I am writing this review from the perspective of someone who is in a wheelchair. I am paralyzed: I have no abdominal support, and my hands are weak—like 50% strength (C7 complete). I'll also mention that my house is carpeted, so that is its primary use. I'll leave performance reviews for others who have done much more testing than me (there's some great resources out there... a surprising number really). Upsides: First, let me say this: if you're in a wheelchair, corded vacuums are out of the question. They're heavy, they're unwieldy, and the cord gets in the way all of the time. Thus, you need a battery-powered vacuum, in which case you're probably getting a lightweight stick vacuum. Stick vacuums are your best option if you're in a wheelchair. There's no cord to get in your way, and they're light enough to where you can just vacuum with one hand and maneuver yourself with the other. Maintenance is not an issue: it's easy to empty the waste receptacle, and it's easy to clean the filter. When it comes to using the extension stick or leaving it off, I actually find it's easier to attach the power head directly to the vacuum and just lean over/forward to vacuum. This is an option that the Dyson V11 gives you, which other non-adjustable vacuums do not. If you're low to the ground (perhaps because you're short or because you're in a wheelchair) then you might not want all that extra length of the "stick" attachment, since it forces the head to protrude too far forward, which hurts leverage and becomes unwieldy. In contrast, if you live with a normal-bodied person who also uses the vacuum, then they probably want the stick on, so it's good to have the option to leave the stick on/off when using the power head, which this vacuum offers. Downsides: To keep the weight down, the waste receptacle is quite small. This means you'll have to empty it frequently. This is a problem inherent with just about all stick vacuums, so it's something you'll just have to accept. At least you don't have to purchase bags. The dust filter seems to get dirty very quickly (I have a dusty old house with two pets, so your mileage may vary). This is a good thing and a bad thing. On the one hand, it's tedious to have to clean the filter so often (like after every full-home vacuuming). On the other hand, it's quite effective at filtering dust, which is a good thing (less dust is expelled into the air). It's easy to remove and clean the filter, so no issues there. To use the vacuum, you must hold the button at all times. This is intended to conserve battery power, but it makes using the vacuum more difficult, especially when you have limited hand function like me. Luckily, however, you can buy a "button lock" from a 3rd party manufacturer for Dyson vacuums. However, it'd be nice if they just had a click on/off method instead. -- In sum, I'd say a stick vacuum is the best option for someone who is disabled and/or in a wheelchair. I will update over time. However I am already in love with this vacuum. I own a long hair dog and short hair cat that sheds everywhere of course :) . Also I had a Hoover cordless vacuum for the past couple of months that did not do its job. I couldn’t review it here cause I bought it at Walmart. The previous vacuum very quickly had no suction power no matter how I cleaned it out. This v11 vacuum came charged to 1 out of the 3 battery bars! I was very thankful! I got to use it right after assembly. Very easy to put together and love the separate pieces. I never used these pieces with other vacuums because it was annoying but not with v11. The compartment can hold a lot of dirt/fur. It was also so easy to empty out without having to touch the dirt inside. I live in a studio apartment with half of it carpet (ugh). The best place I could put the cat litter box was on the carpet and of course the litter is everywhere around it. The previous Vacuum could never pick it up (even spit it back out) however the v11 did a beautiful job. Even though it is expensive it was definitely worth the buy!!! I hope this vacuum lasts a long time for me. That’s my only worry right now until I see it for myself. ... show more

I am not a cleaning gadget person. Give me a rag and some Simple Green, a mop, a broom and a vacuum and that's pretty much it. I have purchased several vacuums I thought were good (always more money than I liked), but always came up short for cleaning. I finally bit the bullet and purchased this Dyson V11 Animal vacuum. I figured I would ultimately disappointed again, but for more money this time. I was wrong! I have been blown away by how much better this vacuum works than any I have had before. I love, LOVE not being tethered to the wall and dithering with a cord all the time. This vacuum has so much more power than my past corded vacuums, it is easy to handle, the head is low enough to go under my furniture, it is easy to empty and it doesn't give me a backache as my others have. The battery lasts long enough for me to do our 1850' sq foot house end to end. We have hardwood floors with scattered wool area rugs and having the vacuum adjust to each new surface without my help is pretty darned neat and IT WORKS. We live in the Rocky Mountains, so we have an additional season....the season of mud. We have two cats and two dogs that love the outdoors and come and and go freely through a pet door. So we have A LOT of dirt and A LOT of hair. I am not a happy house keeper. I want to do it once a week and be done with it. That leaves a few days of the week with some pretty dirty floors. Not anymore. This vacuum is so easy to use and so effective that I grab it often and keep the floors up. AND WOW does it pick stuff up and suck all the dirt out of my rugs. They are definitely brighter and I was surprised to be able to actually see a difference. I do not hesitate at all to recommend it. ... show more

