I was getting my hair professionally highlighted for years, but quick liking the look and wanted to go back to my natural dark brown hair. I did previously try box dye, and it made my roots one color and didn’t seem to touch the rest. My hair was orangish-red in some areas, I think from a mix between highlights that weren’t completely covered & the previous box dye. I decided to try this so that I could just cover everything and hopefully have one all-over solid color instead of a mix of colors. This seems to have done the job. It covered the areas where the box dye didn’t cover well. It seems like there is still a hint of some of the reddish dye from the previous box dye, but I think that is my own error because I bought one box of dye and probably should have used 2. I bought shade 5N and was initially a little disappointed because the first time I used it, I followed the instructions and left it on for only 20 minutes. I was afraid it would turn too dark, but unfortunately it didn’t cover my gray hairs at all. I don’t have many gray hairs, but the few I do have were still visible after 20 minutes. Later, I talked to my hairstylist, and she explained that since this product is ammonia-free, it may need more processing time to properly cover gray hair. So the second time, I left it on for 40 minutes, and it worked so much better! The gray hairs were nicely covered, the color looked natural, and it also added a beautiful shine to my hair. I used this color 5N to tone down orange highlights. It worked great and made them darker, like a reddish brown instead of bright copper. I am dark brown with highlights. My mistake not buying the volume 10 developer at first. I don't suggest trying without it, it was a waste of product. The developer did not lighten any hair that I didn't want lighter. It opens the hair to accept the brown pigment. I highly recommend a cheap mixing bowl, gloves, brush and clips. I can understand why people think this product will dry your hair out. If you use it for the recommended duration or less then rinse and seal with a conditioner, your hair should retain a smooth/soft feel.     • Solved My Grey Coverage Issue, Less Damage Than Permanent Color
Color: 5N Lightest Neutral Brown
I use 5N with a 10 vol creme developer, mixing 1:1, and it effectively covers my grey hair without needing touch-ups more often than permanent haircolor. My line of demarcation, when I can see new growth, looks more blended than it did with permanent color with 20 vol developer. Parts of my hair are nearly 100% grey now, and I have found that mixing 1:1 rather than 2:1 works best for me. My hair is less damaged since changing to this product. I always thought I needed ammonia in permanent haircolor to cover all my grey, but I don't. This blends it all with dimension. It doesn't look harsh and unnatural, like shoe polish, as some darker shades on an older person can. I'm in my 50s and started going grey at 14, so I've tried a lot of different things over the years. This is the answer for me. I'll use this from now on, as long as I have hair. ... show more

5N is called "lightest neutral brown" but that was not true for me. It turned my natural medium brown hair BLACK. It looks nothing like the color sample online and doesn't have any hint of brown. The box and tube of color were both labeled 5N, so it seems that I was sent what I ordered, but I am very disappointed with the results. I loved the ease of application, and would love to have the correct color to cover my grays, but I'm not sure I'm willing to try again with a different shade. ... show more

Color: 5N Lightest Neutral Brown
First time ordering and using this demi color product, color 5N. A review stated the color of this brand develops slightly darker, accurate. The touchups were on point and matched the rest of the hair color. The box directions were helpful, use 1:2 ratio of 1 part hair dye to 2 parts developer 10 then let develop for 20 minutes after application. At around the minute 8 mark, the color started to really show, I wiped any brown dye on the skin with water. Also used the Wella post color treatment, worth the extra couple of dollars. No frizz, no evidence of hair coloring. Always start lighter then go darker. Have fun and trust the process. ... show more
