Awesome bang for your buck, very reliable

I've had this automatic box for around 10 months, and overall it is great for the price. Sure you could spend a few hundred more on something truly lavish, but this thing accomplishes a very simple and very important goal: I no longer have to worry about cat litter every single day. I can forget for a couple days and the machine has me covered. And at first I was disappointed that it doesn't have a cover, but believe me, you wouldn't want a cover. You need to be able to see where the machine makes mistakes. As I mentioned, the machine sometimes misses things. Sometimes chunks of stuff will end up stuck just out of reach of the rake, right on the very edges of the box. So you need to give it a helping hand there, and you also need to go in to the box 2-3 times a week and clear up any clumps of litter that might be solidifying in the corners of the box where the rake doesn't really touch directly. Sometimes if your cat wants to use the exact same spot in the box all the time, you'll end up with the storage box overflowing just in that one spot, with nothing else in the rest of the reservoir. So really it's wise to attend to the storage box and help remove clumps as soon as you notice it. And there's another reason you want to empty the storage box fairly frequently: the smell inside. So yes, realistically you're going to want to empty the box every couple of days, but the fuller it gets, the worse the smell gets, and it gets really bad if you let the box fill up. I would recommend just thinking of all that storage space as 'insurance' for two-day vacations or if you forget for a while. I only noticed a couple problems. One, where the motor wasn't able to return fully to its docked position, and I got an amber light warning. I found out I had just carelessly allowed some litter to build up on the platform that the box sits on while docked, so it was interfering with the motor. And second, if you get a power outage, you will need to press the power button again manually. The machine does not turn itself on again after a power outage! Once I figured that out, it's been smooth sailing ever since. Fantastic product.

Poor and possibly dangerous design.

JUST over one month into ownership, this box is for the moment not functioning and I question whether it ever should. The carriage that moves along the edge of the box is attached to the AC adapter that comes with the unit. So part of the power cord is always moving with the unit. That doesn’t seem wise when liquids might come into play. What is worse, is the cord itself is in two parts with one part being permanently affixed to the carriage. Where the carriage cord adjoins to the cord for the wall plug, it is likely to be sitting on the ground near the cat box. Well this morning the cord got caught on something as it was moving down the track, and split apart. It looks as if the prongs were already starting to corrode anyway. Forgetting for a moment that the wall plug was still in, I went to plug the two back together and saw some nice big blue sparks leap very easily. Sad to say they won’t truly join together anyway anymore and no power could be fed to the unit. I was tempted to rewire it myself, but then I would have an even bulkier and still likely vulnerable cord dragging along. And well this things leaks. It leaks, and it is narrow, so occasionally a cat will miss and there will be just slightly less pee on the ground than would occur with not having the box at all. I will say, that this thing did get a lot of use in the last month. We have five cats, and five boxes, all of which are robots. (Yes we need another) The Litter Robot, of which we have two, is by far and away the winner. I have purchased three other robots for the upstairs bathroom, while my two little robots have chugged away sans problem. But we have one elderly cat who doesn’t want to use the litter robot, so we keep trying to accommodate her. The problem being, as every multi-cat guardian knows, is that what is new to the cats is of interest to every cat. So they were all giving it a whirl and it was getting really heavy traffic. I would empty the tray twice a day and it would still overflow. So if you have one or two cats, you can expect it to overflow after maybe two and a half days on vacation. Litter remnants get underneath easily as well and are a pain to clean out regularly. You have to really wait until the full change. The lid to the waste area doesn't stay on overly well either. The rake on this unit does not’t really get the bottom of the box well at all. I always spray with non-stick cooking spray before adding litter, but the bottom ¼ of an inch will just become one big clump within two days. I end up having to scoop this box twice a day. The rake also succeeds in breaking up some clumps into smaller clumps that just live in the box or in the rake itself. And of course, it is fantastic with smearing mess all over the side of the box and dumping clumps off of the end. I really wanted to like this box. My cats liked it, but they don’t have to clean up the mess. About an hour after it broke down, the litter robots had regained all of their lost traffic. So now I am back to finding a robot that will appeal to my elderly fussy kitty.