I had a cordless Dyson for about 10 years before it developed any sort of problem but since it was so old, I decided to not have it repaired (I live in a town which doesn't have any sort of Dyson repair place) because it would mean traveling too far to get it fixed and would require a couple of trips. Instead, I opted to replace it with a cordless vacuum which was not a Dyson and was cheaper. The new one lasted about a year.....won't do that again. I can spend almost $150 a year and buy a cheaper cordless vac or I can buy the best and have it last a whole lot longer. I opted for the latter and I am delirious with my decision. I'm telling you, the Dyson V11 Animal has far exceeded my expectations. It has super suction and I love the way you can select auto adjustment from hard floors to carpet or you can leave it on what you want if you don't want to do that. It is so easy to use yet is powerful beyond belief. Yeah, it was a little pricey but not if you want THE BEST. I have 2 Dyson canister vacuums (one for each end of the house) but I find myself grabbing the V11 Animal more frequently. It even sounds powerful yet it is not very noisy. I LOVE IT!!!! It cleans like crazy. It is definitely worth the price. I'll stick to Dyson from now on....no more less expensive cordless vacuums for me....HOORAY DYSON!!!!!! ... show more

It was time to replace our old Dyson cord vacuum. I think it was 17 years old. Since it had performed so well over the years, I immediately looked to Dyson again. I admit I was a bit skeptical that a smaller stick vacuum could do the job in an almost 2000 sq ft house. We are senior citizens who have an active lifestyle, live in the mountains off of dusty roads, have house cats and 2 Aussie dogs. Since we also have horses and acreage, we are busy and the cleaning sometimes takes a lower priority. I wanted something that was easy to use, quick, and not having to drag a cord around sounded really good! Hubby thought I was making a big mistake. But, after assembling it and using it today, he has changed his mind, and I really, really like this handy and powerful vacuum. Some of the features take a bit of getting used to, like taking the tube with the power head off to dump the bin. In fact, I was concerned about the small size of the bin, and how often I might need to dump it. But after using it to vacuum most of the house, I'm no longer concerned. I'm used to it now, and it takes just a moment. And...it did a great job, our area rugs look great, and it moves so easily to our hardwood floors. One really big plus for us is that it runs off battery charge. We live off the grid and generate our own electricity with solar and wind. On cloudy, windless days, I was basically forbidden to vacuum, unless I started a generator. But now, I can have a charge ready and get it done! Couldn't be happier. If, having using this for a time we find something to change our opinion, I will edit my review to reflect it. Can definitely recommend this product! ... show more

Absolutely loving it.This is my third Dyson vacuum,two uprights and this cordless.You are getting an upright,which is lighter,cordfree,easier to manuever,quieter,has more suction,and can get to places the uprights couldnt.You are also getting a handheld you can use in the car,unencumbered by a cord,which is also terrific for quick cleanups and dusting around the house.Throw in the handy docking station which keeps the vacuum constantly charged,while also keeping it stowed,and you have the perfect cleaning tool.This is an actuaI 2 in 1 vacuum,unlike the upright canister vacuum which is a chore to use when using attachments because of the unwieldy hose.I am interested in the technology that goes into such a tool,as well as its ability to clean my house,and this is as good as it gets.Would I have ever thought I would ever spend this much on a vacuum,no,but I am glad I did and it is well worth the money.And the fact that Amazon allowed me to purchase this vacuum over 5 months interest free,makes this purchase a no brainer and just shows how Amazon stays ahead of its competition with incentives such as this.Highly recommended.As a footnote,when purchasing this vacuum,the serial number is visible on the outside of the box.Before you break the seal and it becomes a used vacuum,register the vacuum before ever opening the box and breaking the seal.Once Dyson confirms your warranty,which was almost instantaneous,then go ahead and unbox,that way if there is a warranty problem,the vacuum remains a brand new,unopened item which can be easily returned. ... show more

