I've had this automatic box for around 10 months, and overall it is great for the price. Sure you could spend a few hundred more on something truly lavish, but this thing accomplishes a very simple and very important goal: I no longer have to worry about cat litter every single day. I can forget for a couple days and the machine has me covered. And at first I was disappointed that it doesn't have a cover, but believe me, you wouldn't want a cover. You need to be able to see where the machine makes mistakes. As I mentioned, the machine sometimes misses things. Sometimes chunks of stuff will end up stuck just out of reach of the rake, right on the very edges of the box. So you need to give it a helping hand there, and you also need to go in to the box 2-3 times a week and clear up any clumps of litter that might be solidifying in the corners of the box where the rake doesn't really touch directly. Sometimes if your cat wants to use the exact same spot in the box all the time, you'll end up with the storage box overflowing just in that one spot, with nothing else in the rest of the reservoir. So really it's wise to attend to the storage box and help remove clumps as soon as you notice it. And there's another reason you want to empty the storage box fairly frequently: the smell inside. So yes, realistically you're going to want to empty the box every couple of days, but the fuller it gets, the worse the smell gets, and it gets really bad if you let the box fill up. I would recommend just thinking of all that storage space as 'insurance' for two-day vacations or if you forget for a while. I only noticed a couple problems. One, where the motor wasn't able to return fully to its docked position, and I got an amber light warning. I found out I had just carelessly allowed some litter to build up on the platform that the box sits on while docked, so it was interfering with the motor. And second, if you get a power outage, you will need to press the power button again manually. The machine does not turn itself on again after a power outage! Once I figured that out, it's been smooth sailing ever since. Fantastic product.

JUST over one month into ownership, this box is for the moment not functioning and I question whether it ever should. The carriage that moves along the edge of the box is attached to the AC adapter that comes with the unit. So part of the power cord is always moving with the unit. That doesn’t seem wise when liquids might come into play. What is worse, is the cord itself is in two parts with one part being permanently affixed to the carriage. Where the carriage cord adjoins to the cord for the wall plug, it is likely to be sitting on the ground near the cat box. Well this morning the cord got caught on something as it was moving down the track, and split apart. It looks as if the prongs were already starting to corrode anyway. Forgetting for a moment that the wall plug was still in, I went to plug the two back together and saw some nice big blue sparks leap very easily. Sad to say they won’t truly join together anyway anymore and no power could be fed to the unit. I was tempted to rewire it myself, but then I would have an even bulkier and still likely vulnerable cord dragging along. And well this things leaks. It leaks, and it is narrow, so occasionally a cat will miss and there will be just slightly less pee on the ground than would occur with not having the box at all. I will say, that this thing did get a lot of use in the last month. We have five cats, and five boxes, all of which are robots. (Yes we need another) The Litter Robot, of which we have two, is by far and away the winner. I have purchased three other robots for the upstairs bathroom, while my two little robots have chugged away sans problem. But we have one elderly cat who doesn’t want to use the litter robot, so we keep trying to accommodate her. The problem being, as every multi-cat guardian knows, is that what is new to the cats is of interest to every cat. So they were all giving it a whirl and it was getting really heavy traffic. I would empty the tray twice a day and it would still overflow. So if you have one or two cats, you can expect it to overflow after maybe two and a half days on vacation. Litter remnants get underneath easily as well and are a pain to clean out regularly. You have to really wait until the full change. The lid to the waste area doesn't stay on overly well either. The rake on this unit does not’t really get the bottom of the box well at all. I always spray with non-stick cooking spray before adding litter, but the bottom ¼ of an inch will just become one big clump within two days. I end up having to scoop this box twice a day. The rake also succeeds in breaking up some clumps into smaller clumps that just live in the box or in the rake itself. And of course, it is fantastic with smearing mess all over the side of the box and dumping clumps off of the end. I really wanted to like this box. My cats liked it, but they don’t have to clean up the mess. About an hour after it broke down, the litter robots had regained all of their lost traffic. So now I am back to finding a robot that will appeal to my elderly fussy kitty.