I've had mine for about 6 months. It's great but there are a few minor issues and one major one (which was resolved to my satisfaction.) Minor issues: 1)Litter/etc tends to fall off the top corner of the rake when it raises up, so that leaves me with some minor cleanup to do. 2) My cat tends to use the same side of the box every time so one side of the bin fills faster than the other. I need to even it out ocasionally The major issue i ran into was a bad gear. There is a key gear which raises the rake. It's made of plastic, and after about 5 months it snapped a few teeth. This led to the rake not raising at all, and the whole unit would just move forward into the opposite wall until it jammed. (It's difficult to un-jam.) This made the whole unit useless. I contacted the Pet Zone people via Email about this hoping I'd be able to order a replacement gear. They responded and replaced the gear + motor unit at no cost to me once i sent them my Amazon receipt. I installed the new unit and everything works as before. Even better, the model they sent me has that plastic gear replaced with a metal one. So it's clear they are aware of and are fixing the problem. I'm very happy with the purchase and the follow-up customer service. I'm only giving four stars because of the flaw but I'm happy with how it turned out. Be aware that the model you buy off Amazon may come with the plastic gear and may require replacement at some point. There is a 1 year warranty which is why I received my replacement part free. (Not sure if I'd have been able to buy the part if my warranty expired) The gear is the one the long end of the rake arm slips into. It begins to rotate just as the unit reaches the end of the box. Edit 1 year later: Had another problem related to the same gear. The gear on the replacement motor was metal as described above but it's held in place by plastic. The plastic broke so it led to the same problem. Customer service is excellent - They replaced the motor again, even though my warranty was expired by 4 days. It didn't take any arguing on my part. Overall the product works great and support is excellent. They just need to replace the plastic parts with more durable materials. I'll definitely keep this company in mind for future purchases.

Wouldn't buy

My first one lasted a few years before a piece on the gears broke, so we decided to replace it with the same thing. Biggest mistake ever!! It lasted less than a week. We have tried repositioning it, more litter, less litter, etc..... Nothing works. Not sure what they did to the product, can see they changed the colors, but it wasn't an improvement it was a waste of money

Painfully just fine, and will break down eventually

This will break, it’s just a matter of when, not if. In the meantime, it’ll work fine, with just a few minor issues I first got this box two years ago when it was only 120$, so for the price, I didn’t mind the flaws. With the current price, though (165$ when writing), I don’t think it’s worth the money. The biggest issue for me and my cat was that since you can’t put a liner in the box, pee would often get stuck to the bottom of the box. Not the worst thing, I would just fully dump the box every week or two and give it a good scrubbing. But, it’s not easy to clean. It is so difficult to take this apart and put it together. There’s tons of little crevices and litter dust sticks to the entire box (outside too) like crazy. The rake gets so dirty and is exceptionally difficult to clean. The second issue I noticed is the rake/motor can get stuck very easily. Too much litter or a big piece of waste stops it. Thirdly, it’s kinda loud. Visitors would often ask me “what’s the sound?” when it went off. Annoying issues, but wasn’t the end of the world for me for the original price. But the breaking. The motor, at some point, will just get all janky and stop working. First time it happened to me was right after the exchange window closed. Customer service was very nice when I asked if I could buy just a new motor piece and sent me a whole new box, so that’s a major plus. And that lasted me a good year and a half. Obviously, nothing lasts forever, but it’s seems this box could either last you only months or years. I thought I’d just buy the same box again, as it does work just fine like 80% if the time, but with the price increase, I just decided to upgrade. TLDR: Is this the best box? No, it has minor issues and will break at some mystery point. Is a decent budget automatic box? Yes, and if you want an automatic box for under 200$, this will be fine.

Pattern Name: Smart Scoop Litter Box
This is the third automatic box I've bought, and my favorite by far. I love that it comes apart so it can be washed pretty easily. The way that the motorized section rolls on top of the pan instead of it having complicated tracks like some other boxes, means litter won't get in the way or cause operation problems as easily. The assembly was quick and easy, and pretty straight forward. The operation isn't as loud as another box I've had, but isn't as quiet as the 2nd automatic box I currently own. I keep one bag in the removable trash bin and dump it out into a grocery bag when it's full, rather than switching bags every time. It does fill up quickly, I have two cats who prefer this box over the other one so it gets used about 4x as often. Just dumping into another bag means I am not going to come into contact with any excrement or litter that may have gotten on / around the bag in the tray. I love that the tray will work with regular grocery store bags so I don't have to buy bags if I don't want to. The first automated box I had was made to use disposable plastic trays which were horrible! This is a vast improvement. Funny story... my cats aren't afraid of it but they do occasionally take offense to it... they'll run over and start smacking the outside of the box when it runs... it's really funny to watch! *** update *** This box worked great for a while, but then the rake must have been bent somehow, or the motor has no way to gauge how far along the box it is, because it began to jam. The rake would move to the end and instead of lifting up, it would get stuck within the box. This happened with the "upgraded" rake you can buy separately as well. (I could not discern any visible difference between the two rakes). When the rake jams, it backs up and tries again...in a seemingly endless cycle. I had to shut it off, unlock the carriage and slide it back to get it to act normal again. Also, when the rake gets stuck it starts to bend the tub on the diagonal so the back end of it lifts high above the front. I finally had to give up on this box when it jammed so badly that after turning it off I couldn't get it to turn back on. With all the disappointments I've had with automatic boxes, I'm back to a standard pan and scoop. This box was great while it worked, but that was only a few months and not worth the money.

