  • Good product, good price.
I am new to home fitness (well, in the spirit of full disclosure, I'm new to fitness in general - ha ha) and this is my first bench, so please take that into consideration when reading this. The bench came quickly, a day or two before the estimated delivery time. It took a bit to assemble - you definitely need TWO wrenches (or socket sets) to assemble this bench, and about half an hour to 45 minutes. Still, nothing difficult, it's quite easy to assemble - just take your time. Once assembled, it's really a nice product, for home use. It's sturdy, functional, comfortable, and attractive. It's not made like the heavy duty benches made of steel I-beams I find at the gym, but that's not what I need - and for the price, it's a bargain. Contrary to what I've read in other reviews here, it's not too short for me - I'm 5'7", and I'm pretty sure it would be fine for folks several inches taller than me. Also, someone said that it was wobbly, due to the feet not being level. I have not found that to be the case at all, and besides, it has adjustable levelers on it's feet. Also, the padded rollers that hold your legs down (I'm sure there's a name for them, but I don't know it) are quite handy for doing sit-ups, and several other exercises. All in all, I feel that this was an excellent purchase. Good quality at a reasonable price. I'm quite happy with my "Cap Barbell Fitness FID Bench", and I'd recommend it. ... show more

  • Good for the price IF assembled carefully
if you are careful assembling the gazillion pieces that come in the box, you will have a serviceable exercise bench. I got mine mainly to do sit ups while I watch TV and to lift weights under ten pounds. There is a sheet of exercises that comes with the bench. I was very careful assembling the bench and I used the box it came in to help me align pieces (see photos). Some of the rubber and plastic parts come already put together. You do have to both read the instructions and study the diagrams. Be careful, when tightening several bolts in a single area to not fully tighten any one of them until they are all close to completely screwed in. When they are all almost completely screwed in, then tighten each one. If you tighten one before you have put any others in, stuff will get out of alignment and be impossible to assemble so everything meets up as it should. You will need scissors to cut tape and cable ties. Get yourself a towel to wipe your sweat and have a drink nearby because you'll probably need these! Although 2 adjustable wrenches are recommended, I used one adj wrench and some adjustable pliers. What I wish I had had was either a second person to help me or else, a set of sockets or those wrenches that come in specific sizes. If you can get the main frame (front and back and center supports) together without getting too frustrated, the rest is fairly simple. A note on the lock nuts: the wider end (without the nylon) goes on the bolt. There is blu-ish stuff on the slightly tapered end of the lock nut inside the hole. That's nylon that helps lock things in place. It makes a tight seal so that's why you'll need something to hold that nut still while you use something else to turn the bolt. I think that if you are over about 5'10" or are a long-bodied or long-legged person or are a very large-framed or excessively heavy, bulky person, this bench might be too small or uncomfortable for you. I'm 5'4" tall and it's fine for me. Everything seems to be made well enough, and I will repeat again, IF put together carefully. It took me about 2 hrs from opening box to finishing cleaning up. I believe at least 30 min could've been cut off that time if I'd had a helper or a set of those sized wrenches. I think the bench is nice-looking, with CAP embroidered on the backrest and is well-worth the money. It has a brown seat and backrest with black trim (see photo) and looks nice. The fabric is just stapled on but it's okay at this price level. So far, so good! Four stars because it is kind of a pain to assemble and something this cheap can't have five stars. But it's not shoddy. It will work okay for a home exercise bench. ... show more

