopeful. I will update my review if my experience suggests otherwise. I think this combination of enclosure and drives provides an effective low cost, reliable long term storage for our video and audio data. ... show more

  • Affordable mass storage
Capacity: 12TB Style: 512 MB Cache
You get a lot of storage for a good price and the noise levels are decent as far as hard drives go. Since it's a CMR drive the speed doesn't fall off a cliff either. I highly recommend it for mass storage.
