  • Dependable Storage Workhorse That’s Perfect for Everyday Use
Capacity: 6TB Style: Previous Generation
Dependable Storage Workhorse That’s Perfect for Everyday Use The Western Digital 6TB WD Blue drive has been a quiet, steady performer in my desktop setup. I use it mainly for bulk storage—photos, documents, and archived project files—and it’s proven reliable and whisper-quiet. Installation is plug-and-play; my system recognized it instantly via SATA without the need for any driver setup. Using the free Acronis cloning software from WD made transferring files from my older 2TB drive a breeze. The 5400 RPM speed isn’t blazing fast compared to SSDs or 7200 RPM drives, but it’s perfectly adequate for everyday computing and backup purposes. I’ve tested read/write speeds hovering around 150 MB/s on large files, which is consistent with its specs. It runs cool and draws very little power, ideal for systems that stay on 24/7. Western Digital’s Blue line has always been their “reliable daily driver,” and this 6TB version fits that profile well. Build quality feels solid, and there’s minimal vibration once mounted. Over several years of using WD drives in both PCs and external enclosures, I’ve found them to age gracefully with low failure rates—as long as they’re used for storage or light media work rather than constant heavy writes. A few tips: format the drive as GPT to use the full 6TB capacity, and remember this model is best suited for file storage, backups, or media—not high-speed gaming or RAID arrays (WD Black or Red drives are better for that). Bottom line: A trustworthy, quiet, and efficient hard drive for expanding desktop storage or creating large backups. It’s not the fastest, but it’s built to last and does its job without fuss. ... show more

  • Great storage drive
Capacity: 6TB Style: Previous Generation
I use this drive for storage my old one failed it was about 6 years old so i replaced it with this. Id originally bought a seagate 7200 rpm drive and it was showing in bios it was failing after transferring all my backed up data onto it. So i sent it back to new egg for a refund. This one had no issues and the weird thing is, its advertised as a 5400 rpm drive which is supposed to be slower but the transfer rate on the data actually seemed faster to me which is wierd. Anyway western digital is my brand of choice for mechanical hard drives. I have this internal and an external USB and theyre both great, very dependable and no issues at all. I dont think ill be using seagate again as i always seem to have problems with their drives for some reason. Maybe im just unlucky but thats about the 3rd or 4th drive ive had that had some major problem. WD drives seem to be workhorses and last virtually forever and they work straight out the box, no special drivers or settup needed, im just using generic windows drivers. I highly recommend western digital for any of your storage needs. I havent tried their SSDs but HDD they are king in my book. ... show more

  • Quiet and Functional Storage
Capacity: 4TB Style: Previous Generation
This is another drive that just works—no complaints on performance. A major plus is that it is very quiet compared to other HDDs I've used. Just be aware this uses SMR technology, so it's not great for heavy NAS usage, but it's perfect for standard PC storage.

  • Dependable storage drive.
Capacity: 4TB Style: Previous Generation
I've had mine since fall of 2019, and it's still doing fine. I use mine as a storage drive, nothing very demanding. At 5400 RPM, I don't think this would make a very good gaming drive. You'd experience some hefty load times. 5400 is just fine for storage though. Videos, pictures, projects, whatever. A cheaper solution for your mass storage needs. This is an internal HDD, not an external, so installation is required. It's a simple process as far as PC building goes, but if you're not comfortable opening your case to mount it and plug it in, you might want to consider an external one for your storage needs. Those just need to be plugged into an outlet, and a USB port on your computer. It is pretty easy to install even if you've never done it though. It's only going to fit in a couple places, of which you can use any of those slots. Power and data cables are pretty goof proof too. They're designed so only the proper cables will fit, and only the right way. I'm sure you can find a few dozen videos online to help you with this. ... show more

  • If you do not know what SMR is, just go ahead with CMR
Capacity: 4TB Style: Previous Generation
I used it as a temporary storage for video footage, so it is quite frequently used. After ~2 years, I noticed that some of my old videos stored on this disc are corrupt and cannot be played. I scanned it with badblocks, but it found nothing and I thought that it was a glitch. After ~5 years, same problem repeated ... so I scanned it with badblocks again, and it reported no problems again 🙄 I guess, you cannot really do heavy read/write operations on SMR drives, so from now on I am using it as cold storage with ZFS ... if you need something reliable, just go with CMR. ... show more

  • High quality and durability.
Capacity: 6TB Style: Previous Generation
I've been buying Western Digital hard drives for storage for about twenty years now, generally all fairly similar to this one. I tend to keep them for about 5-7 years of nearly 24/7 uptime before replacing them (normally because by then I've filled the drive and need a larger one). I've had these drives half-screwed into computer cases bouncing around between the backseat and passenger seat of my car on long moves across the country, rattling around through high magnitude earthquakes, and suffering through high heat and freezing cold temperatures. I've never had a single WD drive die on me in my life, and haven't come across any lemons, although I'm positive they exist. WD has my business for life. ... show more

  • Worked great to replace hard drive in Apple Airport
Capacity: 3TB Style: Previous Generation
My Apple Airport drive failed after several years. I had been sitting on repairing it for a while and decided to replace the failed drive. I bought this drive and with a little bit of disassembly effort of the Airport unit, I was able to install this new drive and get it working. The most difficult and time consuming part was cutting down the little rubber spacers inside the Airport to hold the drive properly. That's not a drive problem, though. After installation and formatting it, my Apple Airport works 100% again. What this means is that if you're looking to replace your Apple Airport hard drive, this drive will work. However, expect to spend some time cutting and reshaping the Airport's rubber spacer inserts. Be very careful working with the very tiny cables inside of the Airport as they are quite fragile. ... show more