  • Great versatile bench
ASSEMBLY: Probably the best assembly instructions I've seen in a long time. It comes with a card with all hardware clearly labeled. Then page 5 of the manual comes with a breakdown of the parts so you can easily lay them out for assembly. It was a joy to put together and took a little less than half of an Eagles, The Very Best Of album. They say you need two adjustable wrenches, a hammer, standard and phillips screwdrivers. I didn't need any of that, although you could assemble it with two adjustable wrenches if you had to, I didn't. What I used, which made it very easy to assemble was a metric socket set; an M13, M14, two M17, and two M19 sockets. As well as two ratchets. You could hold one side of STEP 1 E; with a M17 wrench, pliers, or adjustable wrench, tighten it with a ratchet on the other. But I prefer a ratchet on either side as it makes it easier and faster for me. Also STEP 2 B is the same method except with a size M19. Also Step 1 A: The unit came with this already done. Step 2 A; the first two sentences were already done as well. Then Step 3 E: says to lubricate Foam grips (#16) with water. This really works. They went on easily once I put a little water on my finger and ran it down the inside of each of these. Complete step 1 and 2 with the bolts just finger tight so there is plenty of play in it to get the others to line up easily. Then after all of Step 2 go back and tighten everything up before starting Step 3. USE: The backrest is about 2 inches too short for my head. With my feet locked behind the foam feet tubes, the back of my head is not supported well by the backrest, the crown of the back of my head is just over the backrest. I'm 5'11" so if that's important to you it may be too short for you. But I only lock my feet behind the feet tubes when I'm doing ab work, and it's not imperative that my head rest on the backrest. For all my chest work, I can slide my kiester down to the top foam tubes, then my head rests on the backrest. If they had a backrest that was just 6 inches longer it would be great for people up to about 6' 5". The footrest base folds in so you can easily move it or store it. It's very easy to adjust the backrest to the four positions. It appears and feels solid, like a bench that will be useful for many years to come. My old bench that this one is replacing did not appear as sturdy as this one and lasted over 20 years. CAUTION: Use of this item as a clothes hanger or dust collector may result in added flab around ones middle, arms, and chest. ... show more

  • Good but not great
Let me start off by saying that for the price, overall its a decent product - not excellent, but not terrible. Assembly The direction for putting the bench together were terrible to say the least. I would say it took me about 30-40 minutes from the time I got everything out of the box and unwrapped. The pictures were small and the print was a little blurry. Construction Some of the welds look absolutely terrible, which isn't effecting the structural integrity, its merely a cosmetic flaw. The pivoting support on the back that allows you to move from incline, flat and decline doesn't fit squarely in the pegs - I have to wiggle it and press it down firmly for it to actually go into the pegs. The back rest in which you actually lay your back on is not long enough - my head hangs off the edge and I am only 5'8". I can do my exercises (incline and flat bench), but it is annoying because the edge of the back rest is pressing in on my neck. Performance I took off the leg pads because they get in the way when trying to lift weights from you knees to a position in which to bench - but this is just a person preference. Although, you may need them for doing decline exercises. The bench does feel stable and doesn't feel like it is going to tip over or fall apart. However, I have stayed within the weight guidelines as stated in the paperwork. Overall Overall I think this bench will suite my needs - I am about 160 lbs, and probably won't use more than 100lbs of dumbbells with it. In the paperwork it actually says up to 250lbs (person) + 100lbs in free weights. I looked at quite a bit of benches before purchasing this one and for the price, features and the amount of weight you can use, I think this is the best deal. If you are serious about weightlifting, you may want to consider something more commercial and heavy duty. ... show more

