  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Exceptional reliability, build quality, & performance: OWC, the UN-DROBO
Capacity: 0TB Color: RAID 5 HDD
Recently, I replaced my DROBO 5D and DROBO 5N2 with an OWC ThunderBay 4 and an OWC ThunderBay 8, both equipped with Dual Thunderbolt 3 Ports. The reason behind this switch was the recent announcement of DROBO's bankruptcy and my previous experiences with their 5 series. In my experience, the DROBO 5 series has had issues with enclosures, power supplies, firmware, and overall reliability. Thus, I thoroughly researched various NAS and DAS brands and ultimately chose the OWC Thunderbolt 3 series for its exceptional build quality and performance. As someone who has had a positive experience with their Thunderbolt docks, this was a significant factor in my decision-making process. My previous experience with DROBO reinforced the importance of keeping data safety simple. The OWC enclosures provide me with the necessary RAID features in a simple and efficient manner. So far, everything has been working well, and I hope it continues to be that way. ... show more

  • Would be a great product if it was reliable
Capacity: 0TB Color: RAID 5 HDD
After losing faith in one of my Qnap NAS devices when it began to fail because of the CPU flaw and the manufacturer refused to do anything about it I was looking for a new home for the 8 drives it had in it. This seemed to be a good fit since I had a system to connect it to. Transferred the data, wiped the drives, and got them loaded up into this enclosure. It worked great for several days after getting the data moved over but then came the issues. After the system had been running for about 5 days, all of a sudden it would become unresponsive. No display, not reachable by network, nothing. I'd have to kill power and boot it back up again. After this happened 3 times I decided to attach to a different computer. A few days later, same thing. With both of those systems being PCs running Windows I decided that maybe it prefers to be attached to a Mac so I tried that. Same thing. I've attached this to no less than 5 different computers of various makes and OS builds and they all would become unresponsive after running for less than a week each time. Yes, I've tried different cables and even the drives at one point. Different power management settings were also reconfigured in different ways in case it was caused by changes in system power states. This would happen regardless of if there was high IO or it was virtually idle for long periods of time. Each system this device was plugged in to would continue to run forever when this enclosure was not attached. It would only become unresponsive when this was attached. Really regretting this nearly $1,000 mistake. Should have invested that money in a different solution. ... show more

  • Overall verdict: solid
Capacity: 0TB Color: RAID 5 HDD
I bought this to replace a Drobo, which I was totally happy with, but they seem to be tanking, so I'm getting off that boat before it sinks. The hardware seems really well done, and the SoftRaid software seems . . . adequate. Time will tell how that works out. The documentation is OK, but it can take quite a bit of study to figure out what you actually need to do in any specific case. It's not entirely "plug and play". ... show more

  • So far, so good
Capacity: 0TB Color: RAID 5 HDD
Drobo died, no support, no way to buy another one, so dropped 4K, YEP, 4K on this TB-8 w/eight 18TB drives for 144 TB. Darth Cylinder Mac and drive seem to be working well, but for 4K, they had better. Customer SVC at OWC has been superb. Will follow up in a year to report function.

  • Hate to complain but heavy is the head.
Capacity: 0TB Color: RAID 5 HDD
900 dollars is a big ask for a box of sata slots interfacing to a thunderbolt connection. Multiple sata to pcie or even m.2 is the price of a couple coffees. The better part of a decade has been more than enough to recoup the RnD another company in china did, physically produced then mailed to OWC or others like them this purchased in bulk. Nothing is new or pushing a limit. From the get go only 2 lanes are being used never allowing for more than half the TB capacity anyways. Even two smaller daisy chained enclosures will be much cheaper and higher performing. Even a nvme for caching and or multi gig Ethernet utilizing the remaining 2 lanes would cost them nearly nothing but boost capabilities and performance. Luckily there’s a 5-20 dollar adapter for any combination you can think of on Amazon. U.2 10GBE Ethernet via adapters to pcie in their 4 bay works no additional drivers needed. Proves the concept is more than capable of functioning. 4-500 dollars extra is hardly justified for a larger box and a few more sata ports on the backplane. If they updated internal chipsets and controllers as availability allowed then maybe they’d have more of a leg to stand on. Even a m.2 running the latest and greatest USB4 or TB4 chipset are on the market for 60-80 dollars. I’m sure the same shop making a profit of them who makes the hardware for OWC is more than up to the task. Exploiting the spot Apple users are put in by Apple by charging the Apple level extortion price tiers says a lot about a company. Be better and the larger customer base will pay for its self. What percentage of the market is in this segment? It’s needless self imposed limitation. Also repackaging parts essentially already on hand from one box to a server chassis isn’t magic nor should a glorified enclosure with all of its limitations via 1 TB port shouldn’t be in the same price point then a actual computer or a actual NAS. Funny how most of those papers when down to a PCB all fit in a empty 100 dollar chassis. Yep power and all. Getting around 1990s era power supplies the size of a shoe box isn’t expensive or hard. A milk crate worth of space for a few power supplies is a step backwards at best. You could be the best accidentally but avoid it. ... show more
