I have used the old model for many years. The old model, which can often be found for half the price, is not a bad carpet shampooer and is better than its competition. However, the old pet pro plus had a lot of design defects. First, the old water chambers often leaked and broke. So often that I kept two spare chambers in the closet. Every time they broke your machine didn't work until you got a new chamber and there was a clean and dirty chamber which would break far too often at a cost of about 35 dollars to replace. This new model is more expensive, but the water chamber defects that caused it to break over and over have been corrected. The water being applied to the carpet is very hot. So hot you can see the steam going on the carpet. It uses lots of water and sucks the water back in. You can clean over a spot the old carpet cleaner cleaned and still get dirt. The new model has brought back life and color to my 8-year-old carpet. This new model is well worth the money. This steam cleaner drops the old mechanical switch, which allows you to choose between a light cleaning which quickly dries, to deep cleaning. Instead, all the controls are in the handle and consist of an off-on switch and a settings switch. It is easy to verify which mode you are in because the floor tool lights up the icon for light and deep cleaning, depending on which mode you want. It was easy to miss which setting you were using on the old model with the switch on the side. The new model is well worth the added cost. The photo is of my carpet hall runner. I made a couple of passes over this spot, maybe 2 or 3 and this was the result. I couldn't believe it and was amazed at how well it cleaned! It even seemed to revive the carpet pile a bit! The steam function will not work until the machine heated up, so if you move through the settings and nothing seems to happen on just steam, wait untill the machine has been running for a few min. The steam only setting did help lift spot stains and make them come up easier on the steam and clean setting. This machine brought up a stain that I couldn't get out scrubbing by hand. A few passes with the steam only function, then a pass or two with steam and cleaner and it's all most completely gone. It is very easy to clean which is another bonus! So when I put it away, everything is clean and ready for the next use. The dirty water tank holds a lot of water! So I only had to empty that twice during the carpets I cleaned. The clean water tank could be a bit bigger. It all comes together easily and is easy to use. It is truly my new favorite cleaning tool! ... show more

I've had a couple of Bissells over 30 years or so. This is a *much* improved machine. The steam cleaning function really does work - it got some weeks old Georgia clay out of a beige carpet (obviously with the right detergent). It's got much better suction than others I've used. The upholstery tools are actually useful, and not flimsy. And after cleaning up a truly ick mistake from an old incontinent dog, I sincerely appreciate how easily this thing comes apart so you can clean it out. You had too remove screws and futz around with the plastic shield over the rollers on the old Bissell and it gradually got more gunked up, which, gross. This shield on this one has two catch releases, comes right off, and snaps back securely. The upholstery tools are also easy to clean. Only quibbles: It's lighter and far less of a pain to maneuver than the older Bissells but it's still heavy enough to require some wrestling around. Not sure how they could solve that honestly, unless they make carbon fiber cleaners. And you have to take the entire lid off the retention tank (whatever you call the one where the dirt goes) and set it aside in order to dump the tank. It's a little unwieldy. But with the lid off the tank it's easier to clean. For regular carpet cleaning I dump the tanks, rinse them and put everything away. For bag messes I just lift the whole machine into the tub, dump the "out" tank in the toilet, and pop the plastic shield off the rollers. I split whatever cleaning solution is left between the tank and the rollers then rinse everything out. I let it sit in the tub to dry then clean up the tub. That might feel like a lot to do, but there are some messes I really don't want to clean up by hand. ... show more

Ok so why not 5 stars? Well firstly the hose attachment isn't worth a damn/did not clean anything. Second is that the tanks could be a lot bigger, I can't even get 1/3rd of a bedroom done before the solution tank is empty, or the dirty water tank is full. Third, the directions say that when preheating for steam, the steam icon will stop flashing when it's done warming....IT NEVER STOPS FLASHING.. Lastly it does not like to do the edges of the carpet, for which I'm thinking of buying the handheld version of this same machine. ANYWAY-This machine cleans absolutely great! I had some real problem areas that laughed at my old Bissell. One was a traffic pattern/mystery stain that my old machine would just kind of move around, but not get out of the carpet. The other areas were stains from furniture, like maybe I put my hassock down before the carpet was completely dry a few years ago, and some of the furniture stain from the wooden legs transferred to the rug..I thought THAT stain was there to stay, but this new machine got it out in just a couple of passes!. I don't know if it's because this machine has two brushes, instead of one, or because of the steam, or maybe it has better suction, but this machine works awesome, my carpets look brand new! ... show more
