The first or two loud suction sounds will get you to jump. But once you get used to it, it will work. Don't let go of the button until you point it somewhere to catch the melted metal! Worked to repair a burnt fuel pump relay.

I'm pleasantly surprised at how well this works. Yes, it's a bit clunky, and you need to be mindful about not releasing the button until you have moved the tip to a receptacle that you want to release the solder into. But, it's way better than solder wick, and far less clunky than holding a soldering iron in one hand, holding a manual solder puller in your other hand, and holding your PCB in your teeth. This thing is not for production work, but for the price it's a great hobbyist tool. Hopefully it will last a while. Two things I've noticed: give it a couple of extra seconds before hitting the button, to make sure it melts the solder on both sides of the board, and have a pair of pliers handy to snug down the tip once it heats up the first time (or maybe every time - I don't know whether expansion and contraction will cause the tip to loosen every time you fire it up). ... show more

    • Made my day a lot easier
I specifically bought this to remove a pair of 24-pin socket headers from a project. Desoldering a component with two or three pins is easy, but 24 is a long, tedious job. Using this tool I was able to very quickly desolder almost all the pins. The only place it didn't work was on some pins that were very close to a heat-sensitive part (the nozzle tip on this is about 1/4" diameter), so I used a regular iron and wick on that. When I first started using it, one click of the suction button would result in one cycle of the suction being activated. After a few minutes, it took on a bit of a 'stutter', so that one click generated several suction pulses. I don't know if that was an issue with the device, or with how I was holding it, or what. It still worked fine, despite this. I recommend using some sort of eye protection with this. While most of the suction cycles worked as you'd expect, sometimes it would generate an outward splatter of hot solder across nearby areas of the board. Easily cleaned up with a thumbnail. And hey, any time you're desoldering using any method, you're going to need to do cleanup on the board when you're done. So in my brief experience so far it isn't a perfect tool, but it's a pretty good tool, and it handily did the job I bought it for so I'm happy with it. ... show more

    • Good for large components only, no small tips
This could be a good tool EXCEPT it comes with three tips that are ALL the same size. The tip holes are about 2mm, so it's not very good for dual inline ICs, pretty common devices, only for large leads like giant capacitors, resistors, and other things that you don't really need a desolder tool for anyway. It would be much better if it came with three different sized tips and if they sold replacement tips in different sizes. As is, it's a waste of money and time, IMO. ... show more

I needed to replace a USB B port. My first attempt with a de-soldering wick failed miserably. So I picked this up. It worked great on the first try! Pro's multiple heads with different nozzle sizes Good suction Great heat Straight forward and easy to use Con's Binary single action (pressing the button sucks, releasing the button purges) Suction action can be a little violent. Your hand may move if go do not have a strong grip. Please note that my 4 star rating does not mean there's anything wrong. I do not believe in 5 stars for just a good product, and neither should you. A product that does what is says at the average price is an an average product, That's 3 stars and there's nothing wrong with that. If everything is 5 star, then there's nothing actually great out there! 1 Terrible, immediate return 2 Works, but is disappointing in more then one way 3 Works as described and is priced fairly 4 Either works better then described, or Works as described but at a better price. 5 Combination of works better then described, has extra value/features, Top tier product, amazing value for money. ... show more

    • Tube part started getting red hot like it was about to blow up.
Worked decent for a while, recently it started spitting solder back up, no issue there just needs to be cleaned. However, while working on my last project I could see the whole metal tube part started getting red hot, like really glowing bright. I immediately unplugged it and let it sit on the driveway to cool off before the going to the trash. Obviously never going to use it again. I'm only going to be buying quality tools from now on. Stuff like this isn't work cheaping out on. I think the device is unsafe and if I walked away to get a drink or something, who knows what wouldn't happened.     • Should have bought this long ago
I do a lot of electronics repair work. And that usually means desoldering components to replace them. I typically used solder wick and a desoldering “pencil”, neither of with worked great for larger components or ones with several pins. This desoldering tool is awesome! When it arrived I tried it out by attempting to desolder a few eight pin relays. In less than a minute I had two relays off the board. Fantastic! The top does jump a little when you press the button but it’s not unmanageable. It heats up in a couple minutes and included extra three replacement tips. I wish I had this tool years ago! We’ll see how it holds up over time but it seems rugged enough. ... show more
