  • How a dark brunette gets Manic Panic color without bleaching
I ordered Cotton Candy Pink a while back from Amazon, however I normally use Passion Red, Hot Hot Pink, or After Midnight Blue (once). I dye my naturally brown hair with Manic Panic dyes only because they are semi-permanent. In order to get the color, I wash my hair using a harsh dish washing soap like Ajax or regular soap like a Dial bar twice to strip it. No conditioner. I then dry my hair on high and straighten it on high without heat protector. Why? To get it as DRY as possible without straight up burning it. Any products will block the dye. Don't worry, Manic Panic dyes will rehydrate your hair. I then take my dye of choice (Passion Red is my favorite, it fades nice!) and cover my hair fully with dye, applying it thickly so it has a lot to soak up. 9+ inch thick/12+ inch thin hair may need more than one jar for the right affect. (I have very thick hair and when I started dying it reached my lower back! Two jars!) Leave the dye in at least 9 hours, preferably 12 depending on color. More than 12 may be the best thing to do, but the dye is harder to was out after 12 hours. These dyes are free of harsh chemicals so they are safe for you to leave in. I usually do this at like 7 PM, then cover my hair with a shower cap to sleep. Another tip I read from the Manic Panic website is using the hair drying for 5 minutes every hour or so (before I go to bed.) The heat is supposed to help. When you wash your hair for the first time, try to use cool water. Don't use shampoo the first wash. You can use conditioner after you have washed your roots good! I find that leaving it in so long means I spend a while getting the excess out. Remember, an unnatural color on natural hair is not going to last as long as it would on bleached hair. After the second wash it begins to fade. The longer you left the dye in, the less it will fade between washes. I try to go 2-3 days without washing it the first two weeks to keep it longer. Tips for not dying your face, bedding, etc.: * I purchased a cream from Sally's that claimed to protect your skin from dyes. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't(?), but it was cheap ($2) so not a complete waste if your forehead may not be pink for 2 days. * In case it leaks from the cap while sleeping, place a dark towel on your pillow or buy a dark case. * When you wash your hair there may be some residue left after the first wash and when you towel dry it you find your nice white towels are now pink! If bleach within an hour it should save the towel, but after that it's ruined. My Individual Color Experiences: * Cotton Candy Pink did not turn out well. It is a light color and will best be achieved in bleach hair, I think. I left it in 12 hours. Don't follow my instructions and use this color if you're a brunette, it's tacky. :\ And it faded fast! * Passion Red has had the best results for getting the right color and lasting. I left it in 12 hours. It also fades to a natural looking red color on brunettes before finally returning me to my roots! Last day of red was about 3 weeks later. * Hot Hot Pink did not get completely the right shade, as should be expected with a pink in brown hair. I left it in only 9-10 hours though. It was a pretty pink and lasted as long as Passion Red. * After Midnight Blue was gorgeous! Lasted weeks! And your brown hair is permanently green afterwords. Lol. I'm so glad I only streaked it in two places. I think I only left the dye in for 5 hours? But it's been a while back. A year later and a new hair cut, I no longer am asked randomly when standing in the sun, "Hey, Wait... did you dye your hair green?" Hope this helps! ... show more

  • Didnt work at all
This did not work. I tried to dye my natural blonde hair purple (Electric Amethyst) at the top half and this Cotton Candy pink at the bottom half. I left all the hair dye in for about 45 or more minutes and then applied heat and rinsed with cold water. The pink completely rinsed out, there wasnt even a trace of pink left. The purple looked like a faded blue/gray/silver color and was only on a few sparse sections of hair. It looked very bad so we decided to mix the remaining dye and apply it to my whole head as one color and let it sit overnight (while I slept). In the morning, I applied heat and rinsed my hair with cold water and there were absolutely no traces of pink in it at all. A thin layer of sections of hair looked a gray purple, but mostly my whole head just looked darker and grayer than my natural blonde color. After one shampoo with cold water some of the purple disapeared but more of my head looks like the darker color... It doesnt look good at all :( also I wasted lots of money. ... show more