Bought this in October 2015 and the whole family loves it. I opened the pkg in front of our new kitten , set the machine up and let it sit in her room for a week. When I saw her playing with it I went ahead and filled and powered it up. I get a kick out of watching her watch it scoop and contain the remnants. I did not buy it for my. Last 2 cats that died 3 months ago for one peed in the corners and another would pee in the litter box and poop outside the box. This new kitten likes to keep everything in the middle of the box. An update: it is now June 6 2016 and just like so many others my unit is failing. I just left a message for the company. I hope they respond. At first the unit would not return and I would have to reboot it once a week now it is happening a few times a day so this morning I am shutting it down. I paid 141.00 total for this unit and now see it for around 80.00 this should be a warning to all wo are looking at this. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!,!,,,, Update: June16 2016. Just recieved new unit. Service rep said they replaced a plastic gear with a metal gear and I should not have any more problems..... So... In another 6 -7 months I will update if any problems.. UPDATE-AGAIN!! Please DO NOT BUY!!!! It is now september 20 and the last couple of days the replacement unit is malfunctioning!!!! AGAIN!!!! This time the scooping unit is not sitting straight and when it scoops it now hits the litter guard in the front and if i remove the litter guard the litter is all pushed onto the mat in front. WHAT A FREAKIN MESS! I will be calling the company today bit do not know what they will do to back up their product. ARGH!!!! Update again: sept 28-2016 I called left msg they got back to me and sent me a new an improved pan..... Looks the same to me as the old pan just dark grey. Now after assembly the motor wont work. So i checked plug, outlet, the whole drill and i got frustrated and had to walk away. Will re assemble in a hour when i cool down. I got it to work- for how long we will have to see. When this works its fantastic, but when it malfunctions its frustrating. I now see they have a manual model for. Under 40.00. At least I can use the old pan for dusting my chickens.

I sincerely hope first-time prospective buyers read my review--I rarely, if ever, review products, good or bad. So, please hear me out... Over the last few years, I have purchased a total of 3 of these Automatic Cat Litter Boxes. The first time I bought this product at full price ($120) and it was great; I would have highly recommended it to anyone. But after about a year or so the motor stopped working, so naturally, I bought a new unit--my belief is that whenever you buy a product like this, you can't expect it to work perfectly forever, especially when it is being used daily by your pet. The second time I bought this product it was on sale ($80). At first, it worked just as good as the previous unit. However, the motor started malfunctioning shortly thereafter (4 months); which surprised me since it seemed to be the exact same product I originally purchased. I contacted customer service after it stopped working and they replaced the motor under the 1-year warranty. It worked just fine for about two more months, then stopped all together. Long story short, I have had to contact customer service to replace the motor under warranty for my second unit a total of 3 times within a period of 6 months (which was NOT as easy as the first time I contacted them). Moreover, the motor had notably changed and was not the same as the original. Even though they have sent me a new motor(s), I realized the duration/functionality of the motor(s) decreased each time I had to call to replace it. I think the company has re-designed the motor and it is NOT as powerful as the original product. All in all, this product is a good litter box to introduce you to an automatic cleaning system in general, but I would strongly discourage people from buying this product as it now stops working shortly after purchase. I am now on my 3rd unit, and have only had it TWO DAYS. It has already stopped working, and even though I can reset it's functionality, it is not worth doing every week... nor have I found it useful to call in the warranty, seeing as it has not solved the problem. To give you some background, I have one cat and when I first purchased this product I only had to empty/clean the waste box once a week. I am now having to check/reset it daily for malfunctions. I would advise those who are interested in this product to look elsewhere, based on my experience. At this point, if you are looking to decrease your work in cleaning your cat's litter box, I would not recommend this product--it'll only cause you more headache with having to either (1) reset the motor or (2) contact customer service for the warranty.
