5 years ago I bought this gate for the apartment I lived in for my 2 year old bull mastiff that weighed 76 pounds, and it held up great! I worried that it wouldn’t be sturdy enough just by reading other gates product reviews ending in nightmares that said their dogs easily broke through them and destroyed homes or bit humans. I searched and compared reviews of about 30 other gates with same or similar strength/durability and specs. I decided to go with this one because it had more positive reviews for the things I wanted and cared for most in a gate than the really bad negative reviews it had on things I wanted but that I could deal with assuming they were valid and weren’t written by cause of user error...like doesn’t work, hard to assemble, the latch is faulty by design, bad instructions etc. I took it with me to the house I bought a year later and was happy that it fit in a much wider door frame without needing the the extension piece it came with that I never used and was somewhere in the unpacked moving boxes still in the garage. I still had my bull mastiff at the time and ended up getting him a friend and she was a 2 month old APBT. It’s been about 5 years now having this gate that has held up very well against a now 7 year old 98 pound bull mastiff and a 4 year old 48 pound short and stocky APBT. I had always wished for another extra gate to have since my house was a lot bigger and to be able to separate the dogs conveniently indoors when I wanted to. But I just never got around to getting it. Today, I searched my history for it and bought another one because my parents have a 9 month old Chiweenie that visits me frequently and that I train. She is a very good jumper with high energy and she jumps and climbs over their gates and can get through some of them because she fits through the bars. She can’t climb or jump over this one and she can’t get through it. So here I am again buying a 2nd one and I’m sooo glad they still have it in stock and I LOVE the PRICE! Installation was easy as long as you thoroughly read all the directions and follow them. Instructions were included and easy to follow. All parts were included including the extension, and the latch is not faulty or hard to operate either, even one handed. Small kids won’t be able to open it either because there is a tug back and raise feature to the latch lock system. The surface has held up well against my dogs and no paint scratches or chips have appeared from their use on it. I’ve had to buy new tension pressure screws because the rubber molds around the end that holds against the door frame had worn off eventually falling off over the years, which does make it less secure and can scuff your paint too. But I only needed them just a year ago, but never used them because I packed them up accidentally and put the box in the garage with several other boxes that live in the garage, and couldn’t find them. So I bought these rubber protective cups to maintain the pressure tightness and to save my paint. See my pics. Neither solutions costed much either. If you ever need to buy replacements just make sure they are the same and correct length because they do come in various sizes. The picture in my review is of this gate that I bought 5 years ago so you can see how it’s held up so far and those rubber cups that I use between the tension screw and the inside of my door frame. Have had our fence up for over a year now and has worked really well. Installation was a little more involved than the typical gate that just stretches across the doorway but once we got it installed, it’s been really good. I like the gate that opens like a door and latches. Makes it a lot easier to Traverse between the two spaces. I like the extra height that it also provides. We have two large dogs and it seems to work nicely with them as well; they cannot push it out of place, which is a vast improvement from what we had before. I got this for my bedroom doorway to keep the dogs out because I have to leave my bedroom door open most of the day so that myself and my guinea pigs don't roast since during winter the heater gets kept on almost 70 and during summer the A/C plus three fans don't cool it off in here. Unless I let the dog's out myself they run wild through the house and go everywhere and get into everything (including jumping in beds). They are trained but when you let them do whatever they want, they won't listen to you and that's the problem. I was using a large piece of cardboard as a 'barrier' but that's tacky and more of a pain than anything else so I upgraded to this. It's tall enough that should my dog decide to try and jump it, she'd never make it (I'm 5'2 and standing on her hind legs she easily can rest her paws on my hip with me standing --- she's going to begin agility training this summer because she LOVES to run & jump). She also can't climb (another 'talent' of hers) because of the bars which was also important to me. The spacing should work to keep her and my Mom's 7lb Chihuahua out of my room. I know for my dog it'll work, I hope it will keep my Mom's skinny dog out but if it doesn't a quick trip to the store and picking up a $10 roll of Hardware Cloth will solve that problem AND make it to where I can use my room as guinea pig play time instead of setting up their pen! Installation was made difficult but I did it to my self as always. The first attempt I tried when I was totally exhausted (up 12+ hours) and too stubborn to *thoroughly* read the instructions. After sleep I tried again and install took 30 minutes. I wasted 10 minutes trying to figure it out myself without reading the instructions because it "couldn't be THAT complicated" and then I wasted another 5 minutes annoyed I couldn't do it without reading directions. After reading the directions, 15 minutes and the gate was totally installed and is functioning properly! My doorway is not even/level so it took some work to get it pressure mounted and set securely and to get the gate to work also. If your house is like this one where obviously nobody knew how to actually build a house (long story---house was built in 2009 btw) you'll spend some extra time fine tuning everything but the gate actually has features to compensate (thank goodness!). It is sturdy (I tried to push it over with both hands and both feet after I finished) and it maybe budged a few centimeters if that. You really have to be careful and pay special attention when tightening both top mounts. If it's even a little off on either side the gate doesn't work properly. Once you find the balance there's no problems and it works as intended perfectly! Everything needed to mount this gate came in the box, it took no tools (other then a brain and some arm work) to install it, 30 minutes of time and best of all NO HOLES IN THE WALLS OR DOOR FRAME! Add in the fact that this actually looks nice (especially compared to a piece of cardboard) and I'm happy with my purchase! ... show more