  • So, so, SO pink - if you do it right.
First: UPDATED REVIEW YAAY! I love this color. It's VERY pink. Second: Forgive me for my CAPS, I just want to make sure I share everything I learn with people who were beginners/wanting to try like me, but not professional hair stylists. My natural hair color is a medium-to-light brown. In order for this color to even remotely show up in your hair without bleaching it--you're going to HAVE to have naturally very, very light blond hair. Think platinum blond. Super light-ash blond. Things to note before even buying this hair color: --EVERYONE has different hair types. Everyone. Some people have hair that just soak up color fantastically and suffer little damage for it. Some people have really hard to dye hair. Some people have a mix of both. Some people's hair is so delicate you can't look at it sideways without it breaking. BEFORE you travel into the world of crazy hair colors: KNOW WHAT TYPE OF HAIR YOU HAVE. *ESPECIALLY* if you are not a hair professional/self coloring. --If you just want a fun tint to your hair, skip the next note I'm making... --If you want this to be OMG PINK!!11! and you have hair that is not naturally white/plat blond/very light ash blond, you're going to have to bleach. Either your whole head or the ends for dip dying or strips or whatever you want. --Bleaching on sensitive/fussy hair types can be EXTREMELY DAMAGING. Be careful when self bleaching if you are not a professional/experienced. --To get the best results that last longest YOU MUST LEAVE THIS IN FOR MORE THAN 4 HOURS. OVERNIGHT AND LONGER IS BEST AND REMEMBER: IT IS A VEGETABLE DYE. IT WILL NOT DAMAGE YOUR HAIR LIKE CONVENTION DYES/BLEACH. USE HEAT TO HELP SET COLOR USE A BRUSH TO APPLY. START AT TIPS OF HAIR AND COAT TIPS THICKER THAN YOU WOULD ROOTS. WHY? YOUR SCALP IS HOT, BABY. HEAT HELPS SET THE COLOR. IF YOU HAVE A REALLY HAWT SCALP, THE COLOR AT YOUR ROOTS WILL BE BRIGHTER THAN AT THE ENDS. DO NOT RUSH. DO NOT SKIP SECTIONING HAIR AND APPLYING IT BIT BY BIT. DO NOT BE IN A HURRY IF YOU WANT GOOD COLOR. WASH YOUR HAIR IN THE COLDEST WATER YOU CAN STAND DO NOT USE SHAMPOOS WITH SULFATES AS IT WILL STRIP THE COLOR FASTER WASH SPARINGLY, INVEST IN A DRY SHAMPOO. THE LESS YOU WASH, THE LONGER IT WILL LAST SAVE A TINY PALM FULL SIZE OF THE COLOR AND ADD IT TO YOUR CONDITIONER. CONDITION HAIR NORMALLY BUT LET CONDITIONER SIT IN LONGER THAN USUAL. WILL HELP THE LONGEVITY OF YOUR DYE. Sorry for all the caps! I just want to make sure I can catch some of the beginners who were like me, before, and didn't know these things before starting working on their hair! And now! The Positives: Beautiful color. It will be very bright the a) longer you leave it in and b) the lighter your hair is and c) the more absorbent/reactive your hair is to dye. It's easy to pastel-ize this without expensive add ins. You can make it a very light, light rose by only letting this sit 1-4 hours (again, depends on your hair. But if you leave it in shorter = lighter hair color. Use a small quarter size touch of conditioner and mix it in with the color to help make it much lighter. I left this in for 10+ hours after bleaching my hair. It did not harm my hair at all. Cons: As a medium/light brown haired girl, I HAD to bleach my hair for this to work. I used their 40 bleach kit in hopes of getting super light hair. I DID get super blond hair!....At my roots. My ends were brassy/yellow and I did not use a toner and thus, it was my OWN fault that the ends of my hair were barely pink while my roots where OMFGPINK!! When I re-bleach and re-dye my hair, I will apply this new lesson-learned by focusing the bleach (and eventually after bleach the dye), more thickly on my ends and thinner/less on roots. It gets everywhere. Eeeeeeeeeeverywhere. Put newspaper down on the floor, cover your bath tub/sinks/surfaces, wear clothes you don't care about. If you are impatient, in a rush, sloppy with applying it, do not section your hair and apply it correctly: you're gonna have a bad time. It's a very particular kind of dye that works best with people who either know what they are doing or are willing to put the time and effort to apply it correctly. (Or, if you are a professional.) If you use shampoos with sulfates, warm water, shampoo daily/every two days/three days etc, the dye and the color will fade super, super quick. Invest in a good dry shampoo and gird your loins for cold-as-you-can-stand shampooing to keep it looking fresh. TL:DR: Buy IT yes! Good color, yes! However, vegetable dyes/crazy color dyes take a LOT of work to dye properly and maintain. If you want to just slop it on and expect to have nice, brilliant hair for months without being careful about this: don't believe anyone who tells you having bright pink/green/red/yellow/purple/what-have-you unnatural hair color is EASY to maintain. It's not. <3 ... show more

  • fun product but it doesn't last, washes out WAY too fast.
first thing I have pretty light ombre hair, this dye will not work if you're hair isn't light. I mixed it with their pastelizer and has AMAZING results (i have included a picture) while the dye worked I had to do it twice once with the recommended time (did not work at all and washed out in a day!) but the second time I left it in for 3 hours and it worked amazingly. the problem I had is my hair isn't as light as it could be so its already fading a bit in my 6-7 part of my ombre but is clinging heavily to the 9-10 lightened tips. it makes a really pretty sunset effect. basically this dye is a nice change of pace but its not a long term ideal. it was fun for the few DAYS and now a week later its still pretty fun, but it has hardly lasted even with cold water rinses washing only every other day and using no sulfate shampoo. I know all my friends have used manic panic and had really good things to say but this isn't for me im not high on upkeep and this would take a lot of time redying and so forth every week or two weeks tops. Its a good idea if you want to try different shades and see if something works for you. I will say if you have damaged hair (like I do from bad over processing with bleach) its a nice way to get you kicks and the dye itself is VERY moisturizing. ... show more

