Installed but didn’t fix the run away cooling fan. Reset everything but only thing that fixes the fan was to install fan control app.

  • DANGER - SEE UPDATE - DANGER - Do you want a trashed iMac ?
Size: Small (Cable Only) Color: Black
DANGER - READ THIS BEFORE BUYING Update- stars reduced from 5 to 1 star SEE THE PICS This is what my iMac screen looks like just over 48 hours after the use of OWC Kits. I used 2 of their thermal kits from my and my wifes iMac's. I upgraded them both to internal SSD's. My wifes iMac went fine and there were no issues. Mine also needed a fan so i bought a fan from ifixit and had to wait for it to be shipped to me so my upgrade was on hold until i got the part. So Thursday night, 12-6-18, i upgraded mine to an internal SSD and a new fan. My fan was making noise so i decided, while i had the iMac open, to replace it also. Everything went fine until this morning about 7:00 am. I had just booted up my iMac and went outside to let the chickens out and as i was coming back in, i heard a crash and saw my wife with my iMac screen in her hands. She had tried to catch it as it fell off the iMac frame. As you can see from the pics, my screen is DESTROYED. Before i addressed mine, i ran back to my wifes iMac and put clear gorilla tape around the perimeter of the display. And yes, it was loose as i could get my fingernail easily between the frame and the screen. It was only going to be a matter of time before hers fell off also . I have been working on computers for over 40 years so I'm no novice and i can read directions. I cleaned EVERY trace of old tape from the frames and screens prior to installing the OWC kits. After closing the iMacs back up, i put firm pressure with my thumb and forefinger all around the perimeter of the displays where the tape interfaces with the frame/display. They appeared to be stuck very well. BUT, as you can see from the pictures, that was short lived. Mine lasted a little more than then 48 hours before failure. As you can see in pics 11 and 12, the tape is pulled away from the frame and failed catastrophically. This tape is thin and NOT like the original Apple tape that was used during the original assembly. The OEM tape is thicker and has a foam inner layer. I suspect the foam is there to make the tape thicker and to create a cushion at the interface. So if i were you, i would still buy the thermal sensor from OWC because you can't get it anywhere else but DO NOT trust the rest of their kit. Source the tapes from somewhere else that has tapes like the OEM tape used during original assembly. So, here i sit on a Sunday morning with a iMac that has a destroyed screen over some cheap tape that was not designed anything like the OEM tape. I have gorilla clear tape running around the perimeter of both our iMacs now and i have NO IDEA where I'm going to get a 27" screen for my Late 2013 Intel iMac or how much thats going to cost. I avoided reviews of tapes that had horror stories of this kind and bought 2 sets from another seller here on Amazon because i didn't know that OWC included tapes with their thermal sensor kits. I used what came with the OWC kits because of their reputation. That was a VERY costly mistake. I think i got lucky that the cables on the back side of the display did not rip the motherboard connectors out or harm them otherwise. So, look at the pics and ask yourself if you want to trust OWC's included tapes. Buyer beware. And if you are using their tapes right now, i would put some gorilla tape in at least 4 places on your display because you never know when this will happen to you. ========================================================================================= Original review I am just a verified purchaser and was given nothing in return for this review. When i see a product and company that excels above most others, I'm willing to take the time to give them a positive review. I personally think they are over priced for what you are getting but what other hardware interface option is there ? Theres not one other than this one. So if you have an apple iMac that needs upgrading, i would only use OWC's thermal sensor and tapes. Their SSD option is all put together for you BUT, there are much better and faster drives available than what they sell. I personally used Crutial MX500 drives for my SSD's. Go to tome hardware guide and look for the SSD comparisons and you will see the OWC SSD's don't fair that well. For anyone considering this for their imac because you are replacing an internal drive to ssd or hdd, it works flawlessly. i had 2 iMacs to do. both were late 2013's that i upgraded to internal SSD's. Apple calls these late 2013's VINTAGE even though i just bought them just a little over 3 years ago. Shame on Apple for running the company into the ground. When all it take is an SSD to bring your lazy iMac back to life, why in the world would you spend $2k for a new one. I bought 1 thermal sensor only and one with the tools. if you are only doing one iMac and you don't have the tools, buy the sensor with the tools. the tools are a godsend when you start doing the job, especially the pizza cutter and the suction cups. you could just do without the sensor and run the app smcfancontroller, but i sure would not trust it. its an app and not a hardware solution. Be aware that you get a set of screen tapes to install the screen back on the frame with BOTH the sensor only and the sensor with the tools. don't do what i did and buy 2 sets of screen tapes because i didn't realize that they came with the sensors. On the plus side, i have 2 sets extra if i have to open them up again in the future. I would highly recommend OWC for all you iMac / mac needs. their products are quality, their shipping is fast and the packaging is better than most. ... show more

