  • Overall happy, here are the explicit dimensions to consider for your doorframe
Size: 40 x 40 inch Color: Brown Board & Black Bracket
The entire width of the mounted awning, including brackets, is 40 1/8 inches. The mounting bolt holes are 38 1/8 inches apart on center. The inner width between the brackets is just less than 36 inches. This is important to know if you are wanting the brackets to not overlap (and be true perpendicular to the ground) the frame opening. I wasn't clear on where precisely everything would line up, as a result, my brackets are slightly skewed AND overlap a little my frame opening. Function is not lost, but it's not as pretty as it should be. ... show more

  • Not meant for long term use, or people house
I ordered this to shelter a mini split unit next to our house. I could tell from the price that it was going to be low quality but I was amazed at how bad it actually was. The plastic canopy material is so thin and lightweight you could mistake it for packing material or another disposable product. The aluminum extrusions are paper thin. I dropped one, it bent and then a small section broke off when I bent it back to shape. The extrusions were "shrink wrapped" with some brittle plastic sheeting along with all of the chips from sawing. Edges were razor sharp with nothing deburred. One of the brittle plastic frame sections was cracked right out of the box (see photo). It was still useable but there is nothing resembling packing material in the box (unless you count the product). I fumbled together to get the poorly made product together. It was like assembling random parts from around the garage rather than putting something designed together. I anchored the expanding studs in solid wood. There were no instructions for what drill size to use, I just went large enough to have a "tap" fit on the stud. The studs never really got tight, I was afraid to rip something apart so I just snugged everything up and will hope for the best. I only plan to use this structure until the weather gets a bit nicer and I can build a real shelter for the mini split. I would never mount this on an actual house, maybe a dog house, but not a house for people. I can't even imagine a slumlord would get away with mounting this on a rental. ... show more

  • Third time's the charm
Size: 40 x 40 inch Color: Clear Board & Black Bracket
First, you should know that the company, FCH, listed as the manufacturer on Amazon isn't actually the manufacturer. The brand name of the canopy is Vingli. It will come in a Vingli box that has probably been returned by a previous customer. That was true of the first canopy FCH sent me, which was missing the back aluminum bar. it was true of the second canopy FCH sent me as a replacement, which had the back aluminum bar, but the part had been damaged when an earlier customer, apparently, tried and failed to install it and returned it. Third Vingli box included all parts and none was damaged. So, assuming you get a full, undamaged canopy, here is how you assemble it 1. Throw away the instructions that came with the canopy. They will only confuse you. Take the plastic corner protectors off the 2 clear plastic rectangular sheets, then peel off the protective film. 2. Look for the clear plastic connector strip. It will have grooves on either side and is slightly shorter than the rectangular sheets. Slide the clear plastic rectangular sheets into this clear plastic connector strip. Set aside. 3. Look next for the 2 long aluminum strips. Check to make sure that the ends are not bent and that the holes in each edge piece are open. The flatter aluminum strip will be installed at the back of the canopy (and will run parallel to your wall when installed). The aluminum strip with the rounded edge will be at the front of the finished canopy. Slide one aluminum strip onto either side of the connected rectangular plastic sheets that are now attached together, parallel to the plastic connector. The assembly will look like this: aluminum strip; plastic sheet, plastic connector, plastic sheet, aluminum strip. This assemblage will not be a snug fit, so you might want to use some painters tape to temporarily hold the pieces in place, but leave the bare edges of the plastic sheets clear of tape. 4. Take one of the black plastic brackets and, laying it flat on the floor or other flat surface, slightly bend the connected plastic sheet assemblage just enough to fit into the groove at the inside edge of the bracket. Make sure that the rounded aluminum piece is at the front of the bracket and the flat aluminum piece is at the back with its completely flat side facing up. 5. Once you have the assemblage in the groove, you'll need two of the self-drilling short screws, and a drill (or screw gun) with a Philips screwdriver bit. The screws will each create a hole in the aluminum pieces when you drill them into place. Find the innermost screw holes on the bottom of the bracket, near each end. You will see 2 holes in each location, but will be inserting the screws only into the INNERMOST hole, not the outer (which is there for you to insert a second canopy section, should you have purchased the double canopy version). Use your electric screw gun or electric drill to screw these into place. There is no hole in the aluminum pieces, so a regular handheld screwdriver won't work. It might be helpful to first drill a small (smaller than the screw size) pilot hole. Make certain that the pieces are in tight alignment before drilling. 6. Next, you'll use the longer screws to secure the sides of the bracket to the sides of the aluminum pieces. There are two screw holes inside the groove of the sides of the brackets, front and back. 7. Flip the assembly around, tap it lightly along the edge of the bracket, to make sure everything is still in alignment, and repeat the above process with the second bracket. 8. Once all the screws are in, the canopy assembly is completed. Use a thin bead of clear silicone caulk in all the seams, to keep out moisture and reduce the chance of mold growing inside the seams. 9. The canopy is now ready to attach to your wall. The bolts supplied are for concrete, brick, and similar walls. If your walls are made of wood, you'll need different screws and might need to do a little extra work to ensure you can attach the canopy to the studs. I first attached 1x4 boards to the studs, top and bottom, with structural screws. The boards were painted the color of the house. The canopy was attached to the boards top and bottom, with wood screws with washers under the heads (so that they will be secure in the bracket holes), with flashing between the board and canopy back. This is a serviceable, but not particularly attractive plastic canopy. It looks plastic. There's no way of pretending otherwise. It will probably last longer if you use the silicone caulk at the seams, as i suggest, but it's not going to last forever. Consider it a temporary solution at best, and if you get 3 years out of it, you've gotten your money's worth. With luck, using the above instructions, you'll also have gotten your labor's worth. ... show more

  • Installation on Masonry/Brick
Size: 40 x 40 inch Color: Brown Board & Black Bracket
I'm using the awning to keep sun, rain and snow off of pool electronics mounted on a foundation wall. The awning came with four 3" long, 10mm sleeve anchors. The instructions are silent on how to use these. If you are installing the awning on masonry, brick, cinder block, etc., you will need a 3/8" masonry bit to drill your holes. The holes should be approximately 3" inches deep, which due to the thickness of the bracket, gives you a hole about 1/2" to 1" deeper than the length of the anchor, which is what you want. Be sure to remove the loose debris and dust from the hole. A drinking straw is the perfect diameter to scoop most of the debris out of the whole before blowing out the remainder. (Wear eye protection!) I used a hammer to tap the anchors all the way in before tightening them with a crescent wrench. The installation seems sturdy and up to the task it's intended for, though time will tell. Right now I'm quite happy with it. ... show more
