This device is an easy to use home charger. I had an electrician install mine, for about $2000 total including permits, as a hard-wired station rather than use the available plug ins. In my area, the outside outlet would require a separate GFCI and cost more than hardwiring. The box already has a GFCI so you don't need a second one. It was easy for the electrician to run a new line to my circuit breaker box and add a new 50A breaker to the box. YMMV. Note: To charge at the highest rate, 40A, you need a 50A line. A 40A line will charge at 32A. The 40A charge rate puts 9.3 to 9.6 KWh into the battery filling my 77 KWh battery in 8 hours. The 32A rate puts about 7.5 KWh in and takes about 10 hours to charge from empty to 100%. This was all brand new to me a month ago, but it is easy to learn all about Electric Vehicles. ... show more

TLDR: bought the ‘smart’ version, returned it. Bought the ‘basic’ version, couldn’t be happier. Build quality: great. Unit seems virtually bulletproof, almost to the point of being overbuilt. Packaging: nothing fancy. Unit delivered in the manufacturers packaging with mounting hardware and link to the digital instructions. No unnecessary junk or styrofoam to dispose of. Install: mounting of the unit took minutes. All you really need is a 50A NEMA 14-50 receptacle, and you just mount the bracket to the wall, screw the mounting plate onto the back of the unit, and hang it. Ease of use: (basic version) Remove connector from wall holder, uncoil wire, walk to vehicle charging port, plug in, walk away. No issues with connector fit or function. Pricing: good value when compared to similar units. Far superior to the charger that my vehicle came with from the factory, which cost considerably more. Backstory: originally bought the ‘smart’ version, which gave me all kinds of fits during setup, and then would not work until ‘smart’ features were turned off…essentially turning the unit into the ‘basic’ one. Returned that one and bought the ‘basic’ charger for considerably less money. I’m using my vehicle app / settings to set preference on charging times and charge levels, and not really missing any of the other ‘smart’ capability. Have heard horror stories about Grizzl-e customer service / technical assistance, but not sure what you’d need them for if you opt for the ‘basic’ unit. I have a plug in hybrid so didn’t need blue tooth and all the accessories that come with it. From independent reviews, the GrizzlE was always rated high with comments about simple design and rugged construction. So I bought one. They were definitely right. I hung the charger inside my garage and ran the cable through the wall so it can hang outside. I was just really surprised to not only see personal reviews about the holster being cheap and breaking, but then to find the company actually agrees with that assessment by selling a heavy duty holster as an extra. What a marketing flop over a piece of plastic that probably cost them less than a dollar a piece. I’d rather use the holster, but I don’t want to deal with it breaking. ... show more

So far this charger is all we need! After reading about wifi enabled chargers for hours I realized that our car has timed charging settings and it also has an app (VW id4). So why bother with an additional app for the charger? This is a robust and nice piece of equipment.

This charger is UL listed, which was a basic requirement for me. I'm not a fan of IoT devices or smart anything. I see them as a security liability as ransomware and cyber crime escalate (not to mention govt surveillance). There are also a lot of reviews of smart chargers where chargers are bricked by a software update, or can't charge while updating, or removes some feature they liked via update. The Grizzl-e doesn't do any of that. You set it up and it just works. The mounting process is easy. The holster is functional and solidly supports the cable and plug using the supplied anchors on drywall. The case is heavy but not in a bad way - more in a this is built to last way. The cable is thick and makes the cord that came on my factory Bolt dual charger look puny. The cable is made to last. Changing output is easy - remove 4 bolts and flip some switches according to the manual. This unit was recently featured in a teardown on Munro Live. They loved the simplicity and added safety of physical fuses. This charger doesn't offer any bells and whistles, but this is a great value for someone who doesn't care about all the data mining and checking on things with your phone and just wants something simple and built to last. the charger works like a champ, after three months of regular use, no problems at all. two friends have level two charges that were markedly more expensive and don't look near the quality of our grizzle. easy to install and fast responsive customer service. highly recommend with no reservations