  • I have never left a bad review yet on Amazon
I have never left a bad review yet on Amazon, but for this product I had to. I am going to leave this written review as well as pictures of the product and its defects I received and hope that nobody purchases this product after me, I would rather pay $200 for a SAFE/WELL CONSTRUCTED product than this cheaply welded, quality control passing product that is completely NOT SAFE to use for anybody. The reason for purchasing this product was so my wife could use it as an Ab Bench and I could possibly use it for inclined bench press instead of my flat X-Training bench which I love. I'll start with the good and end with the bad. GOOD: --Easy to assemble, no problems at all --Very light --Shrinks for storage purposes That's all the good I could come up with for the product as I was not able to use mine due to safety risks/defects and I would not let my wife even touch it. DAMAGED: --Out of the box there was a huge dent in the Front Stabilizer leg (PHOTO) --one of the small backrest supports had a dent as well but I wasn't worried about that one since you don't see those anyways, they are covered by the seats, normally I'm not picky with those kinds of things because it's going to end up getting banged up anyways --the Incline support does not line up to properly support your back, it's very scare and unsafe . If I let my wife use this machine all I can imagine is her doing situps and the incline support slides out of place and she falls on her head.(PHOTO) --the ENTIRE frame WOBBLES, it wobbles SO much that I could never even imagine trying to bench press on this thing (or do ANYTHING on this bench). If you want to drop your weights and possibly injure yourself then use this bench but that's not for me. --the bench is crooked, it leans to the left side so you can't even lay flat on it, this is a result of one of the above mentions with the wobbling.(PHOTO) I'm sure there is something else wrong with it but I didn't even finish putting this product together because it was so poorly built and was pissing me off that I even thought about buying this product because all of my equipment in my home gym is quality equipment. ... show more

  • VERY sturdy and well-built, does more than benches 8 times the price, holds more weight then you'd think...but...
I'd been looking at benches for quite some time now that I've gotten more into strength training than I'd ever been before and decided the space in my workout room was worth it... Most were simply a bench. Some had ankle support...I was eyeing a $250 when I came across this one on Amazon...that had more. Now granted it has a weight limit on it, but I think that's more because you can do sit ups on this one and to support very heavy weight may require a wider bench of more weight...but this is very heavy and other than that, it seems like it would work with twice the weight limit. I LOVE the backrest moving up and down...in simply a flip of your hand...all the way down for situps, a bench, flip around with the back all the way and face the other direction laying on the seat and raise and lower your legs for core work, lean on the bench or lay on it for arm work...it was solid but I think that takes a lot of work to get to that...with a two-man building team which I'll touch on in a moment. In the photo it looks like this is red, it's actually a dark tan faux leather with ample padding and a yellow logo. What you may not notice in the photo is that it also has 4 hooks underneath that hold two dumbbells for easy access. There is even a one step way of folding this up for easy storage via one pin. To me, it's phenomenal al this has for the price...far more than the ones way more expensive. That said, I know why. You are paying for convenience to pay more...this is a two-person job putting together and that's coming from someone who puts every piece of furniture etc together in this house because I have a world of patience and ability to read directions...but you have to have one person hold a wrench as another tightens it (tip: use a ratchet set and a wrench rather than 2 wrrenches). And you have to decipher the directions they haven't updated...like it tells you to put together a few pieces in the directions that they already put together and they labeled a part number 30 in the directions but there is no part labeled number 30,,it was 20...but get past all that and you have a superior bench. That said, using two people to ensure that every screw is uner taught is something you have to do in a weight bench...you want it sturdy. We did so and this is incredibly solid. But I also have a horrid bruise days later on my index finger from fighting to ensure it was all tight and that wasn't easy and took time with a wrench that slipped and grabbed my finger instead. Conclusion: It took an hour and 2 people to put it together (not actually doing it but figuring and reading the directions along the way very carefully) but I saved over $200 from the bench I almost got that did far less and I couldn't be happier. If you have patience and know how to tighten a bolt, I'd say you'll love it. If you bench an estreme amount of weight or want to throw things if it takes you longer to build something, I'd say go with a commercial bench. I wish they'd made the middle 2 pieces one piece...that was the hardest part but I think they split it into 2 to make it ship in a more compact box but I think they could charge more if more pieces were put together prior--For me, I love it and building it was a bit like labor pains...you may hear some cussing out of character during, but it feels worth it in the end. Ordinarily for the building time I'd knock off a star in my review, but I feel they compensated for that by putting so much into a bench that costs so little...so I feel they took this into account and it made it worth it for me. ... show more