I had a small vacuum that wasn't seeming to pick up dirt anymore and it was a struggle getting anything done with it, having to go over the same spot several times. I also have a dog (great Pyrenees mix) that sheds so much I don't know how she still has so much hair on her. I bought a Dyson v6 for my mother yeas ago and we always enjoyed it and I thought I didn't want to pay for a dyson for my new home... well 7 months later I was fed up what I had. I debated a Dyson and a standard corded model but, the convenience of cordless it something I really wanted. I had several concerns about the Dyson, mainly: battery life, suction power (I have mostly wood floors but a very large area rug in the living room that gets dog hair embedded in it), price $$$. Battery life seems like it will be a non issue. I let it charge for 4 hours, and then I vacuumed my entire house and I only lost 1 bar. Suction power was more then adequate for my needs; in about 2 minutes my rug felt deep cleaned and that was without using the Boost mode. It pulled up every embedded dog hair, and a TON of dirt. The picture in my review is a photo taken AFTER I vacuumed the rug with my old vacuum. It is 2x past the max fill line which was shocking to me when I looked down! I did not expect so much dirt to be sucked up and so much hair. My rug feels new again. I then did the rest of my living room, my kitchen, three bedrooms, a long hallway and a bathroom. The swiveling head is fantastic, and I stayed in "Auto" mode the whole time. My floors feel like I swept and mopped them, they have that squeaky clean feeling. I finished all of those areas in the time it usually takes me to do kitchen and living room to a satisfactory level. No switching cords, no struggling with low suction, the swivel on the head got into every area I needed, and it is so lightweight. The downside to the suction power is I did needed to empty the bin 4 times. It really doesn't hold a lot, so that might be a concern to some. Also, with how much dog hair is around my house, it really wraps around the little post in the bin and I do have to reach in and pull it out to get it out. That is very annoying, but would happen with any bagless system and my dogs hairs (they are 2-4 inch long hairs). Still, a slightly bigger bin would have been nice. I also wish I didn't need to detach the stick to empty the bin but the clip on/off system makes it quick and painless. Bringing me to the concern of price. I still think it's too much, and that is why I am giving it 4 stars. It's a great machine and I think it will fit most peoples needs, but I feel like it could cost less, or come with more for the price. I would love a drop in battery so that you could have two ready to go, for instance. I know from our previous Dyson (my mothers) that replacing the battery is a bit of a hassle and they DO die; I had to replace the D6 battery under warranty twice in a few years time. However, all that said, "time is money". The convenience of cordless, suction power, lightweight, excellent maneuverability and getting my entire home done is less then half the time it used to take me and eliminating the need to pre-sweep some areas all made the purchase worth it. ... show more

We rent a home with hardwood floors and Mexican tile in some rooms. When we moved here I had a Sebo (very expensive German brand) that was supposed to rival Dyson. The Sebo would not allow me to turn off the brushes and was damaging the hardwood. Bought an expensive parquet floor attachment with hoses. It was so huge, cumbersome, and miserable to use, dragging the upright and messing around with hoses and cords, that I hated having to vacuum at all and it took over 2 hours. Before Sebo I owned a Dyson upright and still can't believe I let myself get talked into the Sebo after my first Dyson gave up the ghost. Always loved my Dyson. The Sebo is mega expensive (altogether we had over $1000 wrapped up in it with base price and extra attachments). I thought the price of the V11 Animal was pretty steep, but now I can do my entire home (3-bedrooms, huge kitchen/dining/living room, laundry room, 2 baths, and sun room in a little over an hour and never take it off the Eco setting. That includes 1 large area rug, 1 5' runner, and a door mat. It rarely takes more than 1-1/2 hours and that's getting under beds, too. The brush on the floor attachment is strong enough to pull things off the rugs, but it does NOT damage the hardwood finish. It's super simple to pull out at a moment's notice to clean up dry spills, use the power brush to clean cat fur from cushions, or just do a quick traffic lane maintenance mid-week. No hoses to trip over or yards of cord to fight with. I've only had Dyson back in my home a little over a month, but I'm so happy that I bought it. Keep in mind I have had 7 orthopedic surgeries (neck, lumbar spine, knee, both feet, and both hands) and deal with the attendant disabilities that have resulted, but I can do this and still stand upright when I'm done. A little tired and sore, but I can handle it like a breeze compared to what I went through with the Sebo. I do notice that it is harder to push on the rugs so not sure how I'd handle an entire carpeted house, but still, I highly recommend this machine! ... show more