  • I liked this product a lot
I liked this product a lot, I really wanted to try pink hair since I always seemed to get compliments on the pink wigs I wore with my costumes. The dye did not last in my hair long. I just wanted to add a few highlights and I tried to add conditioner to it to make it a more pastel color (as seen in various DIY videos). It did not really come out pastel, I ended up washing it out and putting just straight regular dye in. It looked light pink for several days but now it has pretty much washed out. What is left in my blonde hair now is sort of light orange highlights that actually look pretty natural and give my hair dimension. I got compliments on my hair at work today and I am happy with the initial color, but it does wash out and you are left with hair that is stained. This time it just happens to look good on me so I am satisfied. ... show more

  • Maybe she’s crazy? Maybe it’s quarantine? Maybe she’s crazy? Maybe it’s quarantine?
Quarantine Hair! I used Manic Panic Hot Pink with just a couple stripes of Ultra Violet & I am pleased as punch with the results. I followed the advice of many here but in case some one stops on my Troll/My Little Pony Hair & think “that’s for me,” here’s my two cents... I have course, just-past-the-elbow length, thick hair. I have been neglecting my hair for a while & was debating going in for the big chop when the lockdown started. I had about 5 inches of med/light brown/gray hair roots & golden blonde hair below that. (I mentioned neglect?) No bleach. I used two tubs of hot pink and half a tub of the ultra violet. After testing a few strands of my hair, I realized the Ultra Violet really had to be slathered on thick because it washed out so easy. I sectioned my hair to try and prevent patchy clumps. I painted on the Ultra Violet where I wanted it on my hair, covered and wrapped it in Saran Wrap, then rolled it up and pinned it in place. I coated hot pink over everything else. I soaked it! Just poured it on like gravy over a dry Thanksgiving turkey! I worried about getting low so I did several sections mixing the hot pink with conditioner to stretch it out. I forgot to put Vaseline around my head as you can see by my pink ears. Occasionally I’d pause between sections and blast my pudding covered locks with a hot hair dryer. When all my hair was covered and I was scraping the jars for more, I then treated myself to a nice head massage, really worked it in, dye that scalp! Then I bundled it up & plopped it all into a plastic shower cap. I used the hair dryer a little more. I was tired after all that work & went to bed with a towel covering my pillow. You know those old towels that you’d get rid of but they’re too old/ratty to donate so you use them on the dogs whenever they go out in the rain? Those are the towels you want to use whenever you shower! 7 hours er so later, after taking care of the dogs, feeding the family, & copious amounts of coffee, I went in to survey my art. It was as squishy & still wet from applicantion. I rinsed it with cold water only as per some other brilliant lady’s suggestion and watched my tub look like a unicorn was giving birth. (Scrubbing bubbles - 5 star review right there! - got it all out with no scrubbing!) I dried my hair and ooohhhhhh the fabulousness!!! This might have started a fashion color addiction. An odd addiction for someone to start in their 40’s. It’s been two weeks. It rinses our more color when I shower but it’s still really bright. Since the quarantine, if I’m being honest, showers aren’t big on the to do list. So maybe every three days. I’ve been using some kind of tea tree shampoo (before Covid 19, my kindergartener catching head lice was my biggest worry...ah good times) But I digress. It’s a head turner! I about snap my neck every time I walk past a mirror. I don’t get out much. It’s like having a colorful stranger in my house. When I do go out, now my mask feels more like a poorly thought out, super hero costume. You can see shoppers looking at me, just wanting to bust those social distancing rules to see if they’ve discovered some kind of toilet paper hunting fairy. Seriously though, I’ve had serval little girls utter phrases like, “Wow!” And “Ohhhh, so pretty!” As they point to my hair, so yeah, I’ll give it a toss. Just living the inner 8 year old’s dream! I’m very happy with my hair. ... show more

  • Not a good color- it completely washed out in one shampoo.
I put this on bleached hair, level 12 (very pale, almost white blonde). The hair was in decent condition. After a test strand on dry hair, I determined that if the hair was diluted at all with water, the color wouldn't show, so I applied it evenly to dry hair. I left it on for an hour under a cap. It did not retain much color after rinsing, and the color was not even. After one shampoo several days later, it mostly washed right out. I love Manic Panic usually, but they need to re-work the formula for this cotton candy pink. It needs darker color pink so it can survive a shampooing! This is way too costly to be a wash-out color! Not recommended. ... show more

  • Do not buy cotton pink manic panic color cream!
I used Manic Panic bleach to bleach my hair and it worked so well, I expected more on this color cream. Sadly, it did not work at all. Like for a day or so, the color slightly (really slightly) appeared, (although it was hard to tell) but like the day after, no body found out that this was supposed to be pinkish hair. Well, so I thought maybe the time wasn't enough. so this time, I stayed with the color cream on for 4 hours. It still did not work at all. I just wasted my money, I will never buy this again. Do not buy cotton pink manic panic color cream if you want pinkish hair, unless you are dying to waste money but you have nothing to buy. ... show more
