The auto switch works fine when the load is placed on either the dryer or the EV port. My only complaint is the constant low volume chatter sound when the dryer port is being operated. Whether the dryer drum is turning or not, the Splitvolt has a chattering sound, if the dryer is turned on. (Control panel on, drum not turning.) Once the drum and heater are turned on, the Splitvolt can be heard switching the relay to the dryer port and the EV LED extinguishes. (But the chatter can still be heard) The EV port is the default mode if there is no load on either port. (Also, no chatter in this mode) The Dryer port has priority if there is a load request detected on both ports. Both ports cannot be operated at the same time, the typical dryer circuit would not handle the wattage demand. This is normal and the reason you would use this switch box. When the dryer is turned off, it switches back to the EV port. Dryer power is not displayed in Splitvolt display when running, only the EV power is shown when it is running. If this low volume chatter is normal, there should be an explanation in the manual. If I'm contacted with an explanation, I'll update this review. ... show more

I got this unit to match my dryer outlet specs (Nema 14-30, 30a). I got the matching SplitVolt 24a 14-30 Level2 EV charger - both SplitVolt units using 24amps so it would never trip the 30amp dryer breaker. So far works great. Reduces the charge time on my Jeep from 13 hours to 2.5.

This is my second unit. The first one I never even plugged in because it had something loose inside the box. It would rattle around, nope not plugging that in. My second one plugs in and works fine. I am happy with that. But it has a high pitch transformer sound when the EV circuit is enabled (so anytime the dryer isn’t running). It’s pretty loud. I can hear it 5 feet from my laundry room, little high pitch buzz sound. I plugged in my EVSE and was able to do 24 amps and charge my ID.4 at 19 miles per hour. Pretty happy with that. Just not sure about this buzzing noise. After one month of charging almost every day I can say no problems! Permanently mounted it to the laundry room wall now. ... show more

    • Inexpensive way to install an EV charger

If you have a modern dryer out let in your garage, the SplitVolt splitter switch is an inexpensive way to get a Level 2 charger for your EV in the time it takes to buy one and plug it in. If your dryer outlet is an older three-prong outlet, it's inexpensive to have an electrician change it to a 4 prong grounded outlet safe to use with EVs. The 24 amps the SplitVolt switch provides via the dryer outlet is more than sufficient to charge an EV battery overnight. The automatic switching from EV to dryer and back works perfectly whenever the dryer is in use. Use the switch with a SplitVolt Level 2 portable charger with a 4 prong plug and it's all you need. Much cheaper than buying an EV wall charger and paying an electrician to wire it to your home's electrical panel. One thing I worry about: the switch's LED status lights remain on all the time, so it's an open question for me whether that will cause them to fail prematurely. ... show more

Purchasing this splitter switch along with a Splitvolt level 2 charger for my Rivian R1T saved a ton $$$ over purchasing and installing a dedicated level 2 charger. The switch plugs into my dryer outlet, and my dryer and charger plug into it. When the dryer turns on, the switch automatically switches the dryer port on and the charging port off. Once the dryer finishes, the switches back to charging mode. Before installing this switch, I was using a 110V outlet to charge, and was only getting a charge rate of 1-2mi/hr. With the switch and Splitvolt charger, I now get a rate of 11-12 mi/hr. The quality of the switch seems to be much better than some of the "non-American" products.     • Fantastic EV charging solution

If you don't want to spend a lot of money to have an electrician install a dedicated 240v outlet to plug your EV charger into and you already use your laundry dryer outlet to charge your car, get this product. The Splitvolt Certified Splitter Switch lets me plug in both my laundry dryer and my EV charger together. The dryer takes precedence, so when it's running power to the charger gets suspended. As soon as the dryer is finished, power is diverted back to the charger. There's no risk of running both dryer and charger at the same time and tripping a breaker. For good measure, there is also a breaker built into the Splitvolt itself for protection just in case both draw power at the same time. I no longer worry about someone in my family accidentally starting the dryer when I am charging the car. Well worth my money and my peace of mind. ... show more

    • Absolutely positively works with Tesla S S70D 3 P3D- and BMW i3
****Please note in the Tesla you must turn down the power to 24A or you WILL trip the breaker in the switching device.**** I have used this in a variety of set ups with zero issues. Originally I had an ENEL EV JuiceNet Juicebox 40 with the standard SAE J1772 connector charging a BMW I3 and a Tesla Model S 70D through an adapter. (15,169 kWh lifetime on the juicebox! - still running strong) I sold my BMW to Carvana and purchased a Tesla model 3 performance stealth edition (P3D-) from Tesla. Now I use the Tesla travel charger that came with the car with a Nema 14-50 plug from Tesla and a 75 foot long 50 amp Rv extension cord from my upstairs apartment to my downstairs garage to charge the teslas. Zero issues. ****Please note IN the Tesla you must turn down the power to 24A or you WILL trip the breaker in the SplitVolt device.**** ... show more

Works as described. No hum. Didn't see a way to reset the LCD Kilowatts used. Would have been nice to reset it monthly so we can measure consumption.