  • Worked Well for Me
Size: Large (Kit w/ Tools) Color: Black
I purchased this almost a year and a half ago because I was scared to do the install. I finally did it about a month ago, and I am happy with the results. I have a late 2013 27" iMac with i5 processor that ran like a dog because of a poor performing 1TB Seagate 5400 RPM HDD (I get it Apple, thin comes at a cost - heat). I used the OWC kit to replace that with a Seagate 2TB 3.5-Inch SATA 6GB/s Desktop SSHD (ST2000DX001) (Old Model) . While not as fast as a true SSD, it's a more cost effective solution (they are currently a hair over $100 on Amazon) and there is a noticeable increase in overall performance. My kit had everything that was shown in the online video, which can be seen on OWCs YouTube channel. They have a new version they just published on 02/03/2017. I followed OWCs instructions to the letter, and had the video playing on my PC while I was doing the teardown. As far as the replacement tape is concerned, I wish they had provided a lot more in the kit, as I had just enough after I made a couple of mistakes. The method I finally devised was to fold the backing along the tape strip and then use that as guide to line up against the edge of the iMac's case. I have confirmed the tape is the same brand and type as used by the Geniuses in the Apple Store when they disassemble your iMac. My only other recommendation is to be very careful with the screen. The glass is so large it can bow when reassembling the unit. Once I got the glass back on, it now looks like it was never taken apart. I then did a clean install of macOS Sierra and hooked my old drive up to an Anker USB 3.0 to SATA 3ft Converter Adapter Cable for 2.5 inch/3.5 inch Hard Drive Disk HDD and SSD, Power Adapter included and used the Migration Assistant to get my files and settings onto the new drive. A month in, everything is snappier and the computer actually comes back from a restart in under a minute. Some ephemera - When I was considering an SSD, I went on OWC's site and got on with live chat. I asked if I needed to use the heat sensor with an SSD, which doesn't get as hot as a comparable HDD. Chat said I have to use it, so I did a little more digging and I've confirmed that the circuitry locked up in the black connector is not only a temp sensor but also contains the EPROMS that tell the iMac the drive you're using is an Apple certified unit. Newer drives now contain the firmware to get around this issue, but my wife purchased the SHHD for me for Christmas 2014. I would have had to use the sensor anyway as the new drive is mechanical, but if you've purchased an SSD prior to 2015 that you wish to swap in, use the temp sensor. Also, this version of the 27" iMac (iMac14,2) doesn't have the eMMC slot on the logic board, so I couldn't get, say, a 64GB eMMC drive to do the Fusion Drive upgrade. On the plus side, Seagate now sells an SHHD that has the same SSD size, but uses a different schema for reading/writing data called shingled magnetic recording, or SMR. This allows for thinner platters and faster reads/writes over time. Yes, for you non-Seagate fans out there, Western Digital does make something they call a dual drive, which is a standard HDD and an SSD in the same sandwich, however, on Macs it is hard to install. They're also as expensive as a standard SSD for the same capacity. The Seagate solution just works and makes the Mac faster over time. In other words, your fifth boot will be faster than your first boot. ... show more

Amazon keeps asking for a review so here it is. I purchased this in-line sata connector with thermal sensor to be able to upgrade the HDD on a 2012 IMac to a SSD. Apparently without the thermal sensor the system will not remain stable and the cooling fan will spin at maximum velocity causing it to suck in all surrounding matter and fusing it together with the help of Apples fusion drive technology at speeds close to that of light. Once critical point has been reached everything surrounding the Mac will become negatively charged in the blink of an eye and not before long, your 27” iMac will approach temperatures of absolute zero allowing it to shrink down to a nano speck sized particle known as a Nanomac. The Nanomac particle eventually goes Macnova once the fusion drive gets to a state of refusuion and simply refuses to abide the laws of thermodynamics, slapping entropy in the face and imploding with massive force, the Macnova turns into Macgyver and can only be stopped with a Microsoft Zune detector. With all that being said, the connector arrived in time and I’m thankful such products and services exist to help simplify upgrades. ... show more

Easy install but the cables are too long. Creates unnecessary tension on the cables to get them to stay in place.
