  • Solid drive at a fair price.
Style: HDD Pro(Enterprise) Capacity: 20TB
I've used Seagate IronWolf drives for NAS storage for years and have always had good results. This is no exception. The 20TB capacity is great and I was able to purchase this one at a very fair price. These platter drives are considerably less expensive than solid-state drives with comparable capacity, but also a fair bit slower and noisier. The noise isn't really objectionable, but you can definitely hear them ticking and grunting from several feet away. The sound is about as loud as moderate rain falling on the roof. SSDs would be very nice but would cost a whole lot more. For simple file storage and retrieval, these are more than sufficient. If I were running programs from the drive (like data-intensive games or video editing) these drives might not be ideal but for storing video files or other data, they work great. ... show more

  • Three Year Review with a Twist
Style: HDD Capacity: 4TB
I rarely write a review but decided to. First, I am old, like dirt. Retired as a system, network, cyber engineer a long, long time ago. How old? I started with Assembly language and the OSI model. LOL. I still enjoy playing with computer stuff though. I don't use these drives in a NAS but do use the IronWolf drives for my media server (recently rebuilt on a mini pc) from the old tower which I keep as a backup. I really like these drives. They can run 24x7 or on/off, depending on the system. I use them as my backup media across my desktops, laptops and servers via 6e wifi and also direct attached. They hang off external USB to SCSI enclosures and run like a charm. Well, so much for the background. The first three I bought in 2021. The next in 2022, another in 2023 as a replacement and now an IronWolf Pro just ordered as another replacement (7200RPM!) a few minutes ago. Real world experience is simply this. As of today, the last one bought in 2021 is showing signs of file corruption. Nothing major, but definitely getting some bad blocks. I scanned the drive and repaired it, but in my world, it is either perfect or replaced. Sure, they could probably go for another year, but I don't want the hassle. And for a few extra details. The drives did all not get the same usage. Some have one year, other three years. The one-year usage ones are running great, the three-year ones are showing errors. My conclusion? The IronWolf drives are great for the money. Whether in an on/off environment or 24x7, they give a solid three years of great performance and reliability. I decided to buy the IronWolf Pro 4TB running at 7200RPM for a little extra spin for those Ultra 4K movies. It was only 20 dollars more. They get my vote, just plan a three-year endurance unless you are running a NAS. Then it is not that big a deal. Enjoy! PS: I was going to buy SSD's, but with the crazy price increases since the first of the year, I'll stick with HDD's. They work great for my purposes. ... show more

  • I've been bitten by the IronWolf, and I'm turning!
Style: HDD Capacity: 8TB
After outgrowing the storage capacity of my previous NAS setup, I decided to upgrade to the Asustor AS5304T and populate it with some high-capacity Seagate drives. I had heard great things about Seagate's IronWolf line of drives being purpose-built for NAS environments, so I decided to go with the 8TB models to populate my 4-bay unit. Right out of the box, the solid build quality of the IronWolf drives was apparent. Installation into the Asustor was a breeze. After configuring them in a RAID 5 array, I started transferring my data over from the old drives. I've been thoroughly impressed with the transfer speeds - I'm getting those real-world write speeds over 180 MB/s. The 7200 RPM spindle speed and 256MB cache give the 8TB IronWolf a nice performance boost compared to lower capacity models. But what's most important for a NAS drive is reliability, and the IronWolf seems built to handle constant 24/7 operations without issue. Seagate's rotational vibration sensors and error recovery control features give me a lot more confidence, and given that I'm not yet hardcore enough to keep even more backup servers going, I like feeling secure with each of the drives in my current RAID 5 setup. Do NOT ignore Seagate's AgileArray technology which optimizes the IronWolf specifically for RAID environments like my 4-drive array. It's clear this drive was designed from the ground up with NAS usage in mind. Even under heavy read/write loads, the 8TB IronWolf drives have stayed cool and performed flawlessly in my Asustor. It has also meant that on the two occasions that I had an inproper server shutdown (totally user error on my part), reconfiguring without data loss was relatively quick (<3 hours compared to my old setups 19 hour record). Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase of the 8TB IronWolf drives. The combination of high capacity, enterprise-grade reliability, and great performance makes them an ideal choice for my demanding home NAS needs. If you're looking to upgrade your NAS without compromises, the IronWolf line deserves serious consideration. ... show more
