I want to preface this review by saying that I have never liked electric can openers and even refused to have one in my kitchen; I much preferred the non-electric hand turned ones. However, as I have gotten older and the arthritis has become increasingly painful in my hands, it has become sufficiently difficult and almost impossible for me to operate the old style hand crank can openers. So like it or not, I had to get an electric one. I evaluated multiple options, read multiple reviews, and watched multiple videos finally deciding on this one which I might add, I found most impressive. I did not want a battery operated model which either required batteries or needed to be recharged. I especially liked the fact that the cut was made under the rim on the outside and not inside thereby eliminating any sharp edges. I finally hit the purchase button and bought this Hamilton Beach model. The can opener is tall enough to accommodate taller cans yet easily fits underneath the counter. It is attractive, sleek, streamlined and easily cleaned. The scissors tucked in the back are an added bonus. The cord is relatively short but long enough to plug in where I use it. The can fits smoothly and efficiently under the blade, and the lever is easily operated with one hand. There are no sharp edges on the can lid after being cut open. On my first use I had a bit of trouble knowing when the can had been completely cut as I noticed no change in the sound emitted by the can opener and since the cut is on the outside not the top it is difficult to see the cut. That is certainly not problematic, and I am sure it is something that I will adjust to with time. This can opener works extremely well and is a dream to use. I would be wrong to not admit how much I have enjoyed using it and how much my hands appreciate it. I highly recommend it to anyone who has any misgivings at all about electric can openers. This Hamilton Beach electric can opener is great! I have tried a bunch of different can openers hoping to NOT have one sitting on the counter with a plug. However, since all the others quickly failed, I gave in and ordered this one. I am so glad that I have this one that I don't have to turn with my arthritic hands, or replace batteries only to find out they work "sometimes". It's important to be able to depend on a can opener working when you are in the middle of making a meal! It is much easier to put this can opener away (if you want to) because it's light and has a lift handle. It works quick, easy and every time! The cord does retract fully but I leave mine out just the amount I need to reach the outlet. It's more expensive than I wanted to spend, but I am fully confident it will be with me for a long time to come. The scizzors in the back are an added bonus. I highly recommend this can opener for quality, weight, sturdiness and ease of use.

Should’ve bought this can opener Long before. I got sucked into the battery operated ones that go around the top by themselves bought two different manufacturers. Both of them quit opening cans after about the fifth or six can unbelievable. This can opener will last another 25 years. I can tell by it superior operating. My wife loves it. We have opened two dozen cans with it so far and it keeps working like new don’t waste your time on the little battery operated can openers buy this one you won’t be disappointed!

I bought this can opener in January and after almost two months I can safely say I love it. It doesn't take up a lot of counterspace, it's easy to operate and it very much lives up to the smooth edge moniker. I use mine every day since it makes it a lot easier and safer to open cans of wet catfood. The unit itself is made of plastic but it's very sturdy and well-designed for sitting on a countertop. It can also handle many different sizes and types of cans. I even use mine for opening cans with pull tabs because even those can sometimes leave sharp edges that can cut you. Another thing I like about this can opener is that it opens the can in such a way that you can still use the lid, say if you only needed half the can's contents and wanted to store the rest for later, as the lid will fit back into place quite securely. If you're looking for an electric can opener that's easy to use, doesn't take up much space and won't leave you struggling with sharp edges on the lids, then this might be a worthwhile addition to your kitchen.

We loved this can opener when we got it four years ago. It cuts on the side. There were no sharp edges to worry about and the lids could be placed back on the can to store the half can of cat food in the fridge for later. It was and is easy to operate even though I am old and my hands are weak. But after four years, it no longer cuts as cleanly and we have terrible sharp edges again. It does not seem to be user serviceable. There are no adjusting screws, nothing to sharpen, no rebuild kits I can find. Which is too bad because apart from the sudden sharp edges, the unit looks and works like new. Since I never had a can opener that worked as well as this one did until recently, I am back to buy another. But I decided to post a review to complain about the inability to service it. There should be rebuild kits!

This can opener is working well. The challenge is that it does not open the cans as I had expected, and was a bit confusing. The cuts are lower down from the lids. It is easy to get it to lock onto most cans. Nice that is is not too large and item. Color was good. It also is heavy enough to stay in place. Seems to be durable at present.

I purchased this unit after my wife decided that her old opener was no longer satisfactory. As to what that means, I presently have no explanation. :P Anyway, she purchased a new, automatic opener that she rejected out-of-hand as it was exactly the same design as her old one other than it was made by a different company. The new opener was also very cheaply made in that it had certain, major components now constructed of plastic rather than sturdy metal. She purchased this without my input as she is very independent. We'll be donating this new opener to "Goodwill." As to this can opener, it is a solid, well built unit. It is significantly heavier which lends itself to greater stability when in use. The operating components, unlike other cheaper openers, are made of steel and there is no risk of breaking the operating lever when pressing down to activate the unit. It is quiet when operating and removes the can lids efficiently without residue. The opener holds the can once attached and when the operating lever is depressed to begin removal. The only issue, and it's minor, is that once you attach the can to be opened to the opener, one must continually hold the activating lever down to complete the opening of the can. At that point, one simply lifts the lever to remove the can. My wife states that her previous opener would open the can without the necessity of holding down the activating lever until the opening process was fully completed. Her old opener would open a can and simply stop when the can was opened. Of course, opening a can only takes about 5 seconds. That was her only complaint. UGH! This unit opens cans using a side action mechanism that leaves no sharp-edged lids to mess with. Very nice! A pair of small scissors is also a part of the package. Why such an item is included is incomprehensible to me. I suppose you can trim your toe nails with them while you open your cans. I paid about $63.00 as of this date (06/18/2025). This is a very good opener at a reasonable price.