  • Great Bench, Great Value...Not sure why so many bad reviews?
After reading some of the reviews here on Amazon for this bench, I was somewhat hesitant to complete my checkout. I had read about a terrible smell from the pads on the bench, a mildew smell coming from the box, missing parts, holes improperly drilled...yet I took a leap of faith and ordered it anyways. I'm glad that I did. My bench arrived yesterday in a clearly marked, non-damaged Cap Fitness bench. Today when I went to assemble it, I was pleasantly surprised when there was no mildew smell or gas odor coming from inside of the box. I took the plastic off of all of the metal piece, laid them out in front of me, left the parts card next to me (which is clearly marked, by the way), grabbed a wrench and a pair of pliers and off I went. I'm going to start out by saying that I'm shocked at the number of reviews that I read stating that this bench took 2+ hours and 2 people to assemble. I'm a 5'4" woman who happens to be slightly handy, but it only took me 1 hour flat to assemble the bench, try it out, push it into place in my little home gym, walk out and shut the door behind me. 1 hour flat. While I had no missing parts at all, I do understand where a few people were confused. The assembly manual leaves a lot to be desired if you're less-than-handy. Most people probably did not take the time to actually look at the parts prior to beginning assembly and didn't realize that some of the pieces listed in the assembly manual already come assembled to other pieces. Like the rubber feet and caps, for example. I had ONE misaligned hole on the backrest which was fixed by flipping the entire thing over, using a little bit of force to push the one of the backrest support bars over to align the holes and maintaining that pressure to insert the bolt. I did not need a second person to flip it over, hold any parts, tighten any of the bolts. Just little old me, 1 wrench and 1 pair of pliers. The bench is pretty small, not super heavy, easy to move around, folds up for storage and seems pretty sturdy. Again, I'm only 5'4" so I can't really complain about the backrest being too short for me...but holding my weights and testing this thing out, it felt sturdy, wasn't moving anywhere, and I didn't feel like it was a heap of junk that was going to break within the next 6 months. So unless something magically breaks on this bench, I'm going to say that this was a great $48 spent for a little bench for my home gym. ... show more

  • Bench is Great, Assembly is Frustrating
Okay, I am going to try and help the interested buyer here because there are some things you need to know before purchasing this. First, I am going to assume that you are not a carpenter or a 300 pound man with enough arm strength to lift a boulder. That being said... The Product: Forgetting the installation for a second, the bench itself is great. I am 5'7 and about 190. Other reviewers have mentioned that if you are above 6 feet tall and/or weigh more than 250 pounds that this bench is not for you. After using the bench, I would have to agree. The bench is by no means short, but taller people might have trouble sitting right and/or having good back support when the bench is in the upright postion. Assuming you can install this correctly (I will get to that), the product itself is really sturdy and of a good quality material. It does not feel flimsy or cheap and I have not had to yet readjust the bolts. Assembly: Assembling this product was one of the most complicated things I have ever had to put together. The directions are not difficult to follow, but as other reviewers have noted, the bolts and washers can easily come out of the packaging (as it did for me), that can make things a little complicated, especially if you lose one of the pieces. Now, an important part, you MUST HAVE 2 ADJUSTABLE WRENCHES. A few reviewers said this, but did not explain why, so let me explain it. The bolts which help to secure the pieces together take an enormous amount of strength to screw in correctly. The reason for the two wrenches, is that you will need to hold the end of the screw in place with one of wrenches (essentially not allowing it to move), while you use the other wrench to slowly turn and turn the bolt ever tighter against the screw. You might want to get the help of a stronger person to help you with this. Even with the two wrenches, a decent amount of strength is required to turn the bolts as you tighten it more and more. Set aside at least 2 hours...unless you are a pro and have tools that can add some much needed strength to the process. Overall: Great product, but assembly might be a problem for some. It would be easier with two people. I did this by myself over about 2 hours. In the end, this bench is $50 bucks, so its a great deal for what you are getting, but you're most likely going to be aggravated when trying to put it together. Just make sure you have 2 ADJUSTABLE WRENCHES. This is a MUST. Update 06/20/2011. The bench is still working great. No problems the screws are still nice and firmly attached to the bench. I would still recommend this product. ... show more
