  • Amazing
Style: Can Opener
This can opener is amazing. It takes a bit to get used to but is worth it. We have had it two years now with no issue.

  • Oh my goodness, this thing is AMAZING!
Style: Can Opener
So I'm definitely not one to get excited about kitchen gadgets, but now that I'm trying to cook more I need to use the can opener often. We used to have an electric one which I LOVED, but when we moved into a small Craftsman bungalow with almost no counter space in the kitchen I got rid of it. Going back to the old can opener was miserable and I could barely use it myself, often just getting my husband to do it for me. So I finally broke down and decided I need to get a new one instead of waiting for hubby to get home just to open a can for me. I have really enjoyed OXO products I have ordered in the past and this looked like a great little piece of machinery. I watched the video and was amazed at how easy it looked. I ordered, but didn't want to get my hopes up while waiting for it to arrive. I was used to the can skittering around on the counter top and making a mess all the while, especially when I removed the lid which usually ended up in the can. So when this arrived I at least wanted it to be better than my old one, but I didn't want to hold my breath. I took out a can and tried to attach the OXO can opener, but it took me a second being used to my old one on which the handles went a different direction. So then I got it on right, very simply in fact (I guess I was trying to hard, lol). Then I attempt my first turn, awaiting the pain and struggle that I've come to associate with opening a can. It went so smoothly I began shaking my head assuming it must not be working, it didn't look like it was working. So I got all the way around and again being used to the lid plunking into the can, but this not happening with the OXO, I decided it must not have worked. I knew it was too good to be true, then I picked up the can, and under a squeeze of my hand the lid popped open. I was dumbfounded that I had just opened a can without breaking a sweat and with absolutely no pain in my fingers/hands/wrists/joints/etc., not to mention absolutely NO MESS!!! If there is one piece I will take with me wherever I move and will always be on my MUST HAVE list, this is it! I've never opened a can easier, even when I had the electric can opener. This OXO is so easy you too will probably wonder if it's working or if you're doing it right. When the lid comes up you will be amazed that there are no sharp edges and in most cases you can set the lid back down over the can to save the leftovers. I did notice however it depends on the size/sturdiness of the can. I had a harder time with smaller flimsier cans as the lid tends to shift, plus it works best if you set the lid back down exactly as you took it off which is relatively impossible. In almost every case though I could set the lid on, and while it didn't seal I was confident that the food would be fresh and not dried out when I next needed it from the fridge (I'd definitely use it within the week just to be safe). I also love the little pliers so I don't have to attempt to get it off with my fingers. Just one gentle tug and it pops right off, again with no mess. If you're looking for a reliable and easy to use can opener then most definitely give this one a try. Now I don't have to wait for hubby to get home to cook, and I don't have to deal with pain from struggling with a difficult opener. This is so easy I'm using it at least twice as much as our old one, I wish I had got one sooner! ... show more

  • It doesn’t leave metal slivers, unless it’s defective.
Style: Can Opener
Let me take a step back. We received one of these as a wedding gift over 7 years ago and it just now started to not function perfectly as of two weeks ago. I also had one of the first versions of this design growing up (from Pampered Chef at that time, although they discontinued that a long time ago) and it was always my favorite (hence why I put this OXO on our registry nearly 8 years ago and why I just purchased another one in the last two weeks). So fast forward to the present: this was actually not easy to find. I looked at similar designs but there was always something about them that didn’t measure up. This design is almost identical to the old pampered chef one and is amazingly simple, easy to use, and safe. The lid removing metal grips are perfect and serrated: the contour of the handle is perfect, it won’t make your hands hurt even if you have arthritis or carpal tunnel. So, as I said, I finally found this listing - which isn’t even prime shipping - and bought another. It works perfectly just as the original did. The reason I’m even writing this review though is because of the confusion I see in the negative reviews and what I think is going on with them: After 7+ years of use (or abuse) every single day, it started to lose its grip on cans. Then, very suddenly, within a couple days of noticing that it was aging, it began to cut poorly, leave gaps, and yes: cause some slivers of paper to shred off of the can. My only point here is that it took nearly a decade of abuse for this can opener to get to that point. That’s far longer than any other can opener can usually withstand in daily use for a full household. When I ordered this one: it was in the original packaging and worked just like a new one should. So: here is my theory regarding the negative reviews. Since this item hasn’t been sold by the manufacturer in a little while, you can really only buy it from 3rd party sellers. You need to inspect the item and be sure that it is in its complete original packaging and that the cardboard and plastic packing is not damaged. I have had several problems in the past with other items (not this one) where sellers will list something as new but they really send you someone else’s returned, defective, broken item instead and attempt to make the original packaging look “mildly damaged” or re-taping it together, etc... this is probably what a lot of people are dealing with since the manufacturer isn’t selling directly. Aside from that, discolored or flimsy cardboard packaging can indicate that the item was stored improperly in a warehouse for a long period of time. Flimsy cardboard = water damage, humidity damage, or worse: other liquids we won’t speak about. Discolored labels could indicate that or even worse. Just keep in mind that, if properly stored and kept, this thing should operate flawlessly. Be careful what seller you buy from! ... show more

  • Great can opener
Style: Can Opener
We have used a can opener identical to this one for many years, it finally stopped working so we ordered another. They are a bit expensive for a hand operated opener but we like the way it works. I recommend it.

  • Excellent can opener!
Style: Can Opener
I like the OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener because the lid doesn't fall into the can. It cuts around the lid and you pick it right up off of the top, no longer do you have the dirty lid fall into your food! It is easy to use. Also the handle and knob are nice and big, so you don't have trouble getting a hold of it. This is the second or third one that I have had, they last fairly long probably four or five years, then they finally don't work right, but I open a lot of cans. When I need to replace, this is the one I will buy again. ... show more
