The canopy is surprisingly lightweight and easy to handle but also remarkably strong. Since it does not allow ANY water to pass through, you MUST give it a sufficient angle to shed water in heavy rain. The manufacturer doesn't provide any guidance, but other sites indicate this should be somewhere between 1:5 or 1:6 pitch. This meant that my 12-foot shade sail needed between 24 and 30 inches of rise from one end to the other to ensure water drains. My first one filled with water and was deformed as it sagged and stretched under the water weight between the pergola cross members. Once this happened, no amount of additional tension would eliminate the bowls in the fabric. A replacement is on its way and I expect to install it correctly and get good performance out of it.

The sail looks like it could be reasonable quality although thinner than I expected. I just received it and although I ordered and the inner package verified it was 14' x 14', my Dewalt tape measure disagrees. In fact, it is only and exactly 12' x 12'. One would expect that the inner bag with info would be correct but, unfortunately, not. So, beware. Open and measure immediately.

I love this sail. I live in Florida and the sun can be brutal. I had to engineer the sail to fit unpredictable weather and I also attached it to my house. I’ve seen 15-20 mph gusts hit this thing and it handled very well. I’ve also seen torrential down pours and been under it and was 95% dry - only wet from the sides where there’s no cover. So, first. If you don’t pitch this sail downward of course it’s going to collect water in the middle and create a major problem. I chose to mount hooks low enough to have the water run off to one corner. When it’s raining or I’m not under it, I put it in “Rain Mode”. After a few rains, I noticed that the water runoff was eroding the ground where I mounted the 4x4 posts. I added a big flower pot, a rubber ducky and a water pump to an Alexa outdoor smart plug below the runoff. When I see the rubber ducky floating I just tell Alexa “Save the Duck” and it turns on the water fountain pump and sends the water away into The yard. After 30 seconds she shuts the pump off and all is good. Tension is key. Not too much tension. You want it to run water off easily but not too tight that you put stress on the mounts. It’s a sail, not a carport. It will fly with the wind. Let it. I mounted one of my posts (the one that pitches down) a bit further away than the recommended guidelines and I added a heavy duty turnbuckle that’s about 12 inches long. This lets me reposition the sail up and down on the post. I do rake it down in extreme weather. Think if it like a Sail Boat and you’re the captain. You have to monitor it when weather arises and man the ship. Have fun!

Overall I feel I got what I paid for. The quality of the product is as described by the seller on the website. I think the shade is permeable so it should shed water reasonably well but I must say It likely won’t be put to the test until next Spring. The color was accurate as was the dimensions. It has good quality rings at the corners and is stitched well from what I can see. It will be hung with one corner attached to my home, a corner on a privacy screen on the deck, and the remaining corners attached to new 4”x4” pressure treated posts I mounted in the ground at the outside edge of my patio area. It will shield our outside table from direct sun mid-day. The way I have hung the shade to the posts is by using a couple of sailing blocks fastened to the shade and to the top of the posts with 1/4 line to adjust tension. I have tried this out and it hangs firmly and is easy to put up and take down. Use of turnbuckles would not have worked well. The sun shade has too much stretch to the fabric to use turnbuckles with limited adjustment.
