Description

The Lodge Cast Iron 12-inch Skillet is a multi-functional cookware that works wonders with slow-cooking recipes and all your favorite foods. Pancakes, eggs and bacon somehow taste extra hearty when cooked in a heavy cast-iron skillet. Fry up a mess of cast-fish, roast a chicken, or bake an apple crisp in this generous 12-inch pan that features two handles for heavy lifting, and two subtle side lips for pouring. The skillet features the Boy Scouts of America logo on the bottom of the pan and measures 12-inch x 12-inch x 2-inch. Cast iron loves a campfire, a stovetop, or an oven, and can slow-cook foods without scorching. It retains heat well so you can sear meat at higher temperatures and will keep your delicious meals warm for a long time. Whether used in a kitchen or camp, theses virtually indestructible cookware should last for generations. Made of cast iron, this Skillet evenly distributes heat from the bottom through the sidewalls. Sporting a stylish black color, the cast iron Skillet looks good in most kitchens and it doubles up as an excellent source of nutritional iron. The black patina given to the cookware by the factory seasoning process is, in fact, vegetable oil that has been baked into a piece of cookware that has emerged from an individual sand mold. This coating of oil is a functional application and not a cosmetic application. The cookware is hanging as it rides through the electrostatic sprayer and commercial conveyer ovens at very high temperatures. This allows the oil to penetrate deeply into the pores of the iron which creates an easy release finish. As a result of this process, you may see a blister or bubble of oil at the southern-most point or at the end of the handle of the cookware piece. If visible, it will rub or flake off with your finger, leaving a brown spot. Don’t worry, it’s not rust but a seasoned spot that is brown, indicative of the varnish stage of seasoning. As a matter of fact, this is the color of home seasoned iron until it has been used several times. The brown spot will turn black with use. While the skillet comes pre-seasoned to prevent food from sticking, it works best when sprayed or lightly coated with vegetable oil before use. After cooking, we recommend cleaning with a stiff nylon brush and hot water. Using soap or the dishwasher is not recommended, and harsh detergents should never be used. Towel dry immediately cleaning and apply a light coating of oil to utensil while it is still warm. Cast Iron, like your grandmother used, still ranks as one of the best cooking utensils ever made. It gives you a nearly non-stick surface, without the possible harmful fumes generated by preheating chemically treated nonstick cookware. The American- based company, Lodge, has been fine-tuning its construction of rugged, cast- iron cookware for more than a century. Pancakes, eggs, and bacon somehow taste extra hearty when cooked in a heavy cast-iron skillet. Cast iron creates superior heat retention, heats evenly, and loves a campfire, unlike flimsier pans. Fry up a mess of catfish, roast a chicken, or bake an apple crisp in this generous 12-inch pan that features two handles for heavy lifting, and two subtle side lips for pouring. While the skillet comes preseasoned to prevent food from sticking, it works best when sprayed or lightly coated with vegetable oil before use. Whether used in a kitchen or camp, this virtually indestructible pan should last for generations. The skillet, which includes the Boy Scouts of America logo, measures 12 by 12 by 2 inches and carries a lifetime warranty. --Ann Bieri

  • sturdy
Heavy and so easy to clean with hot water and brush only. Dry completely.

  • Good product, great service.
It arrived with a broken handle. As you can see in the picture, the handle is a little samll for a heavy skillet like this one. But no problem, I packed it up, returned it, and a replacement was received considabily fast! (for super saver free shipping, Amazon probably lost money on this purchase for sending the heavy skillet 3 times (original, return, and replacement). Great service Amazon! I had no experience using cast-iron cookware prior to this one but I consider myself and pretty good cook. I did a lot of reading and research on cast iron, and gave this a try. It works great! The pre-season coating worked as promised. I use it to prepare steak mostly and the result was nice. I am still experimenting and adjusting cook time as this piece works differently than any other cookware I had before, but I like what it can do so far. I have seen the same skillet (except for the boy scouts logo) selling cheaper at Walmart. But for something that heavy, I can understand the extra cost even just for shipping. I have not seen one with the boy scout logo anywhere and I think it looks a lot more handsome that the regular one. Combining the 2 factors, I think the extra few dollars was well worthed. Ever since I have the skillet, I am constantly watching for good steak on sale from the local georcery so I can do more (rewarding) experiments. ... show more

  • Superb!!
Bought this cast iron skillet some years ago and could not be happier. It comes preseasoned but that seasoning doesn't last long. I had to un-rust the skillet and reseason a few times but it was totally worth the effort. Now it cleans like a dream with little more than a soapy rag and cooks SO well. This pan has become a staple in my house and will cook anything. I can't even remember what I used before. I know I sound like a raving fool but this really has worked out well for me. The Boy Scout emblem is nice but I think I initially chose this skillet because it was the only one that was part of an Amazon promotion: buy 3 get 1 free in cookware. I bought a lid to go with it and a couple of other cast iron items included in the promotion. The pan is heavy as most cast iron cookware tends to be but I'm so used to it now. I wouldn't trade my cast iron cookware for anything. So glad I upgraded. ... show more

  • Works as advertised. Great in the oven.
Shopped around and a good price, made in America. Don’t camp, use in kitchen. 1st time iron pan user, following the care instructions, and works as advertised. Food easy to clean off and works well in the oven. I seasoned it even though already seasoned. Good size. Robust thickness and no warpage or rust thus far. Keep it oiled. ... show more

  • Great pan
This is a great cast iron skillet. Very heavy and it just feels like a solid piece. The only complaint is, the handle could be a few inches longer. It’s a little hard to hold with food in it, combined with its weight.

  • Lodge is great, and pre-seasoning helps a lot
Lodge is great, and pre-seasoning helps a lot! You'll still likely want to pre-season with fresh flax-seed oil yourself, but this gets you going. My only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the Boy Scout logo make oiling up the bottom after each use a bit of a pain. Shame on me for trying to save a few bucks by not getting the Lodge version w/o the logo. Don't you make the same mistake ;-) So maybe it's really me that deserves a demerit :-) ... show more

  • My second Lodge!
My second 12" cast iron. Ordered in the morning and got it before noon! Thanks to Amazon Prime!!! My first Lodge lasted me over 10 years and I enjoyed cooking with it a lot. It's so heavy duty that Amazon shipped my second Lodge in a white plastic bag without any stuffing/protection, and it arrived with no problem! With cast iron, seasoning is the key and you are good to cook. Looking forward to another 10+ years with my new Lodge cast iron! ... show more

  • Great value
If you're looking for an affordable cast iron skillet, this is a great choice regardless of whether you care about or are a Boy Scout. The pan is very well cast, a good heavy feel and it heats up fast, evenly and hotter than my other steel/copper core pans. I plan on grinding the inside down to a smooth surface and re-seasoning to give it the ultimate non-stick capability. ... show more
