One thing I've learned over years of dying my own hair with box dye is that it often comes out extremely saturated or dark on me at first, and then fades after a wash or two to be the color on the box. My hair is med-high porosity, which is likely why this happens. The thing about this particular color (5.5AM Medium Copper Brown) that was a bit alarming was just how dark my hair got, it was dark dark brown, almost black. I was able to stay calm though, and sure enough, as always my hair became a beautiful copper color after 2 washes. Before switching to this color, I was using L'Oreal's superior preference 6R Light Auburn. I switched because although I loved the initial color of my hair, I felt like as my hair faded it would turn too light an orange. The Medium Copper Brown doesn't seem to have this issue, it's been 3 months now and my roots are definitely showing but the dye is still a beautiful copper color. My only complaint is that the dye is rather runny. I have seen others say the same thing, and it does make it difficult to know if your hair is saturated. I can see how it would be easy to miss spots or under saturate your hair because of the consistency of the dye. If you are dyeing your hair for the first time, or struggle with this, I would recommend the L'Oreal excellence creme line instead. The formula is much thicker and almost all colors in this line are available in that line as well.

This is the first time for me to use this hair color, I am familiar with the "excellence cream" from the same brand. I have always used the dark blondes and browns. But this time I wanted to go "read!" I did some research first about what shade to start with, I have cool colors in my fair skin tone. I decided on a dark mahogany auburn, so I ordered 2 boxes. My first application covered pretty good, but I have very long hair, so I decided to do a second application after one week. I have been very happy with the results! I am very happy with the dark brownish auburn shade. Even my naturally red headed sister really liked it. So if you have cooler/pink tones in your skin, and you want to go Auburn, I highly recommend this product.