I've had mine for about 6 months. It's great but there are a few minor issues and one major one (which was resolved to my satisfaction.) Minor issues: 1)Litter/etc tends to fall off the top corner of the rake when it raises up, so that leaves me with some minor cleanup to do. 2) My cat tends to use the same side of the box every time so one side of the bin fills faster than the other. I need to even it out ocasionally The major issue i ran into was a bad gear. There is a key gear which raises the rake. It's made of plastic, and after about 5 months it snapped a few teeth. This led to the rake not raising at all, and the whole unit would just move forward into the opposite wall until it jammed. (It's difficult to un-jam.) This made the whole unit useless. I contacted the Pet Zone people via Email about this hoping I'd be able to order a replacement gear. They responded and replaced the gear + motor unit at no cost to me once i sent them my Amazon receipt. I installed the new unit and everything works as before. Even better, the model they sent me has that plastic gear replaced with a metal one. So it's clear they are aware of and are fixing the problem. I'm very happy with the purchase and the follow-up customer service. I'm only giving four stars because of the flaw but I'm happy with how it turned out. Be aware that the model you buy off Amazon may come with the plastic gear and may require replacement at some point. There is a 1 year warranty which is why I received my replacement part free. (Not sure if I'd have been able to buy the part if my warranty expired) The gear is the one the long end of the rake arm slips into. It begins to rotate just as the unit reaches the end of the box. Edit 1 year later: Had another problem related to the same gear. The gear on the replacement motor was metal as described above but it's held in place by plastic. The plastic broke so it led to the same problem. Customer service is excellent - They replaced the motor again, even though my warranty was expired by 4 days. It didn't take any arguing on my part. Overall the product works great and support is excellent. They just need to replace the plastic parts with more durable materials. I'll definitely keep this company in mind for future purchases.

UPDATE #2: Owner for 6 years. Went through one under warranty, then had to replace the motor unit out of warranty for $35 with improved design. Not too bad, comes to about $26/year of fairly dependable operation. I've decided to try another brand since the motor unit just broke again, and it is going to take too much effort to even remove it from the pan. I never really liked how dirty the components got, the shallow amount of litter the pan accepted, and the noise. UPDATE: I had an earlier version of this unit which had known issues with broken plastic gears. They sent me a new motor unit with metal gears. I think this happened after about a year or maybe 2. It worked with my low maintenance cat ever since. Then I took in a crazy stray cat that is totally available for adoption in Socal as of this review (Jan 2019). I estimate he generates 1/2 his body weight in poo every day. I've had him a few months and the extra strain has broken my spirit, but not this litter box. I see reviews about bad motors, but not experienced this, perhaps I was sent a new motor unit at the right time before they cheapened it? Maybe there is too much load on the motor with too much litter? At any rate, the competition does not seem any better with people regularly changing motors or just buying replacements every year or so. This product has exceeded my expectations while service from the manufacturer was good and prompt. It must have been out of warranty when it broke. Although the plastic gears were a flawed design that should have been taken care of. 'd expect about 5 years of operation out of something like this and it looks like it will get there. I also expect improvements but it looks exactly the same in the photo as my older box, which is disappointing: The rake is still not great (difficult to clean, too large to scoop everything, doesn't reach bottom, doesn't groom the litter), it could use more litter depth, motor seems weak noisy and slow, and it could use a larger bin with a better lid to seal the waste. It needs to be emptied too often. 4.5 stars, which rounds up to 5 _________________________________________________ Owner for 12 months. I have four issues so far: The photosensor (I assume) doesn't seem to be able to detect my cat 100% of the time. I put my hand in front of it and trigger it. My cat uses the box and nothing happens. My cat is black as the night. The rake has 1/2 inch wide openings, way larger than any hand scoop. It also doesn't quite reach the bottom. It tends to miss a lot of little things. You can only put in about 2-3 inches of litter according to the instructions. That's not enough. Any litter brand will tell you on the packaging that you want at least 3", but they are telling you to only put in enough for one use of the box. After that it will essentially be running low on litter. This seems to be the root of many other reviewers problems as clumps stick to the bottom and cause failure. If they just designed for deeper litter it seems like a lot of issues would go away. The unit doesn't groom the litter in any meaningful way after scooping. So, the rake could be a lot better. So could the pathetic motors that all of these automatic litter boxes seem to use. It pushes the litter to the end of the box and strains the motor. The rake recently started getting caught on the end where a there is a raised plastic feature. The waste bin can get full on one side in just a couple days depending on your cats habits, which blocks any new waste from entering and creating a mess. I have a skittish kitty, and the unit is quiet enough that he just seems curious rather than afraid (bit noisy for a bedroom though). After many months he continued to be fascinated by it. I was sure to be around the first time he used it. It does mostly work, but it's only marginally better than an old fashioned litter box at ten times the price. I have bumped it up from 3 to 4 stars. I was expecting it to break just looking at the other review, but it's still working after over a year of daily use. It's good to have if you are busy/lazy/out of town.

