  • Reliable Drive
Used this in a RAID setup and it just worked. Install was straightforward and it fit perfectly in a standard 3.5 bay. Boot and load times were decent for an HDD, nothing crazy but consistent, and power draw never caused any issues in my setup. Ran basically nonstop for about 5 years which says a lot about the build quality. It’s a simple looking drive but it held up well and stayed reliable the whole time. Solid option if you just need dependable storage. ... show more

  • Expected Performance and Reliability
It's an affordable 3TB SATA HDD. That's it folks, the specs can be found in the documentation put out by Seagate if you need to know the exact expected speeds. They run a little faster than WD Blue, and only slightly slower than WD Black. Compare the spec sheets, it's a fun read :D These are waaaay more responsive than the 2 TB Seagate Surveillance drive they're replacing. These drives do not use shingled storage, so write times should be decent compared to NAS disks. It's a spinning disk that runs at 7200 RPM. It's certainly not the fastest thing on the market, but hey, I'm spoiled with SSD's for my boot disks. I have four of these drives. One I've been using for over a year now, the other three are going to be used for RAIDs eventually. Currently they are running backup duty. I haven't had any issue with any of them mounting correctly and taking NTFS formatting. New computer build will be getting four for a RAID 10 with a Ryzen CPU. I'll update when that happens? Ha, probably not. On a side note: I stuck one spare in a desktop as a boot disk... Oh man... I miss my SSD boot disks. ... show more

  • 8+ years of NAS storage life
I bought five of these in early 2017 with manufacturing dates in May 2017. The year is 2025. They lived in my home NAS in ZFS-Raid1 with light usage for the last 8 years. I didn't notice my fan cooling my drives failed to get plugged in when I swapped my motherboard 3 years ago. The first one just failed now in 2025. 8 years of life with the last 3 years without any real cooling, beating the expected lifespan of a NAS HDD of 3-5 years by a long shot. I silvered in much larger modern drives to replace them all before another tanks on me, but I absolutely gotta salute these drives. They performed admirably. Five stars. Go Seagate. ... show more

  • Be careful, pay attention
Good price for me at the time and replaced a dead one. Problem was that they sent me one that reported a 5400 rpm spindle in CrystalDiskInfo and SMART. None of these ever had that speed. Manufacturing defect? Or was it counterfeit? I don't know, but I complained about it and they sent a normal one.

  • Seems to be brand new, February 2019
Like the title states. Why buy. A used drive when you can get a brand new one for some bucks more. If course it depends on your usage but for me it was a no brained since I use it for a NAS. I would recommend the newer style of 3gb drive that is a a little slower but uses only half the electricity. I noticed this to late. Nonetheless I am satisfied with the drive so I ordered 3 more to replace all of the drives in my NAS. THRe “old” ones were seafarers also and gave up after only 20.000 hours. I would expect more but since I do t really know were they came from I can’t tell. They came with the Lenovo NAS. ... show more

  • Solid Drive
I use these drives in my NAS device. I changed to them several years ago because the WD drives I was using were failing about every 18 months. These drives are lasting 3-4 years.

  • Do not buy unless you're ok with risking a return
*As an update: I am further justifying my 1 star review because Seagate's technical support was absolutely terrible. Every e-mail I sent was responded to by a different person who seemed to have no knowledge of any previous communications. I found myself repeating the same things, being given the most ridiculous "support" (how to initialize a drive), and essentially received no help or explanation for why my system couldn't support the drive. Seagate offers a few exceptions for compatibility, but they say if you are using Win7 or newer, initialize GUID partition table, and are using it as a non-bootable drive, it'll work (exactly my setup). The cherry on top, after all of this with Seagate's support and I tell them I've returned the disk, they respond with, and I quote, "The drive is compatible with all systems." smh So I sent the 3 TB back to Amazon. Now I have a 2 TB drive for the price of a 3 TB, but at least it works. --------------------------- Honestly, I had no idea there is a major compatibility issue with drives over 2 TB. Unfortunately, my system was one of those that cannot use a 3 TB drive. I had to return this, but I am still writing a product review and rating 1 star because I feel this issue should be given as a disclaimer in the product description or better described at Seagate's site. After receiving the drive and installing, only ~750 Gb of the drive were available to format. I contacted Seagate's support and they sent me some material about drive compatibility beyond 2 TB... I read through all of that which suggests if I have Windows 7 or later and am using the drive as a non-bootable drive, it should work. Perfect, except it doesn't work. Then a SATA controller driver update was suggested, I researched the latest driver for my system and installed it. After restarting, the drive was not recognized by Windows at all. Next, Seagate support wanted me to install a DOS bootable version of Seatools and to send screenshots of the results. Only problem there, the .iso provided could not be mounted to a bootable USB. While waiting for a response....I decided to return the hard drive. Look, if it were free, I would expect some problems, but I paid $100 for this. I expect it to work out of the box or at least be provided with a detailed limitations listing so I realize I'd be better buying a 2TB to save the hassle. Four days into troubleshooting, I shouldn't have to figure out why tools aren't working which may or may not be able to tell Seagate why my new drive is not compatible with my workstation. The take-away here, don't just look at your PC manufacturer's specs and your operating system to determine compatibility. If your PC comes from the days before UEFI, if your PC was built before Win7 existed, if you have an Intel SATA controller, or if you have certain RAID controllers for your SATA controller, I recommend you SERIOUSLY consider purchasing a 2TB drive instead. ... show more

  • Even if their reputation is good. (Unless it's a retailer I know and trust) ...
This came in to me in a box within a box. Basically expected packaging. If you got your drive in any other form of packaging as reported by other users, you probably bought the drive from a different retailer. My order was fulfilled by Amazon. If it says it's being sold by another retailer, I wouldn't trust it. Even if their reputation is good. (Unless it's a retailer I know and trust) I ran some benchmarks using Crystal Disk Mark, and here are my results. Seagate drive NEW MODEL (The one shown here) Read: 195.1 MB/s Write: 192.6 MB/s Sandisk Z400m m.2 SSD Read: 558.5 MB/s Write: 187.3 MB/s Seagate drive OLD MODEL (32% Capacity Full) Read: 175.2 MB/s Write 138.2 MB/s In case most of you don't know, when a HDD reaches over 40% capacity, it starts to slow down dramatically. My old drive is 32% full so it's slightly slower than it should be. I'll be using this as a dedicated media storage and recording drive, and these results are very much what I need. I run Windows 10 and other programs on my SSD, my games are dedicated to my old Seagate drive, and now my media and video recordings will be dedicated to this new drive. If you're looking to buy this drive to run your Windows/Linux OS, then look towards getting and SSD for that instead, and using a seperate drive for games/media. If you can't afford the combo, see if you can get Seagates FireCuda line-up. It's built to have responsive Windows load times and keep the capacity of a normal HDD. ... show more
