  • A well made product but with one big limitation
Size: 8GB Color: Blue/Black
I enjoy Adata products, they are inexpensive and work well. A nice attribute for an inexpensive Chinese made product is that I have nave had an Adata product fail on me, which sets it apart in my book. I use their products for non-mission critical use so I thick they are idea for home use and non-critical corporate use. This flash drive is no different. I like the caplets design, since caps always fall off eventually. This one is nice because the button that slides the USB connector locks in both the retracted and extended position, and the contrasting button color makes it easy to see and remember that its a slider. There is really only one characteristic I want to illuminate to you before you consider purchasing this product and that is its speed. This is advertised as a USB 3.0 product and by using System Profiler on my Mac, I verified that this device is reporting that its connected at USB3 at 5Gbps, which is exactly what we expect. What I did not expect is the 7.4 Mbps Write speed I measured using Back Magic Speed Test. The Read speed is quite good at 38.8 and I'm perfectly happy with that especially considering how inexpensive this unit was at the time I purchased it. 7.4 Mbps Write speed is so slow (relatively speaking) that a regular USB 2.0 flash drive could out run it. This is not such a big deal if you match your needs to the device. In my case I wanted to make an emergency restore flash drive for OS X Mavericks that was just released. Yes, I know its a free download but just in case someone does something to their machine that inexplicably renders it unable to connect to any network, I wanted to be able to restore the OS in just a few minutes. Thats where this Adata USB 3.0 flash drive comes in. Any flash drive will do, and until recently we only used USB 2.0 flash drives, most of which are pitifully slow, so we slowly restored or upgraded our OS's with the turtle-like flash drives and just waited. I was hoping for more from this Adata flash drive, with its USB 3.0 capability and I did get more that the truly pitiful USB 2.0 flash drives that litter my drawer, some of which can barely Read and Write at 1 Mbps. Since I only need to write to this flash drive once, to install OS X Mavericks on it, then in the future it will only be used to Read from for each installation, the slow Write speed did not bother me, it didn't take very long to install the 5GB operating system on it, and the great part is that it Reads so fast that it does a reasonable job installing Mavericks onto other machines. If this pattern suits you then you will probably like this drive. Its built robustly, has to cap to lose, the USB 3.0 connector retracts and locks in place like an Exacto knife and its faster than any other flash drive at this amazingly low price point. ... show more

  • Good speeds, not ideal for OTG use.
I have a few flash drives to bring movies and music from home to watch on my Nexus 7 2013 and to share with friends devices. Transfer speeds on a USB3 port on my Windows 7 computer are noticably faster than USB2 drives I have. When I use it with my N7 2013, I need to use a Y OTG cable and have it powered in order for it to be recognized by the tablet. Every other flash drive I have (USB 2 or 2, from 8 to 128 GB) will be recognized without me having to have the cable powered. (An OTG cable has a male microUSB plug for the phone/tablet, and a full-sized female USB port for keyboard, mouse, game controller, flashdrive, etc. A 'Y' cable has male and female microUSB connections to allow you to also plug in a microUSB charging cable to power the tablet or phone.) One odd thing is, I have a cheap battery backup / WiFi router that has a normal USB port to let me wirelessly share files off of a USB storage device. And the only flashdrive I have that can be read by it is this AData 64gb unit. Build quality is OK. I had a small ring in the lanyard loop and the material cracked, allwing the ring to pop off. The action of the slider is secure enough, but the device is light and it feels a little hollow, like the plastic is not the strongest of materials. It has held up for 9 months so far of twice a week use. (This is for the 64GB USB3 Yellow & Black model) Update August 2016: The drive still works as described above. I have it, along with a few other flashdrives, in a small zippered case stashed in my gear bag, As long as it works in the first few days for your weird applications (like an OTG cable, ot a mini router with USB input for media streaming) I would recommend it. ... show more

  • Excellent drive - watch out for mouse or device interference
This is an excellent drive and great value for the money. I'm having a substantially increased file speed transfer experience when using it with my Dell XPS 14Z on my usb 3.0 port. A couple of notes on potential problems you may experience that are not truly related to the quality of the drive itself - 1) USB 3.0 devices are known to put put a good deal of "noise" and can interfere with the operation of wireless mice, keyboards, or other devices that you may already be using, particularly those working in the 2.4 ghz range. I had such a problem with a wireless mouse that was plugged in directly next to my usb 3.0 port. The problem only occurred when my ADATA drive was plugged in and rendered my mouse almost useless. I was able to remedy the problem completely by using a usb hub to plug in my mouse dongle, which gets the dongle a few inches away from the interference and allows the mouse to work perfectly. A short usb extension cable would accomplish the same thing. And if you have a usb port located away from your 3.0 port, try using that port before you do anything else. Getting a few inches of distance between the 3.0 device and your wireless dongle is the key. (A better shielded drive might have eliminated this problem but then again, it might not have.) 2) Files over 4gb won't transfer to the ADATA unless you change the file formatting. Like most devices of this sort, the ADATA drive comes pre-formatted with the FAT32 setup that limits the file size to 4gb and under. But it is easy to re-format the drive as soon as you take it out of the package to NTFS formatting, which allows for larger file transfers (Google it, it's easy). Of course, 4gb is a really, really huge file, so most people will never have this concern but it is easily remedied if you encounter this problem. ... show more
