When you first plug the air pump in it will make a noise, but not once you connect the airline. I was so disappointed there for a moment, but they really are silent. I run 4 tanks in my bedroom with 2 of these air pumps. I literally can't hear a thing, except the sound of the bubbles at the surface of the water. If you want a lot of flow you can probably only power 1 tank, especially a 50 gallon or above, but if you were trying to power a bunch of betta tanks with a low flow I'm thinking you could power 5 tanks with one pump. ... show more

Great way to provide oxygenation without a big noisy mess pump. So very quiet. as long as you keep it above the aquariums top water level you don't even need the check valve but it is nice to have it.

These things bang. They put out enough gas for a 4-6 inch sponge filter, no problem. They are virtually silent- maybe 5 to 10x quieter than a Tetra Whisper. You can even hang them from a nail by a little silicone ring so there's no vibration hitting solid surfaces. HOWEVER They also fail at a pretty high rate. Buy the two pack so you have a backup. I ordered a second of these because the first one I received is by far the quietest air pump I’ve ever owned, unfortunately the second one is about 10 times louder. It seems like you have to really get lucky and get one of the good ones for that quit pump.

    • Cheap and effective but with a caveat

I was running 2 of these on 2 tanks. Both running smaller sponge filters. The only difference is one had a adjustment valve and one did not. The one with the adjustment valve died within maybe 3 months. I didn't think anything of it at the time so I put the same valve on the second one and within 2 months the pump failed. If you run these I would highly suggest you do NOT run any kind of restriction valves on these I don't think the motors are able to handle the resistance... other than that, it's been flawless and you can't even hear it, you hear the bubbles of the sponge filter over this. ... show more

    • Bought my 2nd one, much more noisier than the first one.

I've bought two of these now, the first one went dead in about 5-6 months. No big deal, it was fairly inexpensive, very quiet and did its job. I decided to get another one. This time around with the 2nd one, it makes a strange high pitch buzzing noise which I never noticed from the first one. I'd imagine in about a week or so, it'll drive me mad. The media could not be loaded. I love this airpump, you can’t hear the pump itself, only the bubbling of the water, and thats very low. Will definitely recommend this pump!
