I've been dying my hair black since I was in seventh grade. I've tried many different shades/brands and this one is my favorite. It is DARK. When they named it "blackest black" they weren't kidding. It does not fade quickly at all. My roots grow out before the dyed hair softens in color. The fruit oils make it smell great, not like that old school hair dye chemical stench. It also leaves my hair feeling really soft for a bit right after use, which none of the others did. If anything they made the texture of my hair worse. Not this one. (Also. Some of you... wow. Hair dye reviews often annoy me because it's like okay you're either allergic or don't know what you're doing because that makes no sense lmao. Do not mix it and then leave it for HOURS with the top closed. What did you think was going to happen. 🤦🏻♀️ And don't tell me it's dangerous because it burned your skin. Would use again! the scent was easy to handle and the product spread evenly. Knocked a star off because unfortunately it does carry a bit of a blueish tint after my hair dried which can only be seen in mirror lighting. I’ve tried my fair share of box dyes over the years, but Garnier Nutrisse 40 Dark Brown (Dark Chocolate) has earned VIP status in my bathroom cabinet. It’s affordable, effective, and doesn’t make me feel like I’m dying in a cloud of fumes—so that’s a solid win to start with. Unlike other brands (ahem, Schwarzkopf), this one doesn’t try to strangle you with a chemical smell you can almost see. The scent is mild enough that I can breathe normally for the full 25-minute processing time without wondering if I’m losing brain cells. After rinsing, the scent is faint and pleasant—nothing to make your family avoid you for days. Let’s talk results. I’ve got long, fine hair and enough grey to outshine a well-lit Christmas tree. This dye covers every sparkle, leaves behind rich, dimensional color, and the dyed greys actually add soft, natural-looking highlights. It matches my natural (non-grey) shade almost perfectly—just enough refresh to make me feel like myself again, minus the shimmer. Application? Listen—I’m busy. I don’t section and paint and pray. I squeeze the thick cream directly onto my roots and massage it through like shampoo. It stays where I put it, doesn’t drip all over my face or sink, and gets the job done in record time. And now: the conditioner. Oh, the conditioner. I’d buy this stuff by the gallon if they sold it separately. It smells nice and leaves my hair feeling silky soft and tangle-free, which is a minor miracle. Ive been using this hair dye for 4 years :] I've never used another brand. I usually stick to dyeing it one whole color but recently tried a two tone look. The color is very vibrant at first, but washes out a bit with every wash (unpreventable due to the way hair IS) I've also noticed the purple/blue tones tend to stick less, while red stays for a long time. Ive dyed it dark blue and within a few months it washed out to brown/red because of the previous times I've dyed my hair red. For reference my natural hair color is dark brown. First photo is most recent, second is from dark blue, third is what it faded into, last is what I'd consistently dyed it before i branched out. Other things to note; it will stain your hands, the gloves they give you suck, I recommend getting your own disposable gloves. Your hair WILL be damaged, no way to prevent this with hair dye. But you can fix it. I've noticed my hair becomes a bit dry and brittle after dyeing, so any moistening mask will help. Really get in there, its easy to miss spots and his will cause your final look to be patchy (not the dyes fault). ... show more