This box is worth experimenting with if you’ve got the cash to spare. If you’re budgeting to get this box then I would say it isn’t worth it. It was helpful when it was working. Wouldn’t get everything in the litter, but that’s as expected! It did catch quite a few poops and pee ”chunks” which cut down some of our time in cleaning. It can be hard to clean at times, especially if your cat likes to pee in the corners where the rake mechanism sits. In order to get to those corners I have to wait until the rake moves out of the way. And then I hurriedly scrape the pee mounds outta there. I think the thing itself is just plain finicky. If your cat kicks the sand into piles, especially where there’s pee in those piles, the rake isn’t powerful enough to get through there and I think it eventually just messes up the motor powering the thing because it gets stuck trying to power through the piles and breaks. Our box motor thing already broke once, customer service was super nice and accommodating and sent us a replacement. But it’s already malfunctioning again (the new one) and even if we did reach out for a replacement, I’m sure that one wouldn’t last too long either. We have three cats and two boxes (one self cleaning which is this one and one regular) and we clean both regularly. Have had this powered one for less than a year, including replacement.

I have had this litter box for months now, and have even disassembled the modular parts multiple times in order to attempt to get the performance I got when I first got it. The motor now has litter inside of it, as when I shake it, I can hear the individual particles of litter. It is not a metallic clang like a screw, but softer. Let me go over the problems and benefits of this litter box. Problems: 1. Does not dig deep enough, and waste soaked litter will simply go underneath of the cleaning rake 2. Once motor has litter in it, it is impossible to remove. I have tried canned air, electric duster, shaking it at all angles near the outlet holes, and managed to get some out, but there is still some in there, affecting motor efficiency. 3. Constant resetting. Honestly, I could deal with every other problem here except for constant resetting. If the weak motor can't push through the litter, it will flash a flashing red LED, requiring manual intervention to turn off motor, and then turn it on. Manual intervention means manually scooping up the blockage, and when you don't necessarily check it every day, this can result in lots of odor. Multiple family members have commented on the smell when this happens. The reset button is inconveniently next to the motor which isn't too far away from the waste receptible. There exists remotes for other products for manual control, such as AC units, but this product requires hand manual intervention constantly. 4. Light litter is recommended, but in my opinion, it's a requirement. I first used standard clay clumping litter and it formed a sort of glue-adhesive that this machine couldn't get past. Light litter will break apart and only somewhat clump, and is easier to push by this machine. 5. Even when functioning properly, it still unevenly pushes the litter, leaving more towards the end of the litter tray than at the beginning. Benefits 1. There is less intervention than with a manual litter box, as I can usually depend on it to work if I have freshly mixed the litter and evened it out. 2. Worked OK for a month or two until the problems mentioned before came to fruition. I can only recommend this litter box if you are prepared to intervene, mix the liter evenly when the machine makes it uneven, and are available to hand reset the motor as needed.

