Since Level 2 charging saves at least 10% in electric costs, and provides the option for quicker charges, while being the "best" for battery life... after careful review I decided to go with this unit. Since my 200Amp Electric panel was only a few feet away from my 2014 BMW i3, this was a quick, easy and inexpensive install for me. Everything, including 40 Amp Breaker Sq D QO at $14.79 (amazon used), This charger, 8 AWG Wire (3 ft of each, White, Red, Black, Green) for $5.72 at local electrical supply (Home Depot, Lowes, doesn't sell by ft.), and a 14-50 plug at Menards for $13.24... the total cost of the set-up including this wonderful Level 2 charger was $256.34. Electrical installation, mounting brackets with drywall anchors and screws, made for an easy physical install of the equipment. One could easily spend nearly 10X the cost for a "professional installation", which isn't really necessary. If you are not comfortable inside your electrical panel, then hire an electrician to install the "range plug" only in your garage. It is simple to plug this unit in, just like an electric range or dryer. My BMW works fine with it, and charge time was reduced by at least 75%! Too early to tell, as I've been using the 110v Level 1 charger which came with the car we purchased used 2 weeks ago. Our car only had 25k miles, and the battery charges to 100% and 90 miles on a 22Kwh (not range extended) model. So far I've only seen it charge at 15.3 Amps on 244.2 volts, so not sure if/when it will go to the full 32 Amps as advertised. Since my EV is old tech, 2014, and only 22Kwh, that may be all I get. I'm perfectly fine with this, as I get quicker more efficient charging, and it is better for battery life. I would have given 5 stars all the way on installing this charger, except the Wi-Fi wasn't clearly state in "Step 2" to put the unit into Wi-Fi "reset" mode by holding down the two buttons on the charger unit which are furthest from the display screen. Once done, you will see "wi-fi reset" and the power light will start blinking slowly. Now the unit is sending out a wi-fi signal, and the "Smart Life" app can see it as a network. Stay logged on your actual network, then proceed to "add device", it will ask for your home network password, and then eventually link the device to the network. It took a couple attempts, then I realized I needed to back out one step, for the app to complete the install. Now that the app is linked, the added features and capabilities are a pure bonus to everything this charger has to offer. ... show more

    • Best Charger for Rav4 Prime XSE, scheduled charging finally working

I wanted to post some potentially helpful information on finding a fully functional Level 2 Charger that works with the Rav4 Prime CHARGING SCHEDULE. First off, scheduled charging I felt was important as the batteries can be scheduled to be charge immediately before a scheduled departure which is conducive to a longer battery life than plugging in the night before and letting the battery set at 100% overnight. The Level 1 charger that came with the vehicle properly worked. The Level 2 charger I bought from Ebay for $160 would only work in CHARGE NOW mode despite everything I tried. Toyota Customer Service was absolutely no help. They had no idea of what might be causing the issue and could give no recommendations on a FULLY COMPATIBLE LEVEL 2 charger. I was also unable to find any helpful post online. I decided to try one or two of the most highly rated chargers from Amazon and found one that is working and FULLY FUNCTIONAL from Aimiler for $209. It also has a great little app and is WiFi compatible. Tip - it must be set to PLUG and PLAY mode and the charging current to 32A. Overall, I would highly recommend this charger. This charger has worked really well for my plug-in hybrid for the last two months. Installation was easy (like plugging in a dryer) once the 240v plug was installed in my garage. I have only used this as a level-2 charger at 32amps. This takes about 3-1/2 to 4 hours to charge fully. The app allows me to control when my car charges so I can take advantage of lower electric rates in the evening/overnight. The 25 fT cable was just long enough to stretch from the garage to my parking spot. My car came with a 120v, level-1 charger, so I use that when I travel or charge away from home. I have not used the Aimiler for this purpose as of the time of this review. Also, I haven’t varied the amps for charging to increase energy efficiency, so I can’t comment on energy savings from that feature of the app. If you buy, make sure your electrician/installer knows the correct power supply specs when buying the electrical equipment for the best results. (No worries about this if you already have a 240v plug near your car.) ... show more
