Replaced a can opener that had gradually deteriorated and wouldn't reliably open cans. It would drop the can half way through and was a general pain to use. I had eMailed the company (a German company) trying to buy replacement parts, but got a response that said they do not sell parts for their kitchen products. So in other words the expensive German product is a "throw away". Very frustrating. After looking at the reviews on a dozen can openers, I didn't find a single one with consistent excellent reviews. All had issues about longevity, operation, leaving metal shards in the food, etc. My solution was to buy a modestly-priced unit with a decent brand name and hope for the best. I've had this Cuisinart unit for about a month and it's a huge relief from the old unit I threw out. It grips the can and you actually don't have to stand by with your hands under the can preparing to grab it when it falls out of the opener! It's tall and so cans fit under it easily. It stops when the can is fully cut. What's not to like? So far the only negative I can point to is its thin profile - while tall for tall cans, it is not really rock-solid stable and you have to make sure you don't tip it when you move it around or attach a can. A small price to pay for an opener that does what I bought it to do - open cans. In six months or so, if the opener is still functioning, I will up it to five stars. And even if parts wear, if Cuisinart will sell replacement blades and things, it will still get five stars. So this is an early review, very positive, with upside if it continues to work. UPDATE: Have been using this can opener for several months, now. It continues to work flawlessly and is far superior to the more expensive unit it replaced. I have increased the rating to five stars. It is a delight to use, and after the trials and tribulations of the earlier expensive German unit, this is an amazing product at a very attractive price point. ... show more

Pros: 1. Easy to get normal sized can set into position. 2. Once the cutting blade is in, it automatically grabs hold and cuts the whole lid off, it then automatically stops when done, holding the can in place until you gently pull it away. I cannot sing the praises of this feature enough, as it provides the least painful can opening experience I've ever had since developing arthritis and neuropathy in my hands. 3. Slim profile, sturdy base. This part I was concerned with, I wasn't sure about it being so slim that it would have enough of a base to be stable. So far I've had no problems with stability, and it's light weight makes it easy to move if needed. 4. Retractable cord. Well, this was an unexpected and welcome feature. Instead of having to worry about having too much extra cord laying around, the cord extends and retracts easily back into the unit so that you can have the perfect length of cord from unit to outlet. No having to use a twisty, or leave the cord just hanging around. 5. Arm comes off easily with minimal effort for cleaning. 6. Noise level is a little quieter than what I'm used to. That's nice. 7. It does the job so fast, I hardly have time to appreciate what little noise it makes. Cautions: 1. The blade is very sharp, so when cleaning it I wouldn't recommend getting fingers anywhere near the blade, I'd use a handled scrubber. It's early days and I've only had to rinse it off so far. 2. Be careful of the lid from the can. I'd recommend using a fork to get the lid off the magnet if you don't have fine motor skills, this is still a can opener cut and while it doesn't have what I would call jagged edges, it does have wavy edges that are sharp and the lid needs to be handled with care. I've never known an electric can opener where I didn't have to worry about this issue. Conclusion: It's the best electric can opener I've ever used. It attaches to the can easily, cuts quickly and quietly, takes up very little room on my counter. I don't dread having to open cans anymore, I'd even say I look forward to showing it off. ... show more

My eyesight is not the greatest up close, so it did take me a minute to figure out just exactly where the can should be oriented as you' push down the lever, once I figured that out, 'we' got along just fine lol. Orient the can, push lever, and walk away if you wish, to take care of other things, after 30 seconds or so it stops and is ready to be removed. The cord is just over 24'' long which is perfect for what I needed. The motor doesn't labor when in use, which was a concern I had with a battery operate I'd tried before settling on this one. Looks good too, would by again. There is no knife sharpener, in this unit, but I really don't need one, and glad that the design was simply focused on making a great can opener. ... show more

This is very easy to use, clean, and takes up very little space on the counter. I have it tucked in between the edge of the sink and the wall and don't have to move it.
