  • Incredible
It had been over 10 years since i had done any type of computer upgrades. I think XP was still the predominant OS that last time I opened up a computer to do any type of work. I had gotten into the habit of just buying new every couple years and recycling. For the last couple months I had been researching new laptops, and while reading their Amazon Reviews, I noticed a re-occurring theme of dropping a good SSD in with a clean copy of Windows on a brand new machine. I started to go down the path of doing that myself, and got to reading about these Crucial SSD's. I decided that I'd just upgrade my existing laptop (HP 15-af131dx), the small BX500 was only $28, so if i wasn't satisfied I could just go with the original plan and buy a new laptop. Due to the cheap construction of this HP, accessibility was a little bit of a challenge, but I did it on my coffee table in under 15 minutes. I had a clean copy of Windows 10 on a thumb drive, popped it in, and turned on the power. The installer immediately started up, and I could tell immediately how quick this SDD was. Installation was only a few minutes long, and I've spent the last few hours re-installing my commonly used apps and trying them out. 'Astonished' doesn't even come close to describing my feelings. Everything is fast now. I can't believe I didn't do this sooner. I went ahead and ordered new RAM (even though i don't think i really need it) and will be installing that later this week, and there is no longer any need for me to buy a new laptop. This $28 shot in the dark ended up saving me hundreds of dollars on a new machine. I couldn't be more satisfied. Without a doubt the best money i've spent this year. ... show more

  • Inexpensive and fast SSD from a reliable company
my core i3 Lenovo Yoga was becoming unusable, boot times, wake from sleep, internet. Since the Yoga can not upgrade RAM, I put the 120gb for $28 with a clean install of Windows 10. Now a restarts takes a few seconds and wake from sleep is as soon as I open the cover. I ran the Crystalmark a few times since it was higher than the other posted ones and this is the lowest of my runs. The drive is a 2018 model, Crucial answers any questions quickly, and I have bought from them for years without problems. ... show more

  • Not worth the headache
Purchased as the boot (Windows 7 OS only) drive. -The drive works but is slow compared to my Samsung SSD. -The downloaded cloning software makes this drive not worth it ! When I cloned my Samsung SSD (850 EVO) (clean install) some files were not cloned onto the Crucial SSD. In particular, the audio driver files were missing. When I tried to install the driver files from the recovery disks, the OS indicated that there wasn't any device & the install failed. I removed the Crucial BX500 from my laptop, reinstalled my Samsung SSD & booted up. Voila, the audio system was working. Tried a second cloning onto the Crucial after a full format. Reinstalled the SSD & no audio. Grrrrr ! Reformatted the Crucial SSD & did a new/clean install of the Windows OS. After spending an afternoon dealing with the install & updates, the Crucial SSD works & the audio is also working. The boot up (power to password) for the Samsung was 30 sec. The boot up (power to password) for the Crucial was 38 sec. This indicates that it is a slower drive. No other files/programs have been loaded on either drive. Its Crucial that you follow my recommendation - do not buy this drive because the cloning software is horrible ! The drive works but is slow, making the advantage of a SSD null & void. ... show more

  • HD is flawless - process is not.
Ordered the HD and arrived fine, but the cable necessary to transfer data arrived a day later. Instructions included with the hard drive were to download Crucial software, and upon installation the software would not work. A Google search of the error message indicated that this was a common issue, and led me to third-party software which ultimately did work. This was a little frustrating, as I've used Crucial before with great results. A lesser Geek may have given up. ;) ... show more

  • Used SSD with Bent Connector and Almost Gone
I was excited when I got this drive direct from Amazon as I'd heard great things about this Crucial SSD. Before this all I had used was Samsung SSDs and I'd had mostly great experiences with them. My first suspicion something was wrong was the SSD didn't come in a sealed barcoded box like Samsung SSDs, it was packed in a plain brown envelope with "Crucial" stenciled on the outside. When I opened the package I found a bent and twisted press-to-close plastic container. Inside was the Crucial BX500 SSD, not sealed or shrink-wrapped. I checked out a YouTube video for unboxing the BX500 and it shows a nice SEALED blue and black box in contrast to this ugly brown envelope. So clearly something wasn't right here. When I tried to insert the SSD into my SATA test enclosure it refused to fit. When I examined the SSD's connector I saw the two pin tabs were bent down, and one of the guide slots was broken. After correcting the pin tabs I successfully inserted the SSD, connected to my PC, formatted it to NTFS and checked the SMART using CrystalDiskInfo. Although most of the SMART parameters were zeroed-out, imagine my shock when I saw the following parameters: 0xCA Percent Used: 64% !!!!!! 0xF6 Total Host Sector Writes: 24756CD 0xF7 Host Program Page Count: 123AB6 CrystalDiskInfo reported total Host Writes = 18GB (Holy #%!*@ !!!) So I got a used drive with a bent connector and most of it's lifetime gone. I don't know how Crucial thinks they can get away with selling such an obviously used drive. It's back to Samsung for me. ... show more