Pattern Name: Smart Scoop Litter Box
I have been using this unit for nearly a year now. There are a few things that I have learned. I've tried multiple litters; light-weight, clumping litter seems to work best. I'm currently using the Tidy Cat with Fabreze. I've tried the "all natural crushed walnut" litter; once. It molded like crazy. Don't over-fill it! About an inch of litter in the unit is all you need. If you over-fill it, it will have a hard time pushing through the litter. Don't think that you won't ever have to clean it. The rake doesn't always get to the very bottom of the pan, so if urine has clumped down on the bottom of the pan, it's time for a cleaning. The great part is, cleaning it is pretty simple. The rake / collector unit lifts off by simply pulling the black lever under the lid. The motor comes off by unlocking it and sliding it. Everything except the motor itself can be washed, hosed off, whatever. I think I end up completely changing the litter and giving it a thorough cleaning about every 2 months; and this is with THREE CATS. I mean, let's face it. There will never be a completely automated cat litter box that doesn't need occasional maintenance; but I have to say that this one is about as close as you can get. I empty the tray every few days (mainly when I see that the lid isn't closing completely because it's full), and give it a hose down every couple of months. The only down side about this box that I have found is that while it does appear to have a sensor for when the cat is IN the box, it doesn't appear to have one if the cat is behind the mechanism. This did result in one of our cats getting briefly trapped in the unit; needless to say he never did it again. He wasn't injured, and the motor-release was right there, but it did cause me some worry about how he may have been injured if we weren't right there. I suppose that would be my biggest request for this unit; put a motion sensor on the back side of the mechanism, so cats who are a little short in the brains department (like one of mine) doesn't get trapped by the returning mechanism. Pros: Works quite well, even in a multi-cat environment. Isn't super noisy Easy to disassemble and clean Motor seems well built and rugged Cons: Overfilling it can cause it to stop working Power failure will turn the unit off; it won't clean until you turn it back on. No sensor to avoid entrapment on the return cycle of the unit Overall, this is a good purchase for the money.

I sincerely hope first-time prospective buyers read my review--I rarely, if ever, review products, good or bad. So, please hear me out... Over the last few years, I have purchased a total of 3 of these Automatic Cat Litter Boxes. The first time I bought this product at full price ($120) and it was great; I would have highly recommended it to anyone. But after about a year or so the motor stopped working, so naturally, I bought a new unit--my belief is that whenever you buy a product like this, you can't expect it to work perfectly forever, especially when it is being used daily by your pet. The second time I bought this product it was on sale ($80). At first, it worked just as good as the previous unit. However, the motor started malfunctioning shortly thereafter (4 months); which surprised me since it seemed to be the exact same product I originally purchased. I contacted customer service after it stopped working and they replaced the motor under the 1-year warranty. It worked just fine for about two more months, then stopped all together. Long story short, I have had to contact customer service to replace the motor under warranty for my second unit a total of 3 times within a period of 6 months (which was NOT as easy as the first time I contacted them). Moreover, the motor had notably changed and was not the same as the original. Even though they have sent me a new motor(s), I realized the duration/functionality of the motor(s) decreased each time I had to call to replace it. I think the company has re-designed the motor and it is NOT as powerful as the original product. All in all, this product is a good litter box to introduce you to an automatic cleaning system in general, but I would strongly discourage people from buying this product as it now stops working shortly after purchase. I am now on my 3rd unit, and have only had it TWO DAYS. It has already stopped working, and even though I can reset it's functionality, it is not worth doing every week... nor have I found it useful to call in the warranty, seeing as it has not solved the problem. To give you some background, I have one cat and when I first purchased this product I only had to empty/clean the waste box once a week. I am now having to check/reset it daily for malfunctions. I would advise those who are interested in this product to look elsewhere, based on my experience. At this point, if you are looking to decrease your work in cleaning your cat's litter box, I would not recommend this product--it'll only cause you more headache with having to either (1) reset the motor or (2) contact customer service for the warranty.
